At the Gate - Saturday

It is Travers Day at the Spa today, and although we won?t see Rachel Alexandra or Mine That Bird compete, the NYRA put together an outstanding 13 race card that features six stakes races.

We need to get up a bit earlier today as well. Post time for the opener is 11:35 ET.

The feature is the $1 million Shadwell Travers Stakes (G1), one of three Grade 1 races on the card.

Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird is in the race along with Quality Road, who is the 8/5 morning line favorite.

Quality Road might have gone off as the favorite in the Kentucky Derby (G1) back in May, but a quarter crack knocked him out of action after a very impressive score in the Florida Derby.

The three Grade 1?s on today?s card will be televised live on ESPN during a 90-minute telecast that kicks off at 4:30 ET.

Thankfully, today?s Little League World Series is on ABC, meaning the telecast won?t be preempted by 12 year olds playing baseball this year.

There is plenty of star power on the card. Among the horses competing is Sara Louise in the Victory Ride Stakes (G3). She actually finished ahead of Rachel Alexandra last November at Churchill Downs.

Other top horses on the card today include Cocoa Beach, Indian Blessing, Munnings, Vineyard Haven, Big Drama, and Kensei.

Crank up the wagering account, it is going to be a long and exciting day of wagering.

Here is today's opener from Saratoga to get our day off to a good start:

SAR Race 1 Alw $59,000N1X (11:35 ET)

#6 Separatist 3/1

#4 Cardiff Road 8/1

#3 The Plot Thickens 7/2

#11 Pegasus Tommy D. 4/1

Analysis: #6 Separatist was off a step slow last out when cutting back to 5 1/2 furlongs, gained between runners in the stretch and made a mild late run to finish fourth, beaten three lengths for the top spot. The third place finisher in the race was City Sneakers, who returned to beat state bred Alw-1 company in his next start on Thursday here. I like the stretch back out to a route here and he was a game second going lone two back which was his first start against winners. The gelding is by FuPeg out of a Deputy Minster mare that has dropped eight other winners including a couple of stakes winners, top earner Gratiaen ($288K). Tagg is having a strong meeting, hitting at a 25% clip. The gelding is bred top and bottom to handle a wet track, so if this comes off the turf due to rain he still fits well here.

#4 Cardiff Road is 1 for 18 in his career, making him tough to play on top. However, he had trouble in his last two starts, last out having to steady in traffic and two back was off poorly and had to steady in traffic on the turn. He is back with state breds here and his lone did come over the turf here. Worth tossing in the mix here if we see most of his 8/1 ML.

Wagering

WIN: #6 to win at 5/2 or better.

EX: 4,6 / 3,4,6,11

TRI: 4,6 / 3,4,6,11 / 2,3,4,6,7,11

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 12 Shadwell Travers S. G1 (5:46 ET)

#7 Kensei 7/2

#3 Warrior's Reward 8/1

#4 Quality Road 8/5

#6 Summer Bird 3/1

Analysis: #7 Kensei handled his first trip around two turns in fine fashion, taking the Jim Dandy (G2) last out here going nine furlongs. The colt pressed the early pace, took over the lead at the three-eighths, opened up a clear lead in midstretch and drew clear late. The colt caught a main track that day that seemed to be more favorable to outside stalkers and closers. His last loss came at seven furlongs in the Woody Stephens (G2) where he had a tough trip in a third place finish behind Munnings, who came back to win the Tom Fool (G2) in his next start. It looks like the colt should get a good tracking trip under jockey Edgar Prado and we should catch a fair price.

#3 Warrior?s Reward also exits the Jim Dandy and he did the dirty work, setting the early fractions and holding on well for the runner up spot despite racing against the track bias that day. He has an excuse two back in the Dwyer where he stumbled badly coming out of the gate as the 4/5 chalk. I don?t think we have seen the best of this guy and he showed he could handle a track with some moisture in it.

#4 Quality Road is going to be the short priced favorite in here. The colt was one of the early Kentucky Derby favorites after he won the Florida Derby (G1), but a foot ailment took him off the Triple Crown Trail. He returned last out in the Amsterdam (G2), and despite stumbling slightly coming out of the gate he was able to get a good position in the early going, came with a five wide run at the quarter pole, took over in midstretch and edged clear late. He set a track record in the process. Going from seven furlongs to 1 ? miles in his second start off a four month break could be asking a lot, especially at a short price. He will be tough to beat, but at 8/5 or likely less, I?ll take a stand that we can beat him for the top spot.

Wagering

WIN: #7 to win at 5/2 or better.

EX: 3,7 / 3,4,6,7

TRI: 3,7 / 3,4,6,7 / 2,3,4,6,7

Live Longshots:

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga

R1: #4 Cardiff Road 8/1

R2: #9 Sheryl?s Melody 10/1

R2: #8 Cautionary Tale 8/1

R4: #2 Jack Spratt 8/1

R5: #12 Spartan King 10/1

R6: #3 The Roundhouse 15/1

R7: #2 Trix in the City 10/1

R8: #2 Three Day Rush 12/1

R9: #4 Dyna?s Lassie 15/1

R10: #3 Tar Heel Mom 10/1

R12: #3 Warrior?s Reward 8/1

R13: #4 Don?t You Linger 15/1

Good luck today!

