NASCAR Picks for Auto Club

by Brian Polking, Monday, March 18, 2013 6:43:34 PM CDTFFToolbox.com

Track Info:
Length: 2.000 miles
Shape: D-shaped Oval
Type: Superspeedway
Location: Fontana, California
View Average Finishes

Just when you think the early obstacles are out of the way, something new comes along to doom a perfectly good afternoon of racing for your fantasy team. Last weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway, a rash of blown tires saddled many big names with bad finishes and even knocked out a few drivers that appeared to be well on their way to top-five finishes. Between the wrecks at Daytona, some early engine issues for various teams and now the Bristol tire issue, a nice normal race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California this weekend would be a welcomed change.
The 2.0-mile oval is a sister track of Michigan International Speedway, and while a wide track surface allows for comfortable side-by-side racing, the high speeds often make clean air and track position the trump card. Not to mention the fact that fuel mileage often becomes the deciding factor because of lack of cautions and extended green flag, which can lead to some tense moments in the closing laps as drivers try to stretch their fuel to the finish. Heck, last year's race even rain shortened. With the way things have gone so far, who knows what to expect Sunday.
1. Kyle Busch, #18 Mars Brands/Interstate Batteries, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Busch is finding his stride just in time to visit Auto Club Speedway where he is a former winner and has finished in the top 10 in 10 of his last 13 starts. More importantly, he has been inching closer to a return to Victory Lane recently. Busch finished third at the track in 2011 and second last year.

2. Kasey Kahne, #5 Farmers Insurance/Quaker State, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

His 14.9 average finish at ACS doesn't do him justice. Kahne is a former winner at the 2.0-mile track, and he has finished in the top 15 in 12 of his 16 starts, including three straight. Throw in the fact that he is probably the hottest driver in the series right now, and he should be in the mix for a win for the third week in a row.

3. Jimmie Johnson, #48 Lowe's/Kobalt Tools, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

In 18 starts in Fontana, Johnson has compiled a series-leading 5.4 average finish and has never finished worse than 16th. More importantly, he has finished third or better at the track 12 times in his career, piling up five wins and five second-place finishes. Anything less than a top-five finish would be a big surprise.

4. Brad Keselowski, #2 Miller Lite, Penske Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Although Keselowski is still looking for his first top-15 finish at ACS, owners should feel free to overlook his 22.8 average finish in four starts at the track. After all, we are talking about a guy that has followed up a championship-winning season with four straight top-five finishes to open 2013. Keselowski is a weekly top-five option until further notice.

5. Carl Edwards, #99 Fastenal/Aflac/UPS/Subway, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Despite having just one win in Fontana in 15 starts, there aren't many drivers that have been more reliable at the track. Edwards has finished seventh or better in 12 of his 15 starts, and his 8.7 average finish is the second best in the series. Owners should consider Edwards a low-risk option this weekend with plenty of upside.

6. Kevin Harvick, #29 Budweiser/Rheem, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Harvick has been dialed in at ACS lately. He has reeled off five straight top-10 finishes and has finished int he top five three times in his last four starts. Harvick won at the track in 2011, and during his five-race hot streak, he has compiled an impressive 4.8 average finish.

7. Matt Kenseth, #20 Husky/Dollar General, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class A]

From 2005 to 2009, Kenseth reeled off eight straight finishes of seventh or better at ACS. He has been a little up and down in recent starts, but he remains one of the top options at the track. His 10.3 average finish in the last 20 races is the third best in the series, and Kenseth has tallied three wins in Fontana since the start of the 2006 season.

8. Clint Bowyer, #15 5-Hour Energy, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Bowyer offers that coveted combination of reliability and upside this weekend. In 12 starts at ACS, he has compiled a 10.8 average finish and has yet to finish outside the top 20. Meanwhile, he has finished in the top 10 four times in his last five starts at the track, including a second-place run in 2010.

9. Tony Stewart, #14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1, Stewart-Haas Racing [Yahoo Class A]

His slow start isn't out of the ordinary, and while he normally does his best work from the summer months on, "Smoke" could make an exception this weekend. After all, he is the defending winner of Sunday's race and has won two of the last three races at the track. In fact, Stewart has finished in the top 10 in five of his last six starts at Fontana, so he should help out fantasy owners even if he doesn't win.

