I heard on the radio just a little while ago that our Announcer for Football and Basketball has been hospitalized and is in critical condition! Has anybody else heard this news?

Jim Fyffe

AUBURN--Auburn lead announcer Jim Fyffe passed away from a brain aneurysm Thursday at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery. He was 57. He is survived by his wife, Rose, five children, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. (CT) Friday at Leak Memory Funeral Home in Montgomery. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Montgomery Saturday at 11 a.m. A grave side service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery immediately following the service.

Donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association in the name of Jim Fyffe.

Fyffe spent 22 seasons as the play-by-play announcer for Auburn football and men's basketball games.

"In a very real sense, the voice of Auburn has been silenced," said Auburn athletic director David Housel. "There will be other voices, but no one else will carry the excitement and enthusiasm Jim did. He had a special talent and he used that talent in a special way for the glory of Auburn. As long as people remember what has happened here in the last 20 years, 20 of the best years in Auburn history, they will remember Jim. He will forever more be a very special part of it. I've lost a friend, Auburn has lost a patriot."

A native of Paintsville, Ky., Fyffe was known for his signature call, "TOUCHDOWN AUBURN". He called play-by-play for Auburn's Southeastern Conference championship seasons in 1983, 1987, 1988, 1989 and the Tigers' undefeated season in 1993. He provided the radio call for 15 bowl games and action for such Auburn players as Bo Jackson, Brent Fullwood, Tracy Rocker, Aundray Bruce, Lawyer Tillman, Reggie Slack, Stan White, Takeo Spikes and Rudi Johnson.

"This is a serious loss for the Auburn family and broadcasting industry," said Mike Hubbard, President of the Auburn Network. "Jim was a true professional and really became an icon to Auburn people throughout the country. It was a privilege for those of us at the Auburn Network to have the opportunity to work with him. We will always be thankful we were able to work and be friends with Jim. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. He will be sorely missed."

Some of Fyffe's most memorable football calls included "Bo Over the Top" against Alabama in 1982, "Bye-Bye Bo" against Georgia Tech in 1985, the Lawyer Tillman reverse against Alabama in 1986, "Tillman, Tillman, Tillman" against Georgia Tech in 1987, the Patrick Nix to Frank Sanders play against Alabama in 1993 and the Sanders' catch against top-ranked Florida in 1994.

"We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jim," said head football coach Tommy Tuberville. "He was a good friend, a person that we all enjoyed working with and someone who truly loved Auburn. He really brought a special element to our radio broadcasts and he will always be remembered for his great calls of our games. He touched so many people's lives and he will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Fyffe family and the entire Auburn family during this especially difficult time."

Fyffe was also known for his calls of men's basketball games where he popularized saying hello to a player's hometown after a dunk. He provided play-by-play for such players as Charles Barkley, Chuck and Wesley Person, Chris Morris and Chris Porter.

"First and foremost our thoughts and prayers are with the Fyffe family," said head coach Cliff Ellis. "Jim has been the connection between Auburn basketball and our fans and he brought our best moments into so many people's homes. We had great respect for the work that he did and the pride he had in Auburn. He will be deeply missed. This is a huge loss for the Auburn family."

Fyffe radio highlights of Auburn basketball included calls during the 1999 SEC Championship season, and NCAA Tournament runs in 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1999, 2000 and 2003.

Fyffe, who called games for the Auburn Network, was employed by WACV-AM in Montgomery. He also served as the play-by-play voice for the USFL's Birmingham Stallions and the Columbus Wardogs arena football team.

I don't think I ever heard Jim Fyffe call a game but after listening to this, I think there is reason to think that I have missed out. Enjoy the sounds of Mr. Fyffe.