FIRST RACE ? QUIET LIGHTNING looked good beating a softer field recently and looks tough on the raise for new trainer Kruljac. TOO MUCH HEAT, a $16,000 Abrams claim, is racing in sharp form and warrants a strong look right back following a clever win vs. softer. BENEZIT scored nicely recently and has a look right back after being re-claimed by McCarthy. Long shot: Sax.

SECOND RACE ? SPEEDIN EXCESS bids for her third straight win and catches what appears to be a beloe par field for the level. Let's stick with the sharp filly. LOVEHI, freshened since February, has a look if ready and the works look solid for Harrington. UNWORLDLY HEAT, first or second in seven of 12 career starts, figures for a minor award. Long shot: Via Veneto.

THIRD RACE ? SAINTLY SPIRIT looked good winning over this track earlier this month and seems capable of a repeat performance for new trainer Mullins. Rosario stays aboard. VOODOO'S VISION, genuine and consistent, should be within range throughout from the rail and is a "must use" in the exotics. DAVE'S REVENGE, now in the Miller barn following a nice score vs. softer, is another capble of improving and should be right there. Long shot: Lunch Money.

FOURTH RACE ? KISS THE COOKE beat a slightly softer field in clever fashion recently and seems sharp enough to take this one level class hike in stride. Gryder stays aboard for Koriner. HARD WOMAN also is fresh from a score over this track and has big look right back. KNEELING'S PRIDE adds blinkers for new trainer Miller and seems sure to make a forward move. Long shot: Bewitching Gem.

FIFTH RACE ? QUICK MISS has been working like a good thing for Sherman, is bred for speed, and seems as good as any in a wide open affair. SLEEPING SIOUX, fifth of 11 in her debut, seem sure to improve with experience and figures in the thick of things throughout. SKY ACCOUNT has been working fast for Gonzalez and may be able to run a bit. Long shot: Halfaponderosa.

SIXTH RACE ? MONA DE MOMMA earned a huge figure when graduating over this track last month and this promising daughter of Speightstown looks like a repeater on the raise. MISS SILVER BROOK has been a bit of a disappointment for Canani but remains well regarded and should be moving well in the lane. UNZIP ME beat a state bred allowance field recently from off the pace and with clear sailing from the rail could be tough right back. Long shot: Puff Maddie.
SEVENTH RACE ? WINTER CANYON found his best stride too late in a promising debut when third earlier this month and should be ready to graduate today for Mandella. GET MY FIX, beaten a neck in the same race our top pick exits, should be in thick of things again today. DAVE IN DIXIE is bred for speed, seems fit for Sadler, and looks like a live debut runner. Long shot: My Friend Beernie.

EIGHTH RACE ? MONTEREY JAZZ shortens up to a mile and shoud be able to control this race from start to finish. FERNELEY figures to be running on strongly and seems capable of out finishing the others. MEDICI CODE gets the rail for his comeback, likes this turf course, and could be dangeorus with a ground saving trip. Long shot: Becrux.
NINTH RACE ? SHESOPROVOCATIVE is a fast working first timer in the Becerra barn and seems fit and ready to win in an open, unclassified field of maiden juvenile fillies. MISS GEORGIE GIRL may have been a bit short in her debut but figures to improve consideably today and adds blinkers for Walsh. EXCELLENT NEWS removes blinkers after finishing a decent fourth in her bow and is another very likely to move forward with experience. Long shot: Judge Joan.
10TH RACE ? SELF MADE MAN chased tougher in his first local start, and his first since May, and should be set for his best. Rosario stays aboard for Mitchell. ON FIRE figures to be closing well and is long ovedue for a win. WILD AND READY is another seeking his first score of the year but his recent form makes a him a solid fit at this level. Long shot: Taco Willy.
Best bet: Winter Canyon (7th).

