Finally bit the bullet and joined a health club. Been out of the "game " for too long. Here's the deal. My perfect weight is 180. I currently weigh 240 lbs. :scared Used to be in great shape during high school and college (ran track and worked out with free weights). I feel and look like shit. I still have the muscle I gained back in the day, but it's burried under a bunch of fat! I'm looking to get on a routine to lose weight and tone/bulid up the muscles I already have. I have no clue where to start. I plan on going to the gym Mon thru Fri from 6:30 to 7:30 am . I assume I should do cardio some days and lift the other days...Can somebody suggest a workout plan?

Thanks in advance boys.

what gym did you join?
They should have offered you a free session where they show you around, show you how the equipment works and offer some basic workouts geared to what you want to accomplish.
If you didn't take advantage of that, I'd suggest starting there. A very basic workout should be all you need for 3-6 months until you drop some weight and gain some cardio and muscle mass.
If you are interested, I could meet you at your gym some morning to go over a few things.

Joined at the Y in Moline. Just got my id pass tonight and the guy said I could get 1 free session with their personal trainer. Not sure how that will pan out. Think i'll take your advice and stick to cardio until I get my feet back under me.

Mully get my email from jack....Have been a certified personal trainer for over 20 yrs as well as a certified sports nutritionist. I have been bodybuilding for many years but retired from it in 02 I can help you with wt loss and decrease your body fat and a nutritional plan that you can follow for a lifetime. I hate the word diet because diets only last a short time but people need something they can follow for a lifetime. People think they know how to train but they have no idea when it comes down to how many sets, reps and number of times a week to workout as well as what to eat and how many times to eat a day. Just let me know.

Worked out at the Y when I lived in Davenport; now that I'm in Dewitt I'm at the community fitness center. They don't have all the equipment that the West High Y had, but there is enough to get by.
The personal trainers at the West High Y are very good; as a Y member you can visit any Y in the country--my buddy Mark is the fitness director at the North Y--right down 53rd street from your job--you should look him up for some help.
Its nice that you can get some info from some guys here, but nothing beats an in-person consultation and some training tips from someone you can follow up with.
Good luck!

What took you to Dewitt? And by the way, got my twin spires club card. Very smooth how you can wager online as well as the Quad City Downs.

Our son was born in March 2009, my wife's job at the chemical plant near Clinton, a need for a bigger house and a desire to NOT live in Clinton landed us here in DeWitt.
I'm self-employed and travel Eastern Iowa/Western Illinois so living here is no big deal for me and my work.
Kids will (barring job changes) get to grow up in a small town and Davenport is only 25 minutes away--almost an hour now to the Downs..... but I swing by sometimes when coming home via I-74 from Peoria. The card is very user friendly as you say--both at the track and from home.
Continued to work out at the Y in Davenport for a few months after moving up here, but it added too much time to my days. Miss the guys I used to work out with-- I try and join them once in a while-- but to do that means leaving home at 5:30 AM....:scared
