Disagree with some here that believe the punishment is to much. Also disagree that wallace is responsable for artest going into the stands. If artest was so pissed off that a plastic cup hit him that he went into the stands and began beating people that had nothing to do with it, then why did he do nothing when he was punched in the throat by wallace. The obvious answer is he didnt want his ass whiped by wallace, but didnt mind swinging at fans. I personally wish the fans would have beat the living shit out of artest and the rest of the players throwing punches in the stands. Having said that the idiots that came out on the court deserved to have their asses whipped as well. Bottom line is that much, much worse things have been done to players in the past and they let the proper athourities handle it. Artest gets hit with a plastic cup and starts punching out fans.

stern shouldve suspended all three....artest, jackson and oneil for the yr....there was no reason for any of them to start hitting people....if any of us had done the same, anywhere or anytime, we would be taken directly to jail....
how about that little white dude that artest went after....he didnt do a thing...he still was holding his beer...unless he was 2-fisting them...how in the fuk did he throw a beer at artest?
theres gonna be some huge lawsuits...hope the innocent fans take multi-millions of the pussy-a-holes....artest is a punk..if he was such a bad ass then y did he back down from b. wallace who shoved him in the throat/chest...but instead goes after a little white dude ,half his size, who might have threw a plastic cup at him.....gimme a break...

This is possibly the greatest NBA game ever played, if you look at it from the perspective of the biggest NBA punk (Artest) & thugs getting what they deserved. Actually, I thought O'neill & especially Jackson got off very light. And they are free men, not in the slammer, either. The legal aftermath should be interesting......I wonder who is gonna be at the top (or bottom) on the lawsuit list. Players get individually sued? NBA collectively gets sued? Pacers get sued. Pacers arena gets sued? Security gets sued? My guess is probably all of them. Players association gonna pay the lawsuits ?
The inner city mentality has gone a bit too far here, and all should
take their just punishments like men...............after all, that is what they were defending, right?............their manhood.

As someone who has been around the NBA business side for a length of time, the suspensions reflect the desire of the NBA brand identity to reach out to those corporate sponsors that the NBA depends on. The NBA cannot afford to lose the people who sit on the front rows and support the teams primarily monetarily.

This isn't about "if someone hit you in a bar", its about the NBA erasing the doubt a corporation might have about purchasing courtside seating and then allowing its patrons in those seats. Its about assuring those donors that this behavior is not the norm.

Do those fans that were in the wrong deserve full punishment? yes. Will they get it? hopeully so. Can they be punished the same way an NBA player is punished? of course not.

Its not about the players or the casual fans, its about the NBA image to sponsors.

I am pretty sure I saw the little white dude pull some ice out of his cup and throw it at Artest -- of course he threw like a little girl.

Personally, I have no problem with Stearn coming down hard on the players to set a strong precedent. But I didn't hear him say a single word about setting a precedent for fan behavior. Every fan involved should be banned from setting foot in the arena again.

While I have no sympathy for any of the fans who got the shit pounded out of them what Artest should have done was demand to have the idiots names and then press charges on them. What he did was certainly wrong but lets face it in the middle of competition the adrenalin is pumped up.

Since when does buying a ticket to a sporting event give someone license to endanger athletes? Throwing ice or anything else is NOT acceptable. That is what you might expect from middle school or high school punks. What if a player is hit in the eye or slips on the ice?

Why do some see nothing wrong with the fans deplorable behavior?

Maybe the NBA should simply not allow fans anywhere near the action anymore. It would have been preferable for security to whoop the punks azzes rather than the Pacers though.

g-man--not trying to defend Artest.....he should be suspended for going in the stands---no doubt--at least half the year---but I put the question to you--what would you do? You are absolutely right, he was not in immediate danger and hind sight is 20/20..he is clearly in the wrong. He should NEVER have gone into the stands....Guess, as a Pacer fan, this is hard to swallow...from Finals Contender to Pretender..guess the Pistons/Heat have one less hurdle in the playoffs. I guess I was venting in my own way..jjc

This is a good thread. It really shows what people think and how some people are just such INDY/DETROIT HOMERS that they don't understand the reason for punishment.

Artest went into the crowd and punch knocked someone out. If it was me, I would take the $100,000 per punch but if it was my family member I would SNAP!!! Punishment deserved. All the other indy players got what they deserved.. if not the Oniel and Jackson should have gotten more. Just no place for this crap.

Walace got what?! 6 games for pushing Artest HARD?? He didnt even fall. I think that happens at least once a day or two in the NBA, maybe not that hard but other than that Wallace did nothing. He did not start it, the fan in the crowd covered that angle. He may have PRE-Started-it.. but.. come on!

Artest is an idiot. The fans were all loaded and I think if they come onto the court/field/ice/penality box they should be fair game but a player should never go into the crowd.

The next game these two teams play is going to be smashing!!!! :)

look i am not saying artest is not an idiot at times,, but what i don't like is they have doomed indiana for the year. they had a very good chance at making a run for the championship, now they will be very very lucky if they make the playoffs, just think the penalty was extremely stiff and hell reggie miller getting suspended for 1 game, he was trying to stop the fighting, geez christ...

CG I am unaware of the NBA rule book particulars, BUT Federation rules (HS & some NCAA) state that IF you leave the bench area during an altercation you are gone, DQ (and I don't mean dairy queen) not only for the rest of this game but the next two as well.

It matters not IF you left your seat to fight, make peace, sell tickets for the fight, OR broke wind and was propelled off of your a$$ by the force of the f@rt you are gone, you get to watch the rest of the game FBS (that is from behind the seats aka when a player says fuxking bull s-hit)

I still say any game official worth his salt would have shipped Ron, the Rapper, Artest when he laid down on the scorers table!

The officials are there to protect the integrity of the game unfortunately the NBA has little or none at this point.

My opinion, Have a safe and happy holiday all.
