He's telling the traditional story in aramaic, and that one puts the jews in the crosshairs. Putting the blame on the jewish elders somehow they got sanitized out over the last decade or so, jews didnt do it, romans didnt do it. The crucifixtion - the greatest suicide in history??? I say go see the movie and decide for yourself!!!

shamrock, part of the persecution of the Jewish people over time comes from unscrupulous people giving credence to their killing/slaughter because they killed Jesus. In other words, the Jews killed Jesus, so we can kill Jews. That is of course a ridiculous argument, but many Jews were killed and discriminated against for that very reason. I guess some of the Jewish leaders think that this anti-semitism might gain a renewed fervor after people see the movie. I like to give my fellow man a little more credit than that, however, and I don't think this movie is going to spur any Achtung Juden environment.

The Old Testament scriptures prophesized about Jesus, his sinless life, and his death, and whether the Romans or the Jews did the killing matters not. His death was a part of the plan, he even forgave them all while he was on the cross ("Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do").

I'm looking forward to the movie, and I think it might be one of the top grossers of all time.

I had a question on this, too. I always thought that the Romans killed Jesus.

Early Christian teachings completely exonerated the Romans and put the blame on those who picked Barrabas over Jesus. So early Christian teaching blamed the Jews.

It makes sense, if only from a recruiting standpoint. Don't blame the people that you're trying to recruit (pagan Romans) and blame the competition (Judaism).

Roman Catholic teaching hasn't proclaimed this thinking since the first millenium.

Feeling a little bit like Railbird tonight.

From what I've read, this particular film does portray Jews pretty badly. There are so many liberties that can be taken, which pretty much has to be done. I mean, let's be honest- everything in the bible was written by humans almost 2000 years ago. No one today can possibly really know what happened for sure.

But with a lot of Hollywood bigwigs being of the Jewish faith, you can see how it could affect Gibson in the future.

his movie is based on the first 4 books/gospels, he is catching flak for his portrayal of jews in the movie based on these 4 books/gospels, not a devout catholic but I believe they make up the old testament (matthwew, mark, luke and john), he made a very good point in his interview last night, revising the movie as to lessen the role of the jews would be equivalent of changing schindlers list or roots to lessen the impact on germans or whites, it's his movie and whether the acts , scenes etc. are all historically acurate, don't know but it's his movie and how he interprets it, it is what it is and like he said if you don't like it don't buy a ticket. he produced/funded the project himself.....

so i think he takes the criticism as personal attacks in some instances....didn't realize how religious he actually was or to what extent he devoted himself to them, built a church/chapel on his own property and has mass said in latin ala the early sixties....

I went through Catholic confirmation but have taken the time over the years to read a number of other religous texts/interpretations of the bible. Each one seems to put a different version out there, but the underlying similarities in my opinion in dealing with the death of Christ are that the Jewish high council/elders/town council did sanction his killing by the Roman soldiers. But again, its 2000 freaking years ago its like a 2000 year version of the telephone game. And thats if you even believe in the Bible, which a lot of people, including myself, dont. Lots of leaps to be made here. I dont really know how this equates to people hating Jews today because of it, I mean that shit is pretty out there if you ask me.

Gibson has taken this movie on almost as a personal calling, and I commend him for doing it. How many A-list actors would take this much time out of their life doing something so contraversial, just because they loved the subject or felt passionately about it? Personally I will see this movie for the same reason I see all the other ones people call contreversial in that I like to form my own opinion and not be spoonfed by the movie critics or the moral police.

Seems like every 15 years or so someone comes out with a religious based movie......last one off the top of my head would have been "The last temptation of Christ".......????

Big controversy behind these films is that the portrayal, plot, or accusations made by these movies or percieved to be.....are not commonly agreed to by the religious elements of society.....this has already been stated in the above postings in various forms......

I guess I watch movies, and rather than being too judgemental about the implications made by the movie, I just think of it as one interpretation of one movie director's opinion or bias....

Consider the fact that it's just a movie, It doesn't have to tell some accurate account of history.....in this case whatever movie made along these lines will be rejected by any number of religious groups......you can't please them all....

I watched the latest version of the Matrix series movies.....some may have liked it but I felt the movie was way too saturated with computer enacted action scenes.....like guys jumping off of interstate overpasses onto speeding semi's and fighting......or the scenes where 1 guy kicks the crap outta 40 all at once, spins and kicks like 10 guys standing in a circle one after the other....those scenes get a little too slapstick for me....right up there with the guy who jumps up and lands on a three story building.......(my roommate rented the movie, btw...)

Bottom line is......IT'S A MOVIE.......it doesn't have to be historically or politically correct or based on some true story....
Watch whatever movies you like to watch, come to your own conclusions about the content or quality......

Somebody please tell the church people that this is only a movie and that Mel Gibson is an actor......
