got a call from agent 3 weeks ago-said they were going to cancel my homeowners insurance because they said i didnt use all the money from my last claim to fix up the house from the last hurricane that hit here. Filed a claim around $4500.

I called him back when i got home and pulled out the invoices we got from the person who fixed up the house. Told him we fixed the roof, the whole entire roof on storage shed, the wooden fence, and the whole patio had to be fixed. He said ok let me see what i can do. This was 3 weeks ago.

Well guess what came in the mail awhile ago? Yep you got it, they not renewing my homeowners policy. wtf??

Do i call and cuss them out or handle it professionally? Been with them 12 years and also have the wifes car insurance with these people.

Ive had 2 claims in 2 years both for hurricanes. My buddy said he thinks it might be because my house is not on a slab.

Been with them 12 years and have never had a late payment. Pisses me off that they can choose who to renew and who to write policies for.

i haven't been an ins. agent for about 15 years...so i may be a little rusty....but i'll try to answer your questions....

did the agent say when your poilicy will be cancelled ?

an ins. company must give you a written notice of their intent to cancel...

what i would do is i would call the ins. company's policy holder service & without mentioning what your agent told you,i would ask them the status of the poilicy....if they say it's still active, i would send in the minimu required & wait to see what happens..

I have insurance till April 11th. Im paid up till then. The letter stated they would not renew my policy after that date.

My agent called me 3 weeks ago saying they are trying to cancel your policy. I told them what the money went to and he said ok let me see what i can do. I figured since i havent heard from him then he must of got it straightened out. But then i get the letter today.

Maybe he doesnt know about the cancellation because this letter was originated from there home office. So i will call the main office and find out why they cancelled the policy and then i will call him. Maybe he will go to bat for me i dont know.

the ins. companies care...they consider that stealing if you don't use the money for the claim...

why?? What says you have to get the damage fixed? How about if u get it done cheaper? Do u have to return the unused portion?

I had some hail damage in '98 on my car. The car was 10 years old at the time, and I had 2 dents in the trunk lid. I didn't get it fixed. I still have the car with dents. That same hail storm knocked a hole in some of my aluminum siding (could hardly see it). I didn't get that fixed either. I did get some other things fixed in the house that were damaged (namely, the roof and carpet where I had a bad lead), and I also fixed a few things, painted, etc.. I just don't consider this dishonest unless I were to try to claim it again (same damage) on a future date.

Allen I'm going to take a guess if you ask around your area--you probably were not the only one to get this notice--Lots of insurers are exiting areas prone to flooding/hurricanes.
One factor that has hurt some prime real estate in coastal cities is inability to obtain coverage at any price.

Ok got to the bottom of this crap.

They said they gave me enough money to repair my whole roof. I only repaired patches of the roof. They reinspected the house and saw i didnt repair the whole roof. Thats why they wanted to cancel my insurance.

Talked to my agent today and told him if they wanted me to repair the whole roof they should of given me more money because the money they gave me wasnt enough. He said you should of called me they would of given me a supplement. I said fuk i didnt know that. I said can they give me some money to fix it now he said i tried but they wouldnt budge. This was 3 years ago. He said if i fix the roof they wont cancel the policy. So im going to get some bids on a cheap roof to put up there. Im only here 2 more years so im not sinking a lot into the house.

I would rather fix the roof than go get a new poilicy. A new policy might be more than fixing the roof you know how insurance is down here with all the hurricanes and shit.

Tigerfan,

I appreciate the offer but im going to fix the roof and keep the old policy. The agent did all he could for me but he said its a shitty situation all the way around. Basically the insurance company thought i was fuking them when i didnt fix the whole roof but the agent knew i wasnt doing that. He tried to get me more money to fix the whole roof but they wouldnt go for it.

Uh, are you kidding me. What says you have to get it fixed? Your POLICY, that's what. Believe it or not that's a legal and binding document my Kentucky friend. YOU broke the law not fixing your car. The point of insurance is to indemnify, not put $$$ in your pocket. As usual 6-5 you know nothing....
