At the Gate - Saturday

SORRY HARD TIMES, SUFFERING FROM MAJOR HUA DISORDER TODAY

As a native Marylander, the Maryland Million program was one of my favorite days of the year. Restricted to Maryland breds, an all stakes program with $1 million in purses usually led to exciting racing and excellent wagering opportunities.

This year, the 24th running takes place on Saturday. The program is now called the Jim McKay Maryland Million, named after the sportscaster and Maryland horseman that came up with the idea, which has now been copied by nearly every other racing state in the U.S.

Maryland racing has been hurt by neighboring states that now have slot machines, and racing in the state is just a shell of what it used to be.

Some long time trainers in the state are now based at either Philadelphia Park or Delaware Park, which has purses fueled by slot machines.

I no longer bother to handicap or wager on Maryland racing, despite the fact I cut my teeth as a handicapper playing the ponies in my home state, as well as landing in the winners circle as an owner for the first time at Laurel Park.

I did break down today?s marquee event, the Maryland Million Classic, which is below.

Here is today's opening race from Belmont Park to get our day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Clm $16,000N1Y (1:00 ET)

#2 I'llthinkofsumthin 3/1

#6 O'Sotopretty 6/1

#7 Gattinara 10/1

#10 Dressmaker 6/1

#2 I'llthinkofsumthin fits well here in this $16K claimer for non-winners of a race in two months. The filly beat $35K claimers three back in the mud in a race taken off the turf, which was her first start for the Brown barn off the claim. The filly tried turf in her last two starts, checking in fifth in both outings. The return to dirt suits and she has landed in the exacta in all four trips over the main track here. If she runs back to her last two main track efforts, she will be tough to beat in this softer spot.

#6 O'Sotopretty came up the inside with a good late rally to finish second against $20K non-winners of two or straight three year olds. She was claimed out of the race by the DiPrima barn that is 16% winners first off the claim. Her speed figs are coming up on the light side but she has landed in the exacta in 6 of her 9 career starts and beat straight three year olds fillies for a $20K tag three back at Churchill Downs. She should get a good pace set up here as there is plenty of early zip signed up to go here.

Wagering

WIN: #2 to win at 2/1 or better.

EX: 2,6 / 2,6,7,10

TRI: 2,6 / 2,6,7,10 / 2,4,6,7,10

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 9 Gallant Bloom Handicap G2 (5:15 ET)

#2 Indian Blessing 8/5

#3 Sara Louise 7/5

#6 Thunders Dove 6/1

#7 P.S.U. Grad 12/1

#2 Indian Blessing looks primed and ready for a good effort today, which is her fourth start of the year. The two-time Eclipse Award winner is seeking her first win of the year. She started in Dubai where she ran a solid seconds against the boys in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1), then was fourth in the Desert Stormer as the beaten chalk. Last out she set the early fractions in the Ballerina (G1) and was no match late for Music Note. The third place finisher in that race was Informed Decision, who came back to win the $400,000 Presque Isle Downs Masters in her next outing on Sept. 12. The filly this race, which she won last year, as a stepping-stone to the Breeders? Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, where she ran second last year. She has had a myriad of small issues, but her last two works suggest she is ready to fire.

#3 Sara Louise came off a nine-month layoff with a sharp win in the Victory Ride (G3) at the Spa in the slop. The runner up in the race was Bold Union, who came back to win the Endine (G3) in her next start on Sept. 12. The bin Suroor barn has been on fire, hitting at a 36% clip over the last 90 days and that includes six graded stakes wins. The filly has the distinction of being the last runner to finish ahead of Rachel Alexandra when she beat the super filly winning the Pocahontas (G3) last November. Does she regress off the big score last out or does she move forward? A real tough call at a short price.

Wagering

WIN: #2 to win at 8/5 or better.

