Arkansas -7 over North Texas *****
Have to come back to explain this game....skip this post because I would be remiss not telling this story...so if its boring come back tomorrow and will break down this game in another post..
It is Sept 1969....I am a freshman at North Texas St Univ...Mean Joe Green just graduated and was the 3rd or 4th pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers.. I need some electives to take and enroll in" Coaching Football" taught by Coach Rod Rust"...Coach Rust shows up on the 1st day...[think he showed up on the last day of classes} Coach Fred McCain off coordinator will be our instructor.....talks about the 1968 Mean Green team...No 1 in the nation in passing with NCAA record breaker Steve Ramsey...No 1 wr in the country Ron Shanklin{ also a Pitt Steeler the following year}..Ramsey set to break 7 NCAA passing records,etc,etc...
On the 1st day of class both Rust and McCain set up the 16 mm film...He tells us he wants us to see how North Texas got robbed in Little Rock vs Arkansas last year.
He sets the 16 mmm black and white film...we watch North Texas and Mean Joe shut their offense down..then I think in the early 4th qrt Ramsey throws a touchdown pass to Shanklin with Ark leading 17-15...it was a low pass but Shanklin catches it..the ref right on the ball calls for a TD...NT up 22-17....but hold it...another ref behind the play is waving it off saying Shanklin trapped it..incomplete pass...can't remember if the refs confer but no touchdown...now Coach Rust runs that play again to the class...and again..Shanklin made a clean catch..it was low but the ball never touched the ground.. Hogs end up 6th in the country,10-1 and win the Southwest conf title..
North texas got robbed...think we ended up 8-3 or something like that...but we really did win in Little Rock that day..
Coach McCain said with that southern drawl "you can never trust anyone from Arkansas or Oklahoma" he would become my all time favorite teacher and over the years McCain became Ath Dir...he is the coach who told stories that you just loved... my roommate from NY and I loved hearing story after story...we told coach we were NY Giant fans...he coached Spider Lockhart of the Giants..he would tell us Carl thought "he could cover Jesus Christ on a down and out..."... then he told us how Carl outscored the No 1 wr in the nation in Howard Twilly...from Tulsa....I didn't get many A's in my 4 yrs at North Texas but he gave me and Danny one....
Coach passed away about 10-15 years ago....but think he might be on the sidelines Saturday in Arkansas in spirt...I'm sure no one on the NT coaches staff knows this story...wish someone would tell them...
Back tomorrow capping the game
on a sad note Steve Ramsey who played for the Broncos and Giants died awhile back and Ronnie Shankin who played in a few Superbowls for Pittsbugh also passed away....but I got to see Ramsey break all 7 of the passing records...

And in 1973, The legendary coach Hayden Fry became the head coach at north Texas before heading for the ol alma mater the university of Iowa in 1979. :toast:

Arkansas -7 over North Texas *****
Ark is 1-1 after leading Col St 27-9 last week until total collapse to lose 34-27 ....wow..that is what you call a blown game...Morris the former Smoo coach is caught putting his system in with players left over from last yr's team..he is trying to use his " read-pass option attack" but the 2 hog qb's can't read... ..At Smoo he had 2 NFL wr's,solid running game,etc,etc... he takes over a bad Ark team with 2 avg qb's,no wr's and players he can't use his " read " attack...so hopefully after getting beat by CSU he goes back to the "drawing board " and figures out how to win in this conf...he has 2 qbs who both were benched in their last games..neither looked good...his wr's are avg..he does have a stud rb in Whaley who had 165 yds last week...he had half of there total yds...CSU had a field day vs the Hog secondary..Hog DL is pretty good...
Meanwhile North Texas is No 1 in the nation in passing...most yds,etc...Fine who is 5'8 has throw 7 td's already and avg over 430 passing yds.....but lets wait a second...he had big games vs Smoo who has no defense and beat Incarnate Word.. NT is averaging 568 yds per game...they are playing a different animal on Saturday...although Arkansas is not a very good team they do have size, speed and athleticism.
And one thing North Texas can't do..is run the ball....very weak rb's...with no run attack Morris can figure out what to do to stop the passing attack..and do not forget Morris who coached at Smoo played North Texas the past 3 years...Morris won 54-32,34-21 and 31-13...now I know he had some better talent at Smoo but he knows North Texas schemes and passing attacks..NT has some good wr's,Ol decent but hasn't really been tested...think Hog defense will not let Fine set up in the pocket and tear up their secondary...NT defense is a little above avg...not a strong defense... FAU and Troy at the end of last year scored over 50 pts each...
Ark has a good rb in Whaley who I think NT will have a tough time stopping...maybe their "dueling" qb's can find some openings downfield...
Littrell NT coach is good...has his kids playing great...2-0 and a lot of momentum...but don't think the mean green can stay with them... NT is always one of the worst teams in the country in stopping the run...last yr they gave up 208 yds a game...NT hasn't faced on both Offensive and defensive lines like they will....NT hasn't beaten a Power 5 team in 6 or 7 years...Arkansas paid Morris a lot of money to leave Smoo...after losing last week and blowing a 16 point lead think Hogs will be more focused this week... Morris has to figure out what type of schemes he wants to use...he knows the Mean green better then any other coach...
My heart says North Texas but think Ark can win this by 2-3 td's....unless the "ghosts of 1968 are on the field..but this game is in Fayettville not Little Rock..