10. Dale Earnhardt, Jr., #88 National Guard/Diet Mountain Dew, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]

Although his overall numbers at ACS aren't pretty, Junior could be a steal this weekend. For starters, he has opened the 2013 season with four straight top-10s. He also finished third in Fontana last season. Junior appears headed in the right direction and should keep the top-10 finishes coming.

11. Greg Biffle, #16 3M/Bondo, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class B]

The 2.0-mile tracks have always been some of his best, and Biffle has one win and two second-place finishes among his accomplishments at Auto Club Speedway. Recently, he has finished 11th or better in three of his last four starts at the track, including a sixth-place run last year. Granted, Biffle hasn't made a serious push for a win in Fontana in a few years, but he has remained a steady performer and useful fantasy option.

12. Denny Hamlin, #11 FedEx, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Hamlin has a pair of victories at the other 2.0-mile track on the schedule, but he hasn't quite had the same success at ACS that he has at Michigan. In 12 starts in Fontana, he has finished 12th or better seven times, but he also has five finishes outside the top 15 and four outside the top 25. Hamlin also has just a single top-five finish at ACS, so he doesn't quite have the upside that he does most weeks.

NASCAR Picks for Auto Club

by Brian Polking, Monday, March 18, 2013 6:43:34 PM CDTFFToolbox.com
https://twitter.com/intent/user?screen_name=BPolking
13. Jeff Gordon, #24 Drive to End Hunger/Axalta, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

Since finishing second in both races at ACS in 2009, Gordon has had modest results at the track. He has finished outside the top 15 in three of his last four starts in Fontana, compiling an 18.3 average finish. Gordon is more than capable of a solid showing, but don't be surprised if he underwhelms just a bit.

14. Ryan Newman, #39 Quicken Loans/Haas Automation, Stewart-Haas Racing [Yahoo Class B]

He has just a 17.6 average finish at Auto Club Speedway for his career, but Newman has been in a groove lately. He has ripped off three straight finishes of seventh or better at the track, logging a pair of top-five finishes during the stretch. Given his recent hot stretch in Fontana, Newman has plenty of potential this weekend, especially as a B-List option in Yahoo! leagues.

15. Kurt Busch, #78 Furniture Row, Furniture Row Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Busch has always run well in Fontana, compiling a 12.7 average finish in 19 starts and winning a race at the track. More importantly, he managed a top-10 at ACS last year while driving for Phoenix Racing. Busch is fresh off a strong top-five run at Bristol, and he could keep the momentum going this weekend at one of his better tracks. Owners should consider him a solid sleeper pick.

16. Mark Martin, #55 Aaron's Dream Machine, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class B]

The veteran has three finishes of sixth or better in his last five starts at ACS, but he has finished 20th and 12th in his last two outings a the track. His recent numbers are probably a better indicator of what to expect Sunday, and while Martin could sneak into the top 10, a top-15 run is a more reasonable expectation.

17. Martin Truex, Jr., #56 NAPA Auto Parts, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class B]

On one hand, Truex has a 20.1 average finish at ACS and has finished outside the top 15 in eight of his 12 starts at the track. On the plus side, one of his three top-10s at the track came just last season when he finished eighth. Still, fantasy owners may want to make him prove that last year's run wasn't a fluke given his overall lack of success in Fontana.

18. Paul Menard, #27 Menards, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Menard is off to a solid start, and it could continue this weekend at a track where he has been improving lately. He has finished in the top 20 in three of his last four starts at ACS, including two straight. Expect more of the same this weekend, making Menard a solid option to round out fantasy rosters in most formats.

19. Ricky Stenhouse Jr., #17 Best Buy/Valvoline/Zest, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class C]

The rookie is quickly establishing himself as a reliable fantasy option, opening 2013 with four finishes of 18th or better. He should be a safe bet for a top-20 finish this weekend, and he could even be in line for a career day considering the success Roush Fenway Racing has had at Auto Club Speedway over the years. Owners should have Stenhouse on the short list of strong sleeper options.