EX: 2,3 / 2,3,6,7

TRI: 2,3 / 2,3,6,7 / 2,3,5,6,7

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Laurel Park:

LRL Race 11 Maryland Million Classic (6:12 ET)

#6 Regal Solo 6/1

#10 Sweet Goodbye 8/1

#8 Rhythm Master 3/1

#1 Broadway Producer 9/5

#6 Regal Solo has done his best work around one turn but is coming off a sharp win last out against optional claimers going seven furlongs and was claimed out of the race. He now goes for the Dilodovico barn that has won with eight of his last 15 first off the claim. The gelding has won 4 of 10 over the main track here and was a solid second here in the Private Terms Stakes last year. The barn is 27% winners moving runners from sprint to route and the gelding has enough pedigree to handle the stretch out.

#10 Sweet Goodbye is taking on the boys here and she fits. She went gate to wire to win the two turn Pink Ribbon at seven furlongs at Charles Town in her last outing, which was off a eight-month layoff. She won the Maryland Million Oaks here last year during a three-year-old campaign where she won five of seven starts. The Grove barn is 30% winners (with a +ROI) with horses making their second start off a +180 day layoff.

#8 Rhythm Master was a good second last out in the restricted Governors Day in the slop at Delaware Park. The gelding set the early fractions and could not hold off the winner in the stretch. He was making his first start after getting claimed for $35,000 two back, taken from the Tony Dutrow barn. The new barn has hit at a 19% clip this year with limited stock. McClelland is a sharp trainer who learned plenty while assistant trainer to Howard Wolfendale, one of Maryland?s top claiming barns. There is a slight chance of some rain and I will like this guy more if the track comes up wet.

Wagering

WIN: #6 to win at 4/1 or better.

EX: 6,10 / 1.6.8.10

TRI: 6,10 / 1,6,8,10 / 1,2,6,8,10

Live Longshots:

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Belmont Park

R1: #7 Gattinara 10/1

R2: #4 Flying Valentine 12/1

R4: #8 Stylish Mon 8/1

R4: #6 Recruit 8/1

R5: #4 Gaelic Will 8/1

R6: #4 Holy Anthem 8/1

R7: #11 Five Boroughs 20/1

R9: #7 P.S.U. Grad 12/1

R10: #1 Adastraperaspera 8/1

Good luck today!

Track: Belmont Park SELECT NEW CARD

26 SEP 09

By Dave Litfin

BEST BET: Runfromthestorm (10th race)

First Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. I'llthinkofsumthin 2. Blitzensfoxyvixsin 3. Dressmaker

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'LLTHINKOFSUMTHIN had a useful effort running evenly in return from layoff on turf at Monmouth; back to Big Sandy, where she's never been worse than second in four starts. BLITZENSFOXYVIXSIN has never been out of the money on this track; cuts back to best distance. DRESSMAKER has had a very productive season on turf and dirt, primarily at longer distances.

Second Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Thundering Roar 2. Solutionfinders 3. Holy Ego

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THUNDERING ROAR finished in the money both starts at Saratoga to begin career, recording improved pace and final-time figures second out; sharp workout last Saturday. SOLUTIONFINDERS broke awkwardly and trailed early, rallied wide to make up ground behind the choice in debut; could easily make up that 2 1/2-length difference. HOLY EGO is a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Wishful Tomcat; Tomlinson rating of 364 and several good workouts on turf suggest he may improve off June bow.

Third Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Future Prospect 2. R Clear Victory 3. Naughty New Yorker

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FUTURE PROSPECT turned in one of the more remarkable performances of the summer when he dueled R CLEAR VICTORY into defeat and held off late runs from millionaire NAUGHTY NEW YORKER and DR. D. F. C. in the Funny Cide; triple-digit Beyers in last two on this track. R Clear Victory beat the top pick when able to shake loose in the slop second time back from a layoff; gets a favorable weight shift after stopping in the Funny Cide.

Fourth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Recruit 2. Count Catamount 3. Wild Entry

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RECRUIT, a half-brother to the multiple sprint stakes winner Indyanne, has worked bullets before and after lackluster debut in the slop at 3-1; top-rated for turf, Pletcher-trained Whydah ($21.20) won off a switch to grass second out last week. COUNT CATAMOUNT looms the one to catch stretching out from two shorter dirt sprints contesting pace; two grass works this month for profitable first-turf trainer. WILD ENTRY gets blinkers on after five consecutive defeats as the chalk including two at odds-on; two best figures came on Gulfstream turf.

