My laptop crashed this past weekend and my desktop is old as hell. I am looking into getting a new desktop and laptop from Dell. Their product seems to be pretty reputable. I had one at my old job and liked it alot, but then again I know crap about computers. Either have to use the slow and worn out desktop or go the the community business center at my apartments, and that's just not gonna work once football gets here.

Any suggestions?

thanks,

I heard alot of great thing's about Dell, and I bought a laptop from them 6 month's ago,it had to be sent back because of some serious crashing flaw's. They did send me another one and it's been ok. It does go down quite a bit, though. It's the Inspiron 2650, and when I bought it I maxed it out with everything they would put in one. I for one have had customer service hell, dealing with them. I can tell you I will never buy another one. Just my experience, I've talked to alot of people whose experience was the same as mine, and other's who love their Dell. It seem's to me the one's who love their machine have not experienced any problem's. I feel sorry for them if they do. The next one I buy will be from a store that I can walk into and get a real person, not phone mail hell if there is a problem. I recommend calling their service dept.,as a customer who has a problem and see if you can find anyone who speak's English. If you call the order line they will take real good care of taking your money;)

Dell is a great computer, especially for laptops, one of the top brands to buy, you will be set, make sure you banter back and forth with the guy to get some good deals, a lower price or a free printer, let me know how it works out!

Dell is the way to go. Have one at home and work. That's all we order at work and they are very reliable. Laptops and Desktops.

Go the the web site www.gotapex.com

Every day they have updates about a new computer special - ie. different discounts on Dell computers - You have to buy the computer from the dell web site but gotapex will tell you how to save money doing it.

Hope this helps

I wouldn't consider anything but Dell. Sorry to hear about your problems jbird, I really think you are in the minority. Dell has won customer service awards every year for the past several years. They are reputable.

Pick out what you want from the website, but when it comes time to buy, give them a call. Like DJ said, you can sqeeze better deals out of them on the phone. And another thing, if you go through the "Consumer" section they will try to cram a lot of extra stuff on you, like MS Office, dial up contracts, etc. But, if you go through the "Business" section you can avoid that. Our new Dell server just arrived about 30 minutes ago. Can't wait to get it going. Good luck,

Dell has a large complex here in Nashville that gets all the customer service calls.

Dell is a great product. I purchased a Gateway 3-4 years ago and it has served me well. Next time I'm getting a Dell.

Thanks for all of the input guys. The wife is really starting to bak at the thought of buying 2 new copmuters. hell, she thinks that i can get by on our old one that she uses jus to keep a budget on...lol. I know that this would sound to most people, but with the upcoming football season, I want (notice I didn't say need...lol) a computer that is fast and reliable. I also need a computer that can keep up with the usage. I am trying to write a book, and spend a good amount of time researching things on the internet, and this old computer jst won't hack it. Really think that Dell is the way to go, but I will keep everything that Jbird said in mind. I f it's happened to him, it's happened to others, but that could prob be said with most computer companies as well.......*Cough**gateway**Cough Cough**. thinking about goiing cheaper on the desktop and spending a little more on the laptop.

Dell is the only way to go on customer service alone. They are the industry leader in this regard.

They might still be the leader in customer service due to the lack of other manufacturer's shitty customer service, but they do not offer anywhere near the service they did 4+ years ago..basically living off their pas glory. Currently, it's not very good and the laptop I purchased 3 years ago just had it's motherboard, hard drive and optical drive shutdown. The cost of which repairing would be the same as getting a new computer. If you are going to get one, at least get the max warranty, which I believe is 4 years so you don't get stuck with a lemon after a few years.

Just about ALL computer companies are living off of past glory. IBM, Gateway, Compaq(HP). The PC business is EXTREMELY competitive. Not sure if Dell can be thrown into the "past glory" category quite yet, though. They have remained king (IMO) far longer than the others I listed. Still a great company. I would recommend a good warranty, as hoops suggested. Never know what could happen.

i dont agree... they dont have a local store.
if your computer busts you have to have it shipped off. If not that you have to spend hours on the phone with technical support so you dont have to ship it off.

check out gateway. Gateway and Dell use the same parts. gateway and dell are usually #1 and #2 in consumer reports. However. if you dont know much about computers its nice to have a gateway. b/c instead of shipping it off, you have a local store with a service center. i took my computer in a few months ago. and i had it back in 3 days.

August 2002 I bought a Dell for the upcoming football season. Had an old computer and was ready for the real thing. Got the Dimension 8200, with pretty much everything. I have never had a problem and I woudn't second guess the purchase. One of the best buys I've made.

I know you are worried about jbird's story, but there is definitely a lopsided consensus for Dell in this thread.