20. A.J. Allmendinger, #51 Phoenix Racing, Phoenix Racing [Yahoo Class C]

He looks like a completely different driver than he did with Phoenix Racing at the end of 2012, and with finishes of 11th and 13th in his two starts this season, Allmendinger is reestablishing his fantasy value. With back-to-back top-15 finishes at ACS, another useful effort could be on tap for Sunday.

21. Joey Logano, #22 Shell-Pennzoil, Penske Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Logano's numbers haven't been terrible this year, but they haven't been overly impressive either. The same can be said about his numbers at ACS, where he has three top-15s and three finishes outside the top 20 in six starts. Logano could have a respectable showing this weekend, but he is more likely to hurt lineups than he is to be a difference maker.

22. Jamie McMurray, #1 McDonald's/Cessna, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing [Yahoo Class B]

After opening his Cup career with five top-10s in his first six starts at ACS, McMurray has gone 12 starts without even cracking the top 15. At this point, it seems unlikely he will ever recapture his early form, severely limiting his upside as a fantasy option. A top-20 is probably the best you will get out of him in Fontana.

23. Aric Almirola, #43 Smithfield Foods, Richard Petty Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]

Sunday's race will be a good measuring stick for Almirola. In five starts at ACS, he has compiled a dismal 32.8 average finish and has never finished better than 25th. I wouldn't be surprised to see him best that result this weekend, but a wait-and-see approach is definitely recommended.

24. Jeff Burton, #31 Caterpillar/Cheerios, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Since leaving Roush Fenway Racing, Burton's numbers at ACS have suffered. He has just a single top-10 finish in his last eight starts at the track, and he has finished outside the top 15 five times during the stretch. Owners are basically taking a shot in the dark by trusting Burton

25. Juan Montoya, #42 Target, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Although he has finished in the top 20 in his last three starts at ACS, Montoya is anything but a safe pick. He has a 19.1 average finish at the track for his career, and he is off to another unspectacular start this season. The potential reward is rarely worth the risk with Montoya.

26. Marcos Ambrose, #9 Stanley/Dewalt Power Tools, Richard Petty Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]

I'll be the first to admit that I believe Ambrose is more than just a road course ace, but he flat out struggles at ACS. He has a 27.7 average finish in seven starts at the 2.0-mile oval, and he has yet to crack the top 20. There is no need to make room for him on fantasy rosters this weekend.

27. Casey Mears, #13 GEICO, Germain Racing [Yahoo Class C]

I'll eat a little crow on Mears and admit that I wrote him off after a 2012 season that saw him pile up 11 DNFs. Apparently, the equipment issues that plagued him last year have been corrected for now, and he has two top-15s in the first four races of 2013. Mears is racing his way into the upper echelon of C-List options in Yahoo! leagues.

28. David Reutimann, #83 Burger King/Doctor Pepper, BK Racing [Yahoo Class C]

It has been a while since Reutimann cracked the radar of fantasy owners, but he is a potential longshot this weekend depending on the format. After all, he has finished in the top 20 in six of his last seven starts at ACS. Even last year, he managed to crack the top 30. Reutimann's equipment is a little better in 2013, which could result in a top-25 run Sunday.

29. David Ragan, #34 CSX Transportation/Peanut Patch, Front Row Motorsports [Yahoo Class C]

Ragan was a consistent top-20 driver at ACS when he was with Roush Fenway Racing, but he finished outside the top 30 last year in his first start with Front Row Motorsports. Well, he finally got on track last weekend at Bristol after a horrible start to 2013, and a little improvement is reasonable in his second start in Fontana with his new team. Look for Ragan to sneak into the top 30.

30. David Stremme, #30 Swan Energy/Nutrition 53, Swan Racing [Yahoo Class C]

He has finished in the top 20 at ACS as recently as 2009, but the equipment Stremme has at his disposal has changed dramatically since then. He cracks the top 30 in this week's rankings thanks in large part to his respectable top-20 effort at Bristol last weekend, but on a routine basis, top-30 finishes are his ceiling.
