- - As I've said in my first post of the year for the last two seasons, "the bad beats are maybe 1/3 as annoying as the flat out wrong and I must have been an idiot plays." I've done OK this year in both ATS outcomes that have been decided in the final minutes of the game, and avoiding the DOA clunkers, but I should still be a few units better for the season but for some hesitancy in adding one or two or three more plays per week that would have done just fine. But it could also be a few units worse, too.

Virginia Tech(-10) over Maryland (1*)
- - From the class of the favorite, to the urgency and sharpness of the host, to creating turnovers and big plays on a big stage, I see the hurt and the tide in this game in an entirely different vein than Virginia hosting No. 4 Florida State (a game in which I didn't even settle on a lean toward either team).
"I think we believe in ourselves. I think that confidence is really something we're really picking up on a little bit. ~ Maryland QB Sam Hollenbach

Alabama(-4)(-105) over Tennessee (1*)
- - I believe Alabama playing its best in its biggest games (Florida and at South Carolina) and with games on the line reflects an awfully good and complete team that has yet to be elevated to anything special in 49 of the 50 states. There is nothing freakin' special about this defensive minded Tennessee team with the QB carousel. I see no flashing red lights and no alarming yellow ones that are out of whack with the table that is set this week. This Tide team has this Tennesse team in the crosshairs - or vice versa - for Bama's biggest game so far in the new millennium. I'll lay the points.

Here's to praying the picks aren't as lame as the write ups . . .

Northwestern(+13) over Michigan State (1*)
- - This Northwestern team has shown loads of character, while the Spartans are once again a cocky bunch that handle neither success nor adversity with much distinction. Spread the field, score lots of points, and play like you believe in the 4th quarter, and carry 13 points in your pocket to close the gap.

Iowa(-3) over Michigan (1*)
- - Iowa has earned my money in this late October spot, and I expect they will earn the happy sideline moments when this one is over.

Ohio(-7) over Ball State (1*)
- - gman2 is driving this bus; I took a look, liked the view (again), and climbed aboard.

Indiana(+16) over Ohio State (1*)
- - I'm still giving kudos to HC Terry Hoeppner for fashioning a team and a season on the verge of some distinction. It helps today that OL is one of the Hoosiers strengths.

Rutgers(-3) over Connecticut (1*)
- - This line is about 9 points from what I would have expected a month ago, and I would have been leaning to Connecticut . . . I've done well picking my spots with and against both these teams for several years, and now I have to like the opportunity Rutgers has for a huge win here.

TCU(+1) over Air Force (1*)
- - I'm sure plenty of sharp players are going to back the home team in this spot, but more than a few will continue backing the no nonsense team that's thrived on the road, stopping the run, valuing the football, and finding ways to win.