Arkansas -6.5 over North Texas
But I played it at Ark -7 ******
Still a strong play...might play 1st qrt or half too

Army -6.5 over Hawaii **
Over 62 ***
Bows are scoring...Army after Duke loss is back to basics...beat Liberty pretty bad...Army got its fullbacks going..they have 4 good fb's..Holt and Slomka...then Davidson who was there best but now splits time..Cooper is solid and we haven't seen Walker break one at in the slot..Hopkins the qb needs 2 passing td's to surpass last yrs total...they ran 14-82 plays from the shot gun..think they will have a small problem vs the Bows offense but ball control and no turnovers is the nites key...like the over but Army controls the ball...its going to be a beautiful day here at the Point...high 70's to 80's..

OU -18.5 over Iowa St **
Even w/o key player Lincoln Riley and co roll out their offense..

Rutgers +3 over Kansas ***
Battle of the basement teams in the B-10 vs B-12...RU qb is playing but he is really green..great arm but needs to see the field..he has 5 ints in 1st 2 games.. RU was blown away by Ohio St...KU coming off 1st road win since Nixon was President..think Blackshear is a game breaker...and maybe RU gets Washington involved..one of the best TE's in the conf..

Texas St +10 over So Bama **
Bobcats looked really bad vs Rutgers ..Jags lost to La Tech by 4 and Ok st 55-13..think Bobcat qb Jones can keep this close

Ohio St -12.5 over TCU **
TCU has such a great defense...solid qb and good rb's...just think Ohio St has to much...Turpin is dangerous..Robinson at qb tough..last yr TCU's fellow brother OU came up to Columbus and beat the Buckeyes 31-16,,think they only lost 1 game since..Haskins and co have to many weapons and OSU defense can slow down the Frogs..think this is a close game until the 4 th qrt..

Michigan -35.5 over Smoo **
Smoo has no rb's,no wr's a qb who is in trouble..a bad defense that puts no pressure on the qb....think there defense is giving up 458 yds a game...NT's Fine was 40-50 and had all day to sit in the pocket...Blue has Patterson on offense and almost the entire defense back last yr that held these teams to 17,13,14,10,14,10,10 ...think Smoo could get shut out...but Harbaugh might sub early with Nebraska next...backdoor is there possibly...

Baylor -5 over Duke **
With Dukies qb out think the Bears have enough on offense..

Boise St +2 over Ok St **
Boise's only power 5 opponent for the year..win this and brezze thru the other 9 or 10..and you could be the USF of 2017...

Great story Box. I love these history stories, I'm at the exact age where I can really enjoy them even although I didn't grow up with the game.

Good luck with your picks today, and every day.

Army-Hawaii over ***
Had tickets to this game but gave them up...my buddies start tail gating at 9.30 am ...getting to old...by kickoff at noon they will be flying high....think I get the ticket because they know on the way home I'm the designated driver....going to take Army because it dropped to under a touchdown -6.5...their defense vs the Bows scares me...Bows qb McDonald in 3 games leads the nation in passing with 1,600 and 13 tds..he is 6'4 and mobile..Army historically has trouble with mobile qb's..Bows just played Navy's triple option and there defense couldn't stop them ..Navy scored 41 points...but Navy couldn't stop Hawaii and the Bows won 59-41...I'm kinda thing the same thing could happen today..think Army is a little better then Navy this year..although there have been many great rb's at Army over the years I have never seen so many talented full backs...Walker there speedster in the slot hasn't really done anything yet.. and Cooper has became the cadet favorite..he has fullback power and size and has enough speed to by a slot back..everyone on campus has been whispering Coopers name..secret weapon..Hopkins the qb has to keep the ball...after last year having 4 fumbles in 800 carries Hopkins has already surpassed that..but on the flip side he can pass..lets say pass better then his predecessors....he has 2 td passes when last year they had 4 all year...Army defense is just a little above avg...the last time they played vs a good passing qb it was vs North Texas's Fine..last season game..score was North Texas 52-49...
And a big key to this game...if Hawaii gets out in front which they can do and say lead by 10 pts..Army has to play catchup..esp in the 4th qrt...that is not there game..Army has the worst FG kicker which is really bad for me taking the over..he is 1-6...Monken is walking around PE classes on campus to see if anyone can kick a FG...
A small lean taking the -6.5 because Hawaii defense could be so worn out with Cadets fresh legs...think Walker or Cooper will have a breakout out at home..think Army defense will have mucho problems slowing down the Bows...Army needs a cold 20 degrees day, with a winds at 25 MPH and wind chill at 8 degrees...but today here at the Point is 79 degree and sunny with no wind..think there could be a lot of scoring esp if Army doesn't fumble the ball....best trend... Hawaii is 2-10 in the Eastern time zone...so if its a 12 noon start what time is it in Honolulu...have no idea but it has to be breakfast time I think good luck today..Go Arkansas..

Loss or Congrats for an alumni Win but I do know that Double 2 is in fucking shock at how badly the hogs and Auburn are playing this year....GL on the rest of your games.
