Thinking of getting the wife one for xmas.. Looking for some feedback.

It doesnt have a disc drive.. Can you get excel on it? Basically can you use it for work or is it just a big toy?

Thanks

No app for excel I can't find one

So its a toy.. I already bought one but im thinking of taking it back... Thinking the wife would benefit more from a laptop.

Plus she wants to watch movies when she travels. The guy told me you can buy them online and download them. What the hell would i do with all the blu rays we already own? There is no disc drive

I have a few friends that have all but ditched their laptops due to their use of the iPad.

If you crunch numbers and don't use hosted applications, it's probably not a good fit for you.

For excel, could you use Google Spreadsheets? It's not nearly as robust as Excel, but if you are performing mostly basic functionality it could be a good fit for you.

You should be able to access Google Docs from your iPad.

On the blu-ray: can't you upload them to iTunes then access them via iPad?

Also, aren't digital movies offered online the same quality as blu-ray? If so, is there another reason to continue buying the older technology? Just wondering as I have no idea.

I use my laptop for work and Ipad for life. I have the 64gb 4G as of last month. Portable, fast, easy to use, long battery life.

As for excel, I thought I read that a an office app was available for $9.99. I may be wrong, though. I don't use excel, except for my expense report, so have not yet tried to locate the app yet. Will let you know if I dig up anything good.

Gib - you can get DocumentstoGo for excel - app is 16.99. But if you are doing any kind of true calculations on excel you won't like it. The GoodReader App can be used to see excel spreadsheets but you cant modify them. We have them for work. The whole plant is trying to go paperless. For work it is good for seeing emails and taking notes. We use NoteTakerHD app for taking notes and we no longer have to take around pads or notebooks.

For watching movies, you can get programs to rip DVDs and then upload to itunes and move over to iPad. It works but obviously takes a while. I usually burn a couple of dvds for a plane trip. But with 64 gb you don't really have a lot of room for a lot of movies.

I love using it and I think the apps are good but depending on what you want to use it for you may be better off with a macbook. Let me know if I canhelp you any further. With all you do for me in NFL I am willing to help any way I can.
