Teacher and pupil approach Monday night from similar difficult circumstances: the Bears at 2-5, the San Diego Chargers standing 2-6, losing four straight. Coach John Fox and Chargers coach Mike McCoy, who was on Fox?s staffs in Carolina and Denver, share a common contributing factor, that of coaching injury riddled teams.

McCoy saw 12 different players come out of last Sunday?s San Diego loss to Baltimore, capping an injury run that quarterback Philip Rivers described as ?just crazy.? That has included wide receiver Keenan Allen, on pace for one of the best pass-catching seasons in Chargers history, now done with a kidney injury.

The Bears won?t have wideout Eddie Royal (knee) and will have had Royal and Alshon Jeffery active for the same game just three times in eight games. They lost their projected field-stretcher Kevin White before even training camp started when the rookie suffered a stress fracture to his lower right leg. They will be starting their fifth different offensive line in the span of eight games on Monday night.

The Bears were in position to win each of the last four games, escaping with wins over Oakland and Kansas City but losing the division games to Detroit in overtime and Minnesota on a last-second Vikings field goal. The Chargers are just 2-2 at home, with their only wins coming over Detroit (1-7) and Cleveland (2-6). They?ve lost their last four straight, by four, seven, eight and three points.

Neither team is likely to pull far away from the other (San Diego amasses huge yardage but without points to show for it.

KEEP THE ?TEAMS? CLEAN

It?s not surprising the two ?cleanest? games the Bears have played on special teams has resulted in both of their wins. The four losses have included at least one area of catastrophe. Once-talented return man Jacoby Jones was cut loose. Allen also contributed in that department, so San Diego likely turns to 2014 undrafted free agent Javontee Herndon. The Chargers? four return and coverage teams rank between 22nd and 30th. Before Bears coordinator Jeff Rodgers? beard gets any more gray, all on those units must get on the ?How To? page, go over it together, and stay on it.

GET ?HOME? & MAYBE FLY HOME HAPPY

The Chargers will be without two starting offensive linemen (left tackle King Dunlap and center Chris Watt) and probably a third (left guard Orlando Franklin). Rivers is stationary. And he?ll be throwing a lot. It might not be a bad time for the defense to add to the season sack total of just 12. Pernell McPhee and Jarvis Jenkins account for 8.5 of those. Vic Fangio promised a week and a half ago that interceptions for the secondary would eventually come, and Kyle Fuller provided a pick while Antrel Rolle should?ve had a second. Fangio predicted this week the sacks will start coming. Let?s see if he?s right on that, even if he wasn?t on his Cubs World Series prediction.

******

San Diego is one of four teams in the top 10 in passing yardage per game that are also mired in mediocrity or worse when it comes to getting into the end zone. All are losing teams:

Team Passing Scoring Record
San Diego 1st 14th 2-6
Houston 6th 19th 3-5
Detroit 8th 30th 1-7
Cleveland 9th 25th 2-6
The answer is not as simple as assuming that losing teams pass more because they are so often behind. Passing-yardage teams New England (2), Arizona (4) and Cincinnati (7) are a combined 21-2 and lead their respective divisions.

No, the Chargers? problems lie elsewhere.

Chicago Bears Injury Report Week 9

The Chicago Bears are set to battle the San Diego Chargers on Monday Night Football. The Bears have been plagued by injuries all year-long and as they approach the midpoint of the season things have gotten worse. Running back Matt Forte has been ruled out and for a team that is already struggling this is a huge blow. Forte not being in the game makes it much harder for the Bears offense not just in the running game but also in passing. Linebacker Pernell McPhee is questionable but hopefully for the defense he will be able to play because without a pass rush Phillip River will have a big night. Although, the Chargers have a 2-6 record this season they will still come ready to battle. Rivers is more than capable of putting up big numbers and leading his team to a win, with the help of future Hall of Fame tight end Antonio Gates.

Nothing in this game screams over for me. For as bad as they are the Bears D has been playing ok.

Under 49.5 for me. I'm usually wrong about these things but I could be right

"the bunker"
the bears are missing some top guys tonight(and they don`t have that many to begin with)..but so are the chargers..........

that said,I think that given the mess the team was last year and basically having to retool the entire clusterfuck,,fox seems to have an undermanned group trying hard....

I think the fox hiring was a smart move for the bears and although it may take a few years to straighten out, he`ll right that ship eventually(unless the front office is f-cked up beyond repair).....

the ravens are in a similar state..but they haven`t quit,either...I like the chargers at home to eventually win, but, they don`t appear to have much want to.....the bears are trying hard...

looking forward to watching mich st rookie rb Langford against a do-able chargers front 7...and hoping that pernell McPhee is well enough to play...he`ll help the bears turn the corner eventually..solid player...

wtf is wrong with Melvin Gordon?...he looks like ray rice circa 2013...

Bears need to waste clock like they did with Packers week 1.

Giving Rivers the ball over and over isn't going to help them win
