How hard is this to do??

I rent a home & they wont install it without written permission from my landlord, which I just really dont feel like dealing with since there will be a 100 questions to why I need Direct Tv. They 80 year old couple will never get it...

Any tips?

pretty easy. once you run wires (rg6 cable), set up dish, you will need a compass. in the past you would put zip code and it will tell you what % on compass you need to point it to. have someone in house reading off signal strength to dial it in. doing it by yourself is pain in the ass. i dont know how long the cables need to be, or how many rooms your doing, but i ended up finding a local electrical supply warehouse and i got 1,000' of rg6 for around $65.

You might actually find someone around your parts (where ever that is) that worked in the business at one time or another. Maybe putting an ad out locally somehow or asking around local establishments. You could throw someone some change and get your situation cleared up.

Thanks.

I am installing it on a 3 story house so yeah that would be a pain to do myself.

I am only putting the DTV in 2 rooms.

i guess i should pay more attention.

why would they have to know he's renting?

i would imagine its against the law to start attaching stuff to the house without their permission. the dish might be considered real property.

I moving-have cable now but thinking of Direct Tv--does Direct TV go out alot in bad weather?

Only when the storm is in the direct path of communication between the satellite & your dish. Hence, you could be in the middle of the worst storm of the year, but still have a signal if it is not in your signal line.

I would think that things could get complicated trying to have dtv installed in a large house DIY.

What I would do is contact another installer in your area who is not such a stickler for "written permission" from landlord. Where I live there are many sub contractors who install for sat. TV. I had it installed in a house I rented and in the apt. I rent now without any problems.

When I moved into my current place about a year ago I told my landlord that I had already paid for the sunday ticket when he balked at me having a dish and he just asked that it not be on the building. So, what I did was just have the installer put the dish on a pole behind some bushes and run the cable into my unit.

Basically, most of these installers just want to get the job done as quickly as possible and will not give you too much shit and make the job as unobtrusive as possible.

Because I live in an apt he could not run the cable through the attic(which is actually the upstairs apt) so he drilled a few holes and ran the cable through a window using some kind of flat cable connector made so that a window can be closed and locked over it. And bada boom it was installed and you would really have to be looking for it to even notice. A lot of times they can connect right into the outside cable box if your house was previously wired for cable tv.

hope this helps and good luck!

also, if your dish fills up with snow if you can reach it and knock out the debris signal is golden.

I only had to do this once but signal cleared right up after I removed snow from dish
