Geron Plans to Begin Clinical Trials on Cancer Drug Candidate in 1st Half of 2007

MENLO PARK, Calif. (AP) -- Biotech drug developer Geron Corp. said Monday it plans to start human clinical trials on an experimental cancer treatment that attacks the stem cells thought responsible for relapses.
Shares of Geron rose 50 cents, or 5.4 percent, to $9.85 in premarket activity on the INET electronic exchange, after closing Friday at $9.35 on the Nasdaq. Shares have traded between $5.66 and $9.90 over the past 52 weeks.

Lab tests suggest that the company's GRN163L drug candidate acts against multiple myeloma, or cancer of the plasma cells that produce antibodies for the immune system. The company plans to begin a clinical trial on the drug in the first half of 2007.

Data suggests that the compound interferes with replication of cancer stem cells from three independent multiple myeloma cell lines.

Geron: Study on Experimental Cancer Treatment Suggests It May Benefit Breast Cancer Patients

MENLO PARK, Calif. (AP) -- Geron Corp. on Tuesday said the results of a university study of its experimental cancer treatment suggest that it may benefit breast cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy.
The Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology and Physics published a study by Indiana University researchers that show "a substantial synergistic effect" of Geron's treatment and radiation on breast cancer cells in test tubes and in mice bearing human breast cancer.

The treatment -- still called by its drug candidate designation, GRN163L -- is made to attack the stem cells thought responsible for cancer relapses.

In the study, cells treated for six weeks with GRN163L died more easily from radiation, suggesting that the treatment could result in increased killing of tumor cells than would happen with radiation alone.

Geron shares rose 18 cents, or 2 percent, to $9.02 in morning trading on the Nasdaq.

peddler , that pr went on to cite a reduction of 30 % !.. by now, you know what telomerase is, an enzyme produced by 90% of ALL cancer cells.. grn163L is a telomerase inhibitor, thereby causing the cells to die... { google the word telomerase sometime to see where most cancer research is focused}.. the press release you missed was the one for a new patent application by geron.. one of thier telomerase activators . this works in reverse, makes cells live longer. back in the dot.com heydays of the late 90,s, when geron hit 72 bucks, this was all they were working on..still active, as it is thier weapon of choice to combat hiv/aids { partnered with china ] the more you learn about this co. the more you will be impressed.. how about 40 more million in the bank{now over 200], and almost back to the same pps.??? p.s. thanks for posting the news here. with my limited computer skills i am luckey to be able to do this. pps expect an announcement from the fda within days oking beef and milk from cloned animals. as you must now know, geron OWNS cloning !!! pppps. also expect a nice pop when the new congress sits and passes embryonic stem cell funding, with enough votes for an override ! my best to all on this thread for a wonderful holiday season, doc

red, thanks for the Rodman information, it was awesome. With this new drug on the geron platform it seems grnvac1 is taking a backseat. the conference said they are "initiating sites & enrolling patients" to take the vaccine, you know anything about this? I need to get my old man into this enrollment.
