it's one thing to give up a 2 run ninth like texas did today to tie the game, but in the tenth they have soriano on second with no outs. why have hidalgo swing the bat instead of trying to sacrifice runner to third? as it was he strikes out and then blalock walks and the next guy hits into double play. should you not play to move him to third with no outs?

Similar situation in the Twins game. Bottom of the eighth, tie game. Twins lead-off hitter gets a base hit (Stewart). Gardenhire does not have Mauer bunt, and, of course, he hits into a DP. Why wouldn't you bunt there with your third and fourth hitters coming up.

Then in the bottom of the ninth, still tied, lead-off hitter gets on (Hunter) and he has Jacque Jones bunt. The sacrifice works, but now instead of 3 and 4 coming up, you have Cuddyer and a rookie without even 10 major league at-bats. Seems like he should have let Jones hit there.

Oh, well. Sometimes you wonder how these managers got to be where they are! :)

In a ditch !!!!!
i would always sac. bunt but if my #3 or 4 hitters are up at bat , i would let them swing away. thats why they get the big bucks. on the other hand if there friggen o'fer today i would have to think twice aobut it. 0-6 nice :cursin:

He should have bunted, but Hidalgo was at the plate. He is typically a middle of the order hitter.

I had a coach who would constantly say, "I will put you in a position to succeed with the abilities that god has given you." Hidalgo most likely hasn't bunted in quite a few seasons and the odds of him being successful were slim. He ended up having a 10 pitch at bat. Just as you wouldn't ask a big man to take the game winning 3 in hoops, you shouldn't expect a power hitter to be able to bunt.

Should they be able to? That is a completely different argument. It comes down to spring training and insisting that all hitters be able to move a runner over.

he did foul off several pitches but then swung at a very low pitch that would have been called a ball

The monster bats in the Cardinal lineup have been asked to bunt, and they have succeeded.

I don't want to hear how Maur or anyone playing the game can't, won't, or shouldn't be able to execute that part of the game so their TEAM'S chances of winning improve.

this is a 100% bunt situation in my opinion, managers are simply afraid to give the bunt sign to their stars. When you bunt, here is what happens 95 % of the time.

If you get the bunt down, the next hitter will be walked to set up a double play, it puts more pressure on the pitcher to throw strikes, he doesn't want to walk a run in or load the bases, though a pitcher with good command can decide which of the next two hitters he wants to face. Always play for 1 run late in games, not the big inning. Drives me nuts when the manager can't make the correct decisions. Being a Cubs fan, I see qustionable decisions nearly every night. don't get me wrong, Dusty's teams win games, but he leaves a lot to be desired with his in-game managing.

Have to agree with you Slick. As an old schooler, I couldn't be more amazed year after year at the total inability of many major leaguers to bunt. You can see it several times every day and I still shake my head every time.
