TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) ? Florida State football players and others associated with the athletic department are part of a gambling investigation by state and local police agencies, officials said Wednesday.

University police chief Carey Drayton said authorities are looking into allegations made against football players, student trainers and managers, along with other students on campus, the Tallahassee Democrat reported for Thursday editions.

"I already have people ready to 'fess up to us," Drayton said.

Drayton did not identify which people he meant, other than to say they are not members of the football team.

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said no law enforcement official has talked to him about allegations involving specific players on the No. 16 Seminoles.

"I don't know of any involvement of any athlete," Bowden said. "I would be shocked if any of my players are involved in that. But you never know. You're just nearly scared to say. I haven't heard rumors or talk among our kids that anybody is involved in something like that."

Some gambling allegations were made last month, after quarterback Adrian McPherson was dismissed from the team because of his involvement in the theft of a $3,500 check from a Tallahassee business. McPherson was charged with misdemeanor theft for stealing the blank check.

Florida State athletic director David Hart said last month he questioned McPherson about rumors of gambling or point shaving.

"I asked questions that needed to be asked," Hart said. "There were no accusations, simply questions."

McPherson's lawyer, Grady Irvin of St. Petersburg, has denied that the 19-year-old placed any bets.

Florida State sports information director Rob Wilson said after McPherson's arrest that the police investigation did not involve gambling or point shaving.

Drayton, whose department is working with Tallahassee police and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, said police are working on two investigations, which he said may be related to one another.

One of the investigations, Drayton said, was in connection with an unidentified informant alerting authorities that he was being shaken down over gambling debts. The other investigation is examining the persistent allegations that McPherson was involved in gambling, Drayton said.

No arrests are imminent, Drayton said.

"This is going to be an involved and lengthy process," he said.

Florida State plays No. 4 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1.

It just keeps getting worse for FSU. My book and Pinnacle still dont have the game on the board yet. It seems like a long time for a game to be down when there isnt an injury or speculation involved. Rix is out, Walker is in, put up a line.

It appears that the extracurriculars are making the books gun shy. They probably feel burned by the people that got a low number with Georgia.

first mich st,now this

you know the ncaa will do everything in their power to squash this one early on....certainly does college football absolutely no good for this kind of scandal to see the light of day.....i can see the fla st athletic dept scrambling to quell this stuff...haven`t heard much about the mich st rumors since bobby williams got the gate...my guess is,this will get pushed under the rug in some fashion.....but,anybody that thinks this stuff DOESN`T happen is living in la-la land....with every type of bet imaginable( prop, quarter, half, total ,you name it)all you need is a key kid or 2 or a ref or 2....anytime you have people and easy money, you will have these situations....how pervasive is it?who knows....but it does happen....then why do i gamble?......i`m addicted like most honest people on here will admit and a potential rigged game goes with the territory.....i decided long ago, that i will gamble for fun,and am not a big bettor or a chaser...i`m lucky enough to be able to afford to wager responsibly(that means small;) )and enjoy it immensly...it`s the action that i crave...the money is actually secondary......thanks for posting that article shrimp...very interesting....

how hard would it be to give a ref a couple thousand bones to throw the first flag on a certain team so you could win the first penalty prop. think about it. the ref doesn't even affect the game to call illegal use of the hands, or holding on the first play of the game. and it can be called on every play. so who would suspect a fishy flag.

ya the FSU thing is a mess...there is a little bit more to the story than just that too. the fsu police searched and seized the computer of a 23 yr old that lives near campus.....he was allegedly a bookie down there. now i dont post too often on here, but in this case i had to...because i grew up with the kid that they think was the big time bookie there!! very small world..... but anyway. i had heard rumors of this before, and now there is alot more info coming out. we had always joked with him concerning his dad if he was a bookie......so this really doesnt surprise me at all. just thought id pass along that info to you guys on here. good luck in the bowls!!!

Prop limit on this is $500, so you're looking at having 4 accounts MAXING the bet to break even. Spreading the 'word' around could bank some dollars but really, the linesmakers know how much action on average this type of wager receives. It's monitored plus it's their job. When this bet normally sees 5-15k and starts going over the 30k margin for action, then something is obviously going on.

I understand the point you are trying to make, but this is really small time compared to actually attempting to 'fix' a game on the spread where millions and millions of dollars are wagered. (See Boxing) Whether or not that happened this year or in the past at FSU is the issue.