Synthetic safety is questionable

Synthetic safety is questionable

Synthetic safety is questionable

DEL MAR ? Thoroughbreds have suffered a higher number of fatal rear leg injuries on synthetic surfaces than dirt, according to a UC Davis study of horse necropsies from 2008.
In an oral, PowerPoint-supplemented report Thursday to the California Horse Racing Board, Dr. Hailu Kinde, director of the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System, said there were 19 deaths from injuries to rear legs on synthetic tracks and one death on dirt because of a similar injury.
On Thursday, CHRB medical director Dr. Rick Arthur called it ?the most significant information that has come from the 2008 study.
?The data suggests a trend for the number of hind end injuries on synthetics and supports what we have been hearing from trainers and veterinarians,? Arthur said yesterday by telephone.
The study was limited to California race tracks. The major venues ? Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, Del Mar and Golden Gate Fields ? all have CHRB-mandated synthetic surfaces. The ?dirt? statistics were from the now defunct Bay Meadows in Northern California, smaller tracks like Los Alamitos and Fairplex Park, and major training centers like San Luis Rey Downs in Bonsall.
The largest number of fatal fractures were front leg injuries with 74 on synthetic tracks compared to 73 on dirt surfaces.
There were 351 horses submitted for post-mortems. Of those, 163 had incurred injuries while racing, 93 in training and 95 deaths were listed as from ?other? causes, to include heart attacks, colic and such.
Of the racing related deaths, 111 of 256 were on synthetic tracks, according to the report.
When asked for an opinion at Thursday's meeting on whether dirt or synthetic surfaces were safer, Dr. Kinde said: ?The data is not yet analyzed.?
Arthur pointed out that the number of ?starts? ? horses and races ? might be three times more at the synthetic major tracks than at the dirt courses. He also said the study, conducted through the calendar year, came at one of the worst periods for synthetic surfaces, when major problems beset Santa Anita.
?I don't think this is the beginning of the end (for synthetics),? Arthur said. ?There are certainly issues to be addressed and synthetics have been frustrating for everybody. There is no middle ground of opinion and it seems to have overtaken everything else (for debate).
?But the one true parameter is in terms of racing fatalities and the preliminary research shows that they are down dramatically.?
Arthur said that for the first six months of this year the number of fatalities on synthetics was 1 per 1,000 starts, which is comparable to Australian or European numbers. Historically, the U.S. fatality rate has been around 3.1 per thousand.

For Bejarano, it's ?great to be back?

For Bejarano, it's ?great to be back?

For Bejarano, it's ?great to be back?

Jockey shut out in return to racing

DEL MAR ? Rafael Bejarano may be the masked man of the races here for awhile.
But he made no attempt to mask his feelings after riding three races yesterday, his first afternoon action since a spill July 22 when he was kicked in the face by a trailing horse, incurring multiple facial fractures requiring surgery.
?I feel good, I feel confident and I feel great to be back and to be coming back at Del Mar,? said Bejarano, who was injured on the first racing day and came back on the 28th.
In his first race back, the fourth on yesterday's card, Bejarano had Wings of Sound in the lead entering the final 16th, but settled for second behind a hard-charging Alfarabi and Garrett Gomez.
?I thought I was going to win,? Bejarano said. ?I was really tired, but the horse run good and it (not winning) is part of the game.?
In the sixth, betting favorite Hudler was well-placed for three quarters of a mile but had nothing left in the stretch and finished last of eight.
Bejarano's final mount, Havens Lake, made a belated run but finished sixth.
On Thursday, Bejarano said that he had little recollection of the spill that resulted in injuries which he will protect with a plastic mask when riding through the remaining nine days of the meeting.
?I remember there was so much pain in my face and I woke up in the hospital with the doctor talking to me and saying it's going to be OK,? Bejarano said. ?My face felt like it was on fire and I didn't know how they would put it out.?
The surgeries to repair a broken jaw and other facial bones took six hours and 10 titanium plates. Bejarano said that the surgeries were done through his mouth and palate and there was no cutting on his face.
?It's amazing what they can do,? he said. ?They did an excellent job with my face and everything is fine now.?
A silver lining: Doctors at Scripps La Jolla wrote a letter to a lawyer in Florida on behalf of their patient. The lawyer sent it on to the embassy in Peru and, as a result, Bejarano's mother has gotten a travel visa and in the coming weeks, will be visiting the United States for the first time.

Black Mamba wins
Black Mamba, ridden by Mike Smith, scored a three-quarter length victory in yesterday's $89,020 featured CTT and Thoroughbred Owners of California Handicap.
It was the sixth win in 28 career starts for the 6-year-old New Zealand-bred mare, who now has career earnings of $869,763 for the Doubledown Stables Inc. owners.
Black Mamba, the winner of last year's Grade I John C. Mabee Handicap here, wasn't overly bothered by the 1⅜-mile distance of the turf test even though she hadn't been given an assignment at that distance before.
Smith had his horse second behind pace-setting Gloria Goodbody for the first mile, run in 1:38.81, then was surprised to see David Flores on Lemon Chiffon spurt past and get the lead entering the stretch.
Black Mamba fought back to take the lead past midstretch and held on from there, completing the course in 2:14.38.
The 4-5 favorite, Black Mamba returned $3.60 $2.60 and $2.10. Lemon Chifon paid $3.00 $2.40 and Rosa Grace $2.60 to show.

Closers
With four double-figure win payoffs in the Pick Six series there were no tickets identifying all six winners creating a carryover to today of $116,087 . . . Joe Talamo, Garrett Gomez and Martin Pedroza all had two wins on the card. Talamo has 27 wins, two fewer than injured Tyler Baze, who is second behind Joel Rosario . . . Monterey Jazz is the 7-5 opening line favorite in a field of 10 for today's featured Grade II, $300,000 Del Mar Mile