Fifth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Global Force 2. Framed 3. Ritual

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GLOBAL FORCE is a half to three multiple winners; $1.2 million yearling has been readied by a profitable debut trainer. FRAMED is a half to four multiple winners, among them Primary Suspect, winner of the Grade 3 Toboggan at Aqueduct for these connections; mate GONNA GET BURNED is by a solid first-out sire. RITUAL is a half to Happy Hunting, winner of the Grade 3 Aqueduct 'Cap for the Phipps Stable; bears watching.

Sixth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Mr Sandman 2. Kutais 3. Holy Anthem

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MR SANDMAN improved steadily in three starts through the summer, capped by a front-running maiden victory on this course opening weekend; may control the pace again as he steps to the next logical spot. KUTAIS showed versatility and consistency in progressively tougher fields through late spring and midsummer, until a no-chance try at 56-1 in the Bernard Baruch vs. Justenuffhumor, who remains unbeaten on turf; may rebound. HOLY ANTHEM showed improvement in two starts with blinkers on when returned at Churchill Downs last May/June; freshened up again by dangerous layoff barn.

Seventh Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Golden Guska 2. Pure Pulpit 3. Khan of Khans

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GOLDEN GUSKA has raced twice at 6fs on this course, winning a maiden sprint last fall and just missing while 8 1/4 lengths clear for second July 4; freshened after wide, two-move running line opening weekend at the Spa. PURE PULPIT has been idle three months since wide trip on soft turf; 5-year-old's only firm-turf start this year came vs. Mikoshi, who has come back with three in-the-money finishes in stakes since then. KHAN OF KHANS widened his lead at every call to dominate maidens on this course July 16; alert breaker should make good use of inside position.

Eighth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Dirty Water Dog 2. Missinglisalewis 3. City Sneakers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIRTY WATER DOG is hard to gauge off a 10-month absence, but best races last year stack up favorably and he has been working every 6-8 days since mid-August; potent trainer/jockey combo. MISSINGLISALEWIS has been a close second on firm and soft turf recently; may be circling back around to another peak figure. CITY SNEAKERS overcame outside post for gutsy front-end score when stretched out at Saratoga; back in nine days after chasing at 6fs, may get clear early from post 2.

Ninth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Sara Louise 2. Indian Blessing 3. Thunders Dove

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SARA LOUISE returned from nine-month layoff with a strong performance in the Victory Ride to run down Bold Union, who subsequently came back to wire older rivals in the Endine at Delaware Park; sharp work over the track Monday for red-hot outfit, may sit a good trip. INDIAN BLESSING missed training time midsummer and may have been short in the Ballerina when second best to multiple Grade 1 winner Music Note; put up a trio of triple-digit figures at Belmont as a 3-year-old (including a 106 winning this race by daylight), the question is whether she's still that fast at 4. THUNDERS DOVE has won five in a row by open lengths, returned to stalk a fast pace first time out in 10 months; part of strong early tempo along with 'Blessing and ANY LIMIT.

Tenth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Runfromthestorm 2. Meese Rocks 3. Hold the Cruiser

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RUNFROMTHESTORM returned from a five-month layoff to draw off decisively for maiden win over Better Than Swiss, who came back to win last week; improving with every start, must run down MEESE ROCKS. The latter was sidelined for 11 months, returned with a Beyer pair-up for maiden win and near-miss at this level; must avoid a regression. HOLD THE CRUISER put in a sustained rally, altered course to nip Meese Rocks for second in a blanket finish as the favorite closing day at Saratoga; never taken a backward step by the numbers.

BATAGLIA SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26

BATAGLIA SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26
Race 1
COPY MY NOTES and ARMORED TRUCK (the Woodard entry) both take a drop in class and either one is capable of winning the opener. SYSTEMS STEVE looked sharp winning over the track last out. A repeat of that effort would make him tough here. LIVER has the speed to be dangerous.

