We?re one day into March Madness and if you?re still working with a perfect bracket, give yourself a pat on the back. The Associated Press reports about 95 percent of brackets missed at least one pick in the first eight games.
The two big party crashers: Dayton and Harvard. Dayton (No. 11 seed) knocked out Ohio State (No. 6 seed) along with 83 percent of Yahoo brackets, 81 percent of CBS brackets, and over 80 percent of ESPN brackets. Later in the afternoon, Harvard (No. 12 seed) took down Cincinnati (No. 7 seed), bringing the overall bracket failure rate to the 95 percent range.
Yahoo's Tourney Pick 'Em game watched their billion-dollar hopes get flushed after Dayton defeated Ohio State on Thursday.
The exact number who chose Ohio State -- and turned out to be wrong -- was 83.7 percent, though as Chase noted, "Those poolers aren't necessarily entered in the Quicken Loans Challenge, but any fluctuation would likely be minor."
At CBSSports.com, Dayton took out 81 percent of the poolers in the bracket challenge. By the time Harvard won, just 5 percent of the brackets were still perfect and it was only going to drop even more with the Bison roaming over the Sooners.
Of the 11 million brackets in ESPN?s Tournament Challenge, over 80 percent had Ohio State advancing to the next round. That?s about 8.8 million brackets with a blemish after one game.
And 2.2 percent had Ohio State going all the way to the Final Four: Oops!
After the first afternoon of games, just 5.7 percent of ESPN brackets had a chance at perfection.
Update: In ESPN?s Tournament Challenge, only 5.7% of brackets are still perfect.
