It was intended to her portray her as an ordinary mom, keen to make savings for her family.

But Michelle Obama's casual slip-out trip to Target is being met with scepticism, as media personalities deride the ?incognito? visit as a well-timed PR stunt.

Only last month the First Lady was accused of indulging in luxury holidays worth $10million dollars on the tax payers? dime.

And barely a week ago, the 47-year-old mother-of-two was criticised for wearing $40,000 diamonds to a fund-raising event.

But with Obama?s domestic popularity at one of its lowest ebbs, she seems determined to her fight her husband's re-election battle by her self-proclaimed campaign wife motto of ?Do no harm'.

Showing the world that she really can do recession chic, Mrs Obama headed to a Target store in Alexandria, Virginia, on Thursday afternoon.

Secret Service officers reportedly swept the store on Highway 1, 30 minutes before Mrs Obama popped in for her housewives' essentials- dog food and cleaning products.

WASHINGTON: An incognito Michelle Obama slipped out of the White House to shop at a Target store in a Virginia suburb of Washington, wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses in an attempt to avoid attention.
But America's first lady was recognised by an Associated Press photographer who was in the store in Alexandria, eight kilometres south of the White House, when she arrived on Thursday.
Mrs Obama, who has previously admitted to missing the freedom to go shopping, was tailed by casually dressed secret service agents as she pushed a shopping trolley through the store.

Her office confirmed that Mrs Obama had ducked out on a ''routine errand'', adding: ''It is not uncommon for the first lady to slip out to run an errand, eat at a local restaurant or otherwise enjoy the city outside the White House gates.''
Media descended on the store to inquire into the visit, with the local Target manager, Maria Panagopulof, telling CNN: ''We didn't realise truly what was happening until she had almost left. The cashier recognised her, but she was very unassuming.''
Mrs Obama has talked of missing her anonymity since her husband's election in 2008. At a White House function in April, she said: ''Before we lived here, we were normal people. I had a job. I drove my own car. I took my kids to school every day. I went to Target and shopped for my groceries.''
The following month, on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Mrs Obama said: ''I think one of the greatest sacrifices for people like us - who like being with people - is that it's the bubble,'' she said. ''We talked about it. I can't go to Target and walk around. I guess I could, but it would mess up everyone else's shopping experience.''
