Clear skies forecast for ECU-West Virginia

September 6, 2008 3:10 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The sun began poking through the clouds above Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium as West Virginia began warm-ups before today's game against East Carolina.

Tropical Storm Hanna didn't bring much damage to the Greenville area when the storm blew through the North Carolina coast early this morning. In fact, the tow trucks yanking cars out of parking lots surrounding the stadium probably out-number downed tree limbs.

There are still occassional strong gusts of wind, but the rain all but stopped by 2:30 p.m. ET. The forecast calls for scattered showers over the next few hours, but a clear sky is predicted by 7 p.m. The improved weather is good news for the Mountaineers, who would like to open the passing game a little bit more against East Carolina. Senior Pat White completed 25 of 33 passes for 208 yards with a career-high five touchdowns in last week's 48-21 victory over FCS opponent Villanova.

Also of note: West Virginia officials tell me senior middle linebacker Reed Williams will be a game-time decision. The team's leading tackler in 2007, Williams has been bothered by shoulder injuries since the spring. Coach Bill Stewart has left the decision up to Williams, who was defensive MVP in last year's 48-28 victory over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.

If Williams doesn't play today, the Mountaineers will probably make a decision on whether to redshirt him after next week's game at Colorado. Sophomore Pat Lazear started against Villanova in Williams' absence and had seven tackles.
