Old School...........Fantastic!!!!!!!!Great Post and
CONGRATULATIONS!!! I've seen a lot over the years but.............
I never knew ...I just never knew..how powerful AA is and the millions they BRING BACK....They are true angels and are always there for you...They accomplish what counselors and shrinks try to accomplish IMO.. I've heard it said "Just DO IT' and "Fake it till ya make it" because you WILL. I only wish certain family members had ....The road that follows where you have been OS, is ugly!
UT Longhorn.....Unfortunately, there are those who refuse all help and give up HOPE...God Bless you and take care of yourself because while the alcoholic thinks they hurt noone but themselves the experience is devastating on all loved ones...try intervention???

I'm a bit younger than you guys so qualify that as you may but I wanted to add my take and hear some thoughts on the subject........whom do you consider an "alcoholic" to me it's a vague term, someone who gets bombed every night, or a few times a week, or what? I mean, myself, and many people I know when they go out drinking on weekends cant really stop drinking until last call or they pass out, usually real late since bars close in NY at 4 then usually a little postgame at someones house granted I am half some of your guys age so its easier on my body than yours, but I do not let it interfere with weekday work/school or other things nor make it a nightly habit....but I can see how serious it is from seeing these boards it really is a bitch to try and quit cold turkey, having a drink to me after a long day of work/school/what have you is a simple pleasure just like betting on a football game is, hard to give that up but if you can do it cold turkey more power to you, wish you the best of luck, certainly isn't easy to change all your friends/places you go to/etc

If anyone is interested, here is a link to an online alcohol use evaluation tool: The MAST Questionnaire. It is only one of many questionnaires to help you decide if drinking is a problem for you. The real key is being honest with your answers - be honest with yourself. Hell, chances are, if you're taking the test, you may already be thinking that you have a problem.

Your score suggests an early to mid-stage problem with alcohol, but not necessarily alcoholism.

This assessment, when answered truthfully, is effective in identifying most people in need of alcohol counseling or treatment for alcoholism. It does not provide a diagnosis. Based on your score, we recommend that you should seek further evaluation by your doctor about your use of alcohol

NYSportsfan, you are right you are young...but it sneaks up on you. You start on the weekend then one day it's a night or two during the week. I took the test VAnurse posted remembering back when I drank, brought home some memories, jeez I use to spend half a day or so finding people to apologize to for something I said or did the night before. My mom is a recovering alcoholic, also has Alzheimer's, she went through AA about 20 years ago after being admitted to hospital to dry out, she had tremors and kept thinking there were spooks under her bed, cussed us all out, really went nuts the first few days in the hospital, really scary stuff, hard really to say what makes an alcoholic, but I think it starts when you feel you have got to have a drink. I think my biggest regret was missing a couple of my kids very early years, I mean there are many things I can't remember, and that is sad. I also wish the video camera wasn't so accessible then, because on many videos I made a total ass of myself.

Good Luck

I consider my dad an alcoholic. Drinks atleast a 12 pack a night, passes out in his recliner nightly and cant go a day with atleast a 6pack. Has over 20 cases right now in a fridge in the garage he bought just for beer.

yeah, that is definitely an alcoholic, but not that I'm condoning it, but if he is retired and not working it is not the same as if he has to go to and get up for work every day, but either way, a 12 pack a day is a lot, i drink that and more on the weekends when i go out to release my stress/frustration from the week, but cannot do it every day wouldnt be able to function...it is a shame what alcoholism can do as you attest but many people like the feeling of it so hard to stop once you get started, not to mention it's expensive after a while, but that must be tough on you as the son, best of luck....
