Strike date likely coming on July 8th
From News Services
Published Jun 23, 2002

The executive board of baseball's players' association will meet July 8 in Milwaukee, the day before the All-Star Game, and is likely to name a strike date. To hear one of the senior player-representatives tell it, that strike date is not likely to be postponed to next season, as some have speculated.

"If we wait until the offseason or next year, [the owners] are going to get all their money. It takes away all our leverage," Diamondbacks pitcher Rick Helling said. "They're going to get all their gates from the season, and all their postseason television money. It defeats the purpose. That's the only reason we would strike during the season this year: To force them, by putting a financial burden on them, to negotiate."

If the strike date is postponed, "Not only are they going to have all their money," Helling said, "but there will be even less incentive for them to negotiate.

Helling, though he moved to the National League over the winter, remains the American League representative, since he is serving the second year of a two-year term that he began last season while with the Texas Rangers.

like i said before i really don't think they will walk out, inless they are really forced to and the date is set just to plant a seed. now if they owners dick around and act like its a joke and not move Togther for an agreement then yhey might but it would be the players last choice.

also like i said if the owners would just sign the paper the players ask them to,the one that states player would play the whole year if owners would say they willnot lock at at the end of oct and both sides would work till deal is done and must be done before spring training. if this was done you wouldnot be hearing any of this,it's not even asking for anything except not to be locked out and players give on their part by playing.

so whats the big deal with that?why won't the owners sign it? its because without a lock out they can't break the younger way less profitable players in the union. the owners think they can replace players from the show with guys who need the money and will be of the same talent. well if you belive that one you are a fool and the product wouldnot be the same, say what you want but its a proven fact baseball is the most skill orient game to master, and also has been many studies that have proven and most all people in any sport as well as writters and experts in the field of sports research have said and proven that hitting a baseball is the single hardest feat in sports to master. read up on studies will give you a quick break down. a fb of just 85 which is a below avg college fb you have 0.35 secs on avg to see the pitch come out of pitchers hand decide if its a ball or stike as well as decide to swing or take, then put the whole process together and make contact with it. for those who donot belive that go to a place that has a pitching machine and cages and walk up to one that is cranked up to 85 which will be hard to find because avg person willnot even touch a ball but ask the highest is 80 most times and see how many out of 10 you touch i would say 3-4 will go by without you even moving bat and that is on a pitch that is flat without movement.

owners would be fooling themselves if they think they can replace mlb players. yes they can cut money but no fan will go to baseball or not many fans and pay the price that won't change to see far less talent for same money. hell look at mont and fl fans don't even go there,fl would be different with knew field that is fan friendley for baseball because j.robbie/proplayer sucks for baseball both playing and as a fan and have done both.

owner want to bust union someday the people will see that, plain and simple this is their number 1 goal. they will say lots of things and throw in all sort of bs to tangle words and progress to get what they want total control of baseball by a small groupe of people that have hardley played the game and could give a shit about you as fans. they care about how much profit they can make at no cost . also stated before if they are losing money every year like some cry about why don't they sell, there are many people in line to buy that have the funds? its because you can make anythink look how you want on paper. these guys didnot get rich as hell by being stupid they are shrude businessmen and have all the people around them who can make the book say what ever suites there needs.

long winded rant but still some one give me some logic why the owners won't agree to the little 1 page paper that says play ball,no lockout and will work together? because they have all the money.

If they walk this time, it could really be the end to baseball as we know it. I lost a great deal of interest the last time these overpaid players walked , this time it could be the last curtain for me.

fuhk em! let em walk! i'm tired of their bullshit bribes. fuhk the owners too!

they're ALL gonna lose over this mess and i *won't* come back if there's a strike this time. i'm also *sure* i'm not the only fan that thinks this way either.

i'm just sick and tired of the whole thing.

greed, greed, greed on BOTH sides of this.

the FANS are the ones that should be walking out!!!!!

jack hit the nail on the head and the players know that, and so do the owners but they really don't care they have other businessies that make them tons of money, the player on the other hand or most would be forced to find other work with far less pay.

yes this would kill baseball, fans spend to much money anyway for what they get. love my sport always will but if you want to have a great time and a great price and more fun go check out a game in the minors if you have a team around you it is the best imo. can eat drink and take family for less thenalmost 3/4 of what you would pay at the mlb games.

I am torn, on one hand since I am to stupid to follow cappers like kcwolf or fletch blind I am floundering bettingwise and my rotisserie team is an abysmal 9th. On the other hand, as a Dodger fan this is the most together team I have seen since 1988 and don't want to be robbed of what might happen.
If there is a lengthy strike, I feel it will take much long to recover from then 1994. Hopefully it won't happen but we will see.

