i hope you watched the game bc I did, and was seriously pissed off after it. Zona gets men on 1st and 2nd with NOOOO outs(down 2-1) and dont bunt. Am i just stupid or is that the way you are suppose to play the game. ahhhhhhhh, i am so furious right now.

This arizona game is typical of baseball season for me. I agree down 2-1 in the 8th you have to play for the tie first and then try to win second. Dumb managing........

now that I'm cooled down, I wonder how Arizona is in 1st place? stupid managing mistakes like that is why teams fail to succeed later down the road. I will be sure to keep this is mind when I play Zona next.

Saw the same thing the other day with Florida playing Tampa Bay. They had men on first and second with no outs and didn't bunt the runner over to third.
In the same inning, after there were two outs, Perez decides to put in a pinch runner on second. I'm still scratching my head on that.
Florida loses 5-4.

There are not many good bunters left in baseball - it is a lost art. Not just in a sacrafice situation either.

I don't recall anyone this year even attempting a bunt for a base hit to lead off a game or an inning. Lou Brock, for example, would do this numerous times during the season...

who was up? would you have been mad that he bunted if he bunted into a double play? THAT'S what really pisses me off.

i really shouldn't have commented because i didn't see the play but i go by the earl weaver playbook. f**k the bunt. go for the 3 run HR

....unless it's the pitcher that's up or a speedy guy that knows how to bunt.

The Batter in the Marlins game was Charles Johnson and Madjack is correct there was a good chance he bunts into a double play. Besides Floyd, Johnson has the most power on the team and you can't take the bat out of hands.

I proably shouldn't comment either but I like the per centages.
Man on second and no outs:
If you hit here are your possibilities. A long ball to deep center or right, the runner advances. A hit, the runner might score. A home run. A walk and you've got two men on.
If you bunt, usually the best that will happen is one out and the runner advances. It usually still takes a hit to get him in. If the batter misses the ball, the runner gets caught off base for the out and you've given up your advantage. Unless it's a pitcher with an under 200 batting ave. or a super speedster that bunts for hits, I'm with Jack. Go for it.

What will really make you sick is what happened to me the other night. Extra innings and I've got the home team. My lead-off man doubles with a decent hitter following him. The hitter misses a bunt attempt and the runner is out at third. On the next pitch the hitter gets a double but I go on to lose on a home run that should never have been. I most cases, I would rather see the per centage plays.

There was a similiar incident with Cleveland earlier in the season. They had Russell Branyon try to bunt a runner over and of course the big power hitter failed. I thought it was......make that I KNOW it was the most stupid decision by their manager I ever seen.

BUT....one good thing came of it. Branyon must had been pretty embarrassed about not getting the bunt down and must had been working on it big time, because a few weeks later he was dropping down bunts totally unexpectedly and beating them for base hits.

Anyways, don't let it get to ya. The next time you might have the other team bet. Of course no one remembers those times.

it was 1st and 2nd with NO outs and Grace at the plate. Not to mention it was the 8th inning, also the D-backs only had like 5 hits in the game and 7 total the last 2 games. I know there is many possiblities in letting him swing, but you have to play for the tie before you get the win. its just common fundamental baseball. anyone who doesn't know how to bunt shouldn't play baseball, bc I think that is one of the keys to a TEAMS success. base hit, move them over, get them in. its simple. baseball is moving away from the way its suppose to be played. besides, whens the last time Grace hit one out?

It is called fundamental baseball and there was a great discussion during the LA/SF game the other night about managers not demanding their teams play solid fundamental baseball. They were saying that's the way LA was winning games. I still think that unless you know the guy can lay down the bunt, the per centages favor hitting away.

I have a good friend who is a retired college baseball coach. Knows more about baseball than anyone I personally know. Has a former player who has managed several big league teams now. Have heard this guy mention my friend in interviews as to his knowledge.
Anyway, he really goes off when he sees the way the game is played today. Nobody moves guys up, sacrifices, etc. This coach would play for a run in the first innings. He always said that it is worth the same regardless. He had a very successful career.
The game has really changed.

I agree John.
If a player can earn several million dollars per year he can learn how to move a runner with a bunt if the situation requires it. These are PROFESSIONAL athletes and it doesn't take much to learn.

I like to imagine how they would play if they only got paid for wins. I bet styles would change. Players would become team guys. Just a thought.

It's called TEAM BASEBALL and thats what players do not care about anymore. They want the long ball more than anything. Baseball is a team game. It is individually rotated but everyone has there role. ask barry bonds. does he want the HR title, NO. he wants the diamond looking thing on his finger. Yeah, and they played the PER CENTAGE play and look what it got them, a "L" in the column. something that could hurt them down the road as far as home field is concerned