Race 2
ASK DON?T TELL has been off since a dull effort at Arlington back in June. She drops in for a tag for her return and Leparoux picks up the mount for Helen Pitts-Blasi. Give her the edge. TURN TO BERNSTEIN comes off a game runner-up finish. She is still winless after 17 tries but can't be left out of the gimmicks. LADY DURLYN has tactical speed and Borel in the irons.

Race 3
DR. RHYTHM looked very sharp winning over the track last time out. He loves the track here at Turfway and rates the edge. ZYDACO comes in off two nice wins in a row at River. He's run well over the track in the past and looks like the one to beat. FLASHING FLAME has looked sharp in each of his last two wins and would be no surprise in a well matched race.

Race 4: Simulcast from Kentucky Downs

Race 5
KANZEL comes in off a nice win on the grass at Ellis. He's been running well against tougher all year and looks like a good bet to make it two in a row for Margolis and Court. BARITONE figures to be the one to beat. PISO MOJADO hasn't shown much in either of his starts over all-weather track but his best makes him a definite contender today.

Race 6: Simulcast from Kentucky Downs

Race 7
INSTANT MESSAGE ran an even race at Ellis last time out coming off a two month layoff. He picks up Borel today and gets blinkers for the first time. Give him a slight edge in a wide open field. UNBRIDLDPERFECTION is a first time starter for Asmussen who shows some solid works leading up to his debut. MOUNTAIN TRAIL ran a strong race at first asking at Hoosier and any improvement off that one would make him a contender here.

Race 8
COLLAR looked very sharp winning last time out in her first start over the track. She figures to be hard pressed on the front end today, but a repeat of that effort would make her tough here with Leparoux picking up the mount. FLEET STREAK is the definite class in here. She had a very rough trip behind a slow pace last out at Arlington but should benefit from what figures to be a quick pace today. She is definitely the one to beat.

Race 9: Simulcast from Kentucky Downs

Race 10: The Kentucky Cup Distaff (G3)
BEAR NOW was an impressive winner of this race last year and although she is winless since that start she has been facing some extremely tough company. Her third place finish in the Grade I Madison at Keeneland was an impressive effort and she looks like a good bet to regain her winning ways with Albarado in for the mount. INDESCRIBABLE has also run some of her best races on Polytrack. She hasn't shown much in her recent races but anything close to her best makes her the one to beat with Gomez aboard. WHIRLIE BERTIE is always dangerous if left alone on the front end.

Race 11: Simulcast from Kentucky Downs

Race 12: The Kentucky Cup Sprint (G3)
GUAM TYPHOON drops back into a sprint after a couple of route races at Saratoga. He will be rallying from off of what figures to be a fast pace and rates a slight edge in a well matched renewal of the Kentucky Cup Sprint. BIG PUSH is one of the runners who figures to be vying for the early lead. He is a prefect 3 for 3 on all-weather surfaces and looks dangerous at decent odds. EL BRUJO is an invader from Canada who also likes the Poly. He should get a good trip under Gomez and a win from him would be no big surprise.

Race 13: The Kentucky Cup Classic (G2)
HOLD ME BACK came from far back to win the Lane's End and also rallied to finish second in the Blue Grass and Travers. He figures to get an honest pace in front of him today and will be flying at the end under Leparoux. He seems to be peaking at the right time and should join Hard Spun as the only horse to win the Classic and Lane's End in the same year. DUBIOUS MISS is reunited with his favorite rider, Calvin Borel, who has won all five times he has been aboard. He will be in a stalking position right off the leaders and may be the main opposition for the favorite. WICKED STYLE won the Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity on the Poly at Keeneland and has to be respected.

Race 14: Simulcast from Kentucky Downs

Race 15
CREASTING had a rough trip last out as the favorite. Miguel Mena is slated to ride today and she should be tough to beat in this spot. ALL STAR HEART beat the top pick last out and Borel picks up the mount. She figures to be the main competition. CAT MAGIC is a first timer from the barn of Rusty Arnold with solid works.

