No, but looking for a good franchise to open within the next year or so. Any ideas?

Thinking about a Smoothie King or Subway.

I recently had dealing with Subway. If you look at them be careful they will screw you behind your back, happened to me I've got no reason to lie. I would file a lawsuit against them but it would be my word against theirs.

Just thought I would warn you all.

had the old man talked into a "NuWay" franchise.
We have none in Vegas.

If I had the bucks I would love to open a Cracker Barrel here in Vegas but would think twice about opening one in the south :D

I have a good friend (fraternity brother) who is currently opening a Mellow Mushroom (best pizza in the world) in Lexington, KY. He is also looking to open one in Louisville and Cincinatti.

I made the first couple of steps a few years back to open Waffle Houses in western KY. Fell through because they only expand in certain states each year. Waffle House note: If you go to Waffle House and you have ever seen Bert's chili--I met Bert this morning at the Waffle House next to my house. I thought it was quite exciting.

I have a friend who owns 3 (maybe more now--I haven't seen him in over a year) Subways in Kentucky. He has enjoyed the experience and has made a pretty penny over the years. He started them with a loan right out of college. He has put many hours and sweat into them, but it has paid off.

What's "NuWay"?

I would like to open a Moe's or Willy's burrito joint. They are the California style burritos. Other competitors are QDoba and Chipotle (owned by McDonald's).

I'm not sure where I read it, but Subway is one of the hardest money wise and worst companies to open up a franchise with. Pretty much what Tennessee Tout said.

Now that I think about it, I believe I read it in a book called Fast Food Nation. If you guys haven't read that book I urge you to go get a copy. Even if you hate to read (I have a friend who has read 2 books in his life...Rodman's Bio and this book), you'll love it. It tells all about the fast food industry behind the scenes...how they pay schools to get workers who are underage, how they won't pay their workers OT, how they inject their fries w/ beef flavor, where the "meat" comes from, and many other things you wouldn't believe, etc etc. Read this book and you'll consider avoiding fast food the rest of your life.

Dawgball,

Loved Mellow Mushroom in college at Auburn. Would love to open a franchise, and have looked into it, but too much to start and don't want to leave my job to run it. Met a guy in the Baton Rouge location after they just opened and talked to him about it. Do you want to move to Austin and we'll open one together? :p

God i love that pizza. Sooooooo yummy.

Dawgball,

Also no Waffle Houses in Austin either. Can you believe that? What does it cost to start a Waffle House anyway?

Owned and operated an independant BBQ joint in the mid-west. Next to a major manufact. plant. Fast food to be served on a plant worker's 1/2 hr break, alot of plant del, catering jobs @ plant and to locals, It was a slow cooking process, buffet style sreving, down the line, "Meats, Sides and Sauce Drink, Pay CASH at the end of the line. Bus was open 6 days a week 11 AM to 9 PM. Every day bus started @ 6 AM . Had great BBQ, made good $$$,had fun, and didn"t have to pay royalties!!! Headaches are young adult employees (18-21) that are no shows for work when you are counting on them. Plan on hands on the door, unlock it in the morning and lock it at night if you are just starting out in the food and bev business. I managed a sports bar & grill that seated over 200 people before I bought the BBQ place from a good friend of mine, and only have one regret, my partner and my office manager. I spent too much time on the food prep end making sure everything was right there, that the customer was more than satisfied, that the place was clean, sticking to the philosphy that "Good food takes time to prepare, Great Food Takes More Time" My partner, office manager, is now and has been for sometime my ex-wife, we bought the business together, I ran the rest. she ran the books until I started to look for something,.....a paid recpt, she still p*sses me off

If I'm not mistaken.....Cracker Barrel is not a franchise. They are all company owned

tchism is right. CB is not a franchise.... actually it was started right here in lebanon, tennessee by my cousin, danny evins. damn thing started out as a gas station that served cheese and crackers.... danny converted it to a "home cooking" country restaurant and it (along with its revenues) went off the chart. danny and a few investors (some of his close friends) put up $15k each back in 1969 and now he has more $$ than he knows what to do with...at one point he was the highest paid executive in the state of tennessee...bringing in over 300k per month in salary and fringe benefits.... damn, i wish he'd share the wealth. LOL

...and Senor Capper, we're working on building more each year. already in texas and trying to spread further west.... ;)

I know everybody is talking about restaurants, but when I moved to Arizona about 10 years ago, a friend & me looked into a Mail Boxes Etc. The start-up costs were $90,000 & the monthly kickbacks were very high(don't remember the exact figure). We thought that the prices was outrageous & never went further with it. I guess restaurants are a better money venture, but I think these costs that franchises ask for starting expenses are way too high. I remember a few years ago when McDonalds was a hot franchise. but now Mcdonalds is having business problems, I read a few of them closed.
IMO,if I was starting a business I would start my own business on my own.

Mellow Mushroom was a LOT cheaper to start than a Waffle House. When I was checking into WH, they required you to work in one in all capacities for at least a year before you could purchase one. I think that is a great rule. MM only requires 10 days of training and it's down here in Georgia somewhere just outside of Atlanta.

If I remember correctly you had to have $1 million in Assets and $500,000 cash to even be considered as an owner of WH.

On the Mail Boxes, I was talking to a guy who owns a couple of Pak Mails (same thing) here. He said you can't make money by owning one, but if you get to about three stores (or more), then you can really clip away some cash.

If you want an idea for a chain restaurant, just find a big college town that does not have a Mellow Mushroom. I would almost guarantee success if you put the work in. Great Pizza and over 100 draft beers is tough to beat.
