Anyone have one of those navigation systems for your car?

I know there are a bunch of different ones, but know nothing about them. Looks like I will be doing a bit of traveling into parts unknown for work.

Any info would be a great help.

What do you need to know ?

Which kind is best, do you have to subscribe to a service, how detailed are the maps that are in them, pretty much don't know too much at all.

Just seems like a very useful tool for what I am gonna have to do.

If it works like I think (hope) they do it seems like it would be a good thing to have when out of town on vacation as well.

PF.... as American Express says..... "DON'T leave home without it!!!!!" Can't give you any comparisons, but we have the Magellan RoadMate 800, and the Magellan RpadMate 3000T, and absolutely love them both. Last week i had over 30 addresses plugged into it that it got me to flawlessly. (it did seem to have a slight flaw getting me out of the DEN airport area when i hit the HOME button tho.....) jumped down in *miles to go* drastically after about 2 miles after acquiring signal, and signaled one turn when it was too late to make it, but other than that.....zero problems, (and as soon as you go past a turn it recalculates route to get you back on course)


It's gonna get it's next test in Chicagoland tomorrow, as there are 4 places we wanna go.

Ours came with my wife's car with 3 years of service. Not sure but I think they said we are going to have to pay $120 a year for the service if we want it after the three that it came with.

It will take you door to door works really well.

I wouldn't buy one myself a map does the same thing for me but the wife would be lost without it.

If you think you need one then go for it they definitely work.

Vinnie, say what you want about finding your way from NYC to LAX, but for finding your way to 4529 W. BFE St. in Podunk, NE, the navigational systems can't be beat! Not sure what type systems have subscriptions, but with the Magellan, you just buy the system and there is no subscription involved.

oh, and for the added +, for those with kids...... never again will you hear "are we there yet??"/ *how much longer??*....etc, etc..... it displays the travel time and mileage left, and and they enjoy watching it on their own....LOL ... i also like the fact it displays your speed and elevation (but those features are just for fun )

WOW Vinnie, that sounds like and AMAZING system! Guess i got took AGAIN, on buying a relatively new electronic device. (DirectTV being my main example, since i paid over $700 for the dish and receiver when they first came out ) I'm still happy that there is no subsciption fee with the Magellan, but within a couple of years, they will probably be under $200 for systems even better! Other the pre-programming addresses of known destinations, another feature i really like is searching the destinations that are already installed. Example: Son injured his toes first night in Denver.... so easy to ask it to find the nearest grocery store for first aid crap.

The greatest invention since sliced bread!! Wife's car came with one and it's great. I have a treo and I'm going to buy TOMTOM Navigator.

It's worth the investment if you get lost easily like I do.:shrug:

I've had the Garmin C330 for a couple of months now and I love it! It's amazing.....very accurate, no subscription, nothing to download (although you can download system updates from their website), and it's very easy to use. Just input the address of where you want to go, and less than 30 seconds later it maps out the route for you. It automatically redirects you if you make a wrong turn, has voice prompts, and other cool stuff. You should be able to find it for about $450.
