New to the board but searched through the forums and found great information.

A question I have though deals with bankroll and money management. As a percentage I've been wagering between 0.5% and 1.0% of my bankroll depending on how strong I fell about that particular game. Is this reasonable? I've heard that it is ok to go as high as 3%-4% if you have a good feeling about your analysis.

Welcome to the board!

All I'd suggest is that you be consistent. If you're going to play 1%, stay within a % point of that on all plays. If you're going to go to 3% or 4%, stay in that range. I wouldn't however make some plays for 0.5% and others for 5%. It really makes no sense doing this; your little plays are rendered almost meaningless.

Personally, I play 3% on almost all plays. Maybe one play in 25 I go 1.5x the norm, or 4.5%. And the 3% is of my original bankroll, until I have increased my roll by 50%, at which point I use 3% of the new figure. (Some people will bet 3% on their current bankroll at any given time - constantly adjusting bet size...but I find if I adjust it upwards after every good weekend, with the way wins tend to come in bunches if I do that I will often hand back too much on the downturn). With the number of bets I make, and my historical win %, my goal is to be able to make that adjustment for 50% gain around Week 9 or 10...and hopefully have doubled my original roll by season's end. (I say "hopefully"...I don't usually meet those goals...but I hope to!) :)

Anyways, going to 3-4% ~shouldn't~ put you at too much more risk. I wouldn't go much higher than that though. The other rule I use is to never have more than 30% of my bankroll "in play" at any given time.

GM,

Thanks for the welcome and thanks for your reply.

I see one area where I have been making mistakes and that is using my daily bankroll when applying my percentages. I've been doing exactly what you said, "constantly adjusting my bet sizes". I need to apply a consistent # to all of my plays until, I reach a predetermined level (hopefully higher than where I started). Therefore, take today's bankroll amount and apply my percentages to that amount for about a month or two, instead of recalculating everyday.