Race 16: Simulcast from Kentucky Downs

Bob Baffert's Indian Blessing, the 2-year-old filly champion of 2007 and last year's champion female sprinter, looks for her first victory this year as the 123-pound highweight in today's 6?-furlong Gallant Bloom Handicap at Belmont.

In three starts this year, the 4-year-old daughter of Indian Charlie ran second against colts in the $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen on March 28, fourth at 1-2 in the June 14 Desert Stormer at Hollywood Park and second in the Aug. 29 Ballerina at Saratoga.

"She's back to her old self," Baffert said. "She had some problems with her feet, and we lost time with her. That showed [in the Ballerina] when the serious running started. That day, you saw about eighty percent of Indian Blessing. This time we're hoping you'll see that extra twenty percent."

FIRST RACE: Banker's Buy, 8-1 under Jose Lezcano, was going turf-to-dirt for Nick Zito after getting beaten 16 lengths on the Saratoga turf. Around the turn, Banker's Buy circled field in tandem with Defarge to forge to front mid-stretch, then 5-2 favorite Lemon Punch, going turf-to-dirt for Tom Bush, bulled her way through horses under Kent Desormeaux, pushing aside Vicarious to her inside, to engage Banker's Buy for the lead. Inside the final furlong, Lemon Punch clawed past Banker's Buy to take the lead, but Banker's Buy came on again to prevail in a photo finish.

FIFTH RACE: Former top-class sprinter Songster, 6-1 in third start of his attempted comeback from retirement which began last November, gunned to the front under Edgar Prado, set rapid pace through first half in 44.87 seconds pressed by 4-1 Accredit, with 3-1 Ravalo chasing them outside under John Velazquez. Ravalo, trained in Maryland by Donald Barr, but racing under name of Cleveland Johnson when in New York, forged past Songster mid-stretch, took command and drew clear. Gold Trippi, well of the pace early, finished full of run in tandem with Starforaday and outfinished him by nose for second.

SEVENTH RACE: Going mile-and-sixteenth over Widener turf, bettors had hard time separating Big Al and Unaccountable, sending both off at 2-1 with Unaccountable the slight favorite, and at the wire they were even closer than the betting suggested. Big Al, beaten by a nose vs. similar 35G claiming field on the Saratoga turf, gunned to the front under Mike Luzzi to set pace on daylight lead tracked outside by Unaccountable, who finished neck behind Big Al at Old Spa after winning his two prior starts for Chad Brown. Around far turn, Jose Lezcano sent Unaccountable after Big Al, and those two dueled from the far turn to mid-stretch, when Unaccountable began to edge clear. But then Big Al dug back in along the rail, came on again, and they hit the wire together, with Unaccountable best by a lip. Inquiry sign went up, and head-on replay revealed that Unaccountable brushed with Big Al in final strides, but the contact was negligible and the result stood.

EIGHTH RACE: Maybe Eibar Coa didn't like the water up at the Old Spa, where he won just six races, but he has been riding like a house afire back at Belmont. Going six furlongs on inner turf, he cruised right to the front aboard 8-5 favorite Acquired Cat, set pace chased by 8-5 Karakorum Elektra, Cornelio Velasquez up for Linda Rice. Acquired Cat, winner of two of his previous three starts, all turf sprints, for Dominic Galluscio with Coa riding, cruised along in front, spurted clear top of stretch, was ridden aggressively to hold Karakorum Elektra safe through the stretch. It was Coa's ninth winner in first 11 days of this meet. Rice still looking for her first.

NINTH RACE: Barclay Tagg's Wild Awake, with four seconds and a third in her last five starts, all at short prices, once again proved to be money-burning bridesmaid. When 18-1 Who Is Lady, Mike Luzzi up, inherited lead from 30-1 A Word to the Wise turning for home, Wild Awake, even-money choice under Ramon Dominguez going mile-and-sixteenth on turf, has every chance to run by her from top of stretch home, and simply refused. Wild Awake simply hung by Who Is Lady's side, then Dave Donk's Freedom Rings, 3-1 under John Velazquez, came with an explosive late charge to pass them all late.
