Have been planting a pretty big one for about 20 years. If anybody has any questions, I would be glad to try and help.

thanks!! On the guords, I've been successful growing them, but they all seem to rot?? The pumpkin problem is that I get about all vines and no pumpkins, or the little pumpkins break off prematurely.

raising a garden is FAR from a non-manly thing to do. nothing wrong with raising a garden.

65-On the pumpkins, dig a decent sized hole and fill it with compost mixed with aged manure (horse barns are a good source). Cover with 3 inches of soil. Plant 3-4 seeds per hole. After they have established themselves save only the best plant. After the plant blossoms and sets three small pumpkins pick off all the other blossoms, also pick off the fuzzy ends on the vines. This will force the plant to focus all of its energy into those three pumpkins. When the three little pumpkins are softball sized, save the best shaped one and pick the other two. Now all of the plants energy will go into that one. For them to have good shape you will need to roll them from side to side now and then to keep them from flattening out on one side. Litely fertilize 3-4 times during the year, and give them plenty of water. (Big Max is a good variety)

As for the gourds try growing them on a trelles. Cattle panels or concrete wire works good.

Are they getting plenty of water? Maybe the sun is too hot. Any small bugs? I grow mine in whisky barrels, and never have had any problems. When you water, let them get fairly dry and then drown them. Make sure your soil is completely saturated.

Have been gardening for quite a few years myself. Just got ours in this past weekend as we were in Europe earlier in the month and didn't want to be gone for 2 weeks after planting.

Backed off a bit this year as we planted mostly tomatoes and peppers. You are welcome to stop by for a few tomatoes when they ripen, Mama...:D

A few brussle sprouts for something new this season, as well as potatoes and beets(my favorite) and some cucumbers and beans.

Prior couple of years I tried my hand at some cantelope; not too successful last year as we had a nasty drought here, but the two years before that I had a nice yield. Tried pumpkins a couple of times and didn't have any success with them. Grew some nice summer squash and other gourds in the past, but have gotten away from them for some reason these last few seasons...

What limited knowledge I have about gardening....

Any broad leaf type plants like watermelon or cantaloup can really be wiped out by a hail storm. Had tried once to grow some in a back area next to the garage. They grew quite well and took off leaving that area itself and growing where ever they could extend their tentacles. Then the hail storm it and the plants were done. Torn to shreds. The other thing I know for a fact is to never by insurance from anyone in Indiana :nono: Most likely a person that gambles too much and is stalking some dude that bleeds in California.