If the players and the owners collectively have one SHRED of intelligence, they'll get something worked out. Otherwise the mega-dollars these greedy babies are fighting over are mysteriously going to end up being one hell of a lot less (just watch future attendance figures shrink like crazy). The real problem I have with all this chit is that if either side had any of these "major issues" say....in March....when the season was just about to get underway, why not strike THEN, if you must??? These supposed issues didn't just "pop up" did they??? Don't these idiots realize how stupid it looks (and how little credibility they have) to start a season and pretend everything is hunky-dory (which if they had any concept of REALITY they'd be eternally greatful even for the CHANCE to make that type of living doing a "job" like playing Major League baseball), then come back in the middle of the freekin year and announce that you have all these problems blah blah blah....bottom line is you're greedy as hell and look around guys....most of us fans ARE TIRED OF IT!!!!

Before I close this, somebody answer me this: There is quite a bit of dough being tossed around in football, basketball and hockey, too, right? So why do they struggle soooooo much less, or so it seems, with their labor issues. I almost NEVER hear about any other sports threatening to strike. Every once in a blue moon is about it. Maybe it's because the players in those sports understand that they are LUCKY to do that type of "work" and make that type of living??? YEAH....I THINK SO!!!!! And obviously the owners either aren't as greedy or as stupid. Without players on the field they know they won't be making crap! Pretty amazing, huh baseball

Fletch:

You appear to have an inside track on what the player's motives and tru intentions are. So, I would really like to know why in the hell the PLAYERS will not submit to steroid testing? I've heard some pretty lame excuses from the player's side, but to me, this SHOULD NOT even be an issue. I've heard a lot of pathetic excuses, but the player's excuses over this matter is at the top of the MOST PATHETIC! I truly don't even think they should have a right to refuse the drug testing!! If no PEE, then they should take a permanent LEAVE! I own a business, and if I enacted a drug testing policy and had a few people that refused, well they'd find themselves out of a job! If I'm not mistaken, the Owners own these teams, and the player's are simply their employees. If the owners want the testing and they refuse, then they should start looking for other work. They should be held to the same standards as most other professional athletes.

the reason they won't do it now is because over half are dirty, and it could be held against them in forgive the spelling i know i will buter this and to lazy to look it up , their moral turptatudie clause which could cost them cash, but like i said when they make it part of the talks give them to spring traing to clean up then pass the testing and i don't see it being a problem at all, because there is a written policy then and its not breaking any rights.

first of all it is a drug also that isnot legal so when they give them the time to clean up they will have no choice, they just don't want their names mixed with drugs which jucie is. so till they give them clean time it won't fly. but this should not cause much flack with the 6 months to get clean. then if they don't pass or refuse to take test they will be fined and will probley have a 3 strike rule. testing needs to be done but you can't test with that many guys on it without giving them their chance to get clean. ands its only fare they do this because baseball has turned their heads so long towards the use of jucie. so thats the big deal they would have many dirty guys and its not fair to test till they have chance to get clean and have it held against them because both sides have shut eyes to the abuse of it. now it needs to be put into place but in a fair way. and once in place they need to stick to it,also you have dr's giving it to them not like they are buying it on the black market. if you want it,its there right from your team along with lasix to get rid of the water and potassuim which the dr keep a tight eye on or you would have guys who's hearts we be blowing like a car with out oil.

I quit attending baseball after the last strike and I'll never go back. Problem is, there are too many bozos who will return regardless and the owners/players know this.

Is baseball a sport? not really, in the NFL you can be in a small market and still with good management put a good team on the field.

what is exciting about the Yankees in the World Series every year. the odd time a small market team will do well like the twins this year, but as a fan can you enjoy it. The league would like to move or get rid of the twins. Why support a team when the league does not want it to exist.

it is not a sport if most teams in the league at the start of the season have no shot at winning and no chance of improving their team. comes come down to a half dozen teams and thats about it. let them strike who cares until they have a model similar to the NFL. NHL is quickly going down the same path.

thanks

I agree I don't think there will be a strike. And if there is one I also think the fans should strike. As it is now fans in some cities are not coming to games. There are thousands of seats empty at some stadiums.I think ,with the way the economy is with some people losing jobs, fans are not sympathetic with the players & owners arguing about how to divide the expected revenues for this year.I read that the revenues may exceed $3 billion & the average salary for a major league ballplayer is about $2.5 million.A strike would simply damage the game beyond repair.

i think that the fan should strike the games now, by not going to the games
or by not watching the games on tv. funk
them like jack say, all the money that they made it a joke, the players should go do concrete for one day lol , i guess they have it bad lol

i'm not saying other people don't work hard.... but it seems like athletes are under a much different scrutiny for their salaries as compared to hollywood actors, tv stars, business tycoons, etc.
