Alan Faneca is a free man. That means general managers are free to talk about him. General managers like the Bears' Jerry Angelo.

"Who would not consider Alan Faneca if you had a need at the offensive line?" Angelo asked Saturday.

Considering and making a contract offer are two different things, but the Bears would make a logical fit for him. Chicago would be wise to keep the failed Orlando Pace signing in mind when considering it.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin indicated on ESPN the team wasn't interested in bringing Faneca back to Pittsburgh. Faneca's former coaches Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm would make logical suitors.

===============

Jerry Angelo did not come right out and say the Bears will consider nine-time Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca, but he acknowledged that any team in need of help on its offensive line would probably do so.

"Don't know that," Angelo said when asked if the Bears would pursue Faneca after the New York Jets released him earlier today. "Who would not consider Alan Faneca if you had a need at the offensive line?"

The Bears have reshaped their offensive line somewhat this offseason, moving Frank Omiyale from left guard to right tackle where he will compete with experienced veteran Kevin Shaffer for the starting job. That leaves Josh Beekman, who has 20 career starts, at the head of a group at left guards along with Lance Louis and Johan Asiata.

Once again, the Bears waited until the seventh round to address the offensive line in the draft, choosing J'Marcus Webb from West Texas A&M as a developmental tackle. Angelo has drafted 11 linemen in nine drafts with the Bears and six have come in the seventh round.

So, the question is whether or not the Bears will pursue Faneca? He's on the downside of what is likely a Hall of Fame career. The Bears need to determine if he's got gas left in the tank like Ruben Brown did when he was signed in 2004 or if he's on his last legs like Orlando Pace.

"Again, we'll look into some things like we did before the draft," Angelo said. "We looked into Rob Sims. We looked into a couple other guys and it didn't work out. We'll continue to look. We do like the players that we have there. I think coach (offensive line coach Mike) Tice has said that, if he's not said it publicly, he certainly has told him in our meetings that he is comfortable with our line. But again, we'll continue to look."

Angelo did not rule out that the Bears will also consider signing a veteran quarterback, even after selecting Dan LeFevour in the sixth round.

Stay tuned.

Screw the Jets..i've been watching them for over 45 years....

They are a nickle and dime organization trying to rip their fans off.

They can't sell their tickets and they are going to eat them. They want licensing fees sort of you are owning a co-op seat and the game tickets are your maintenance rent.

Their games may get blacked out in new york. Giants too.
Upper Deck Stratosphere seats don't have a PSL fee.

They had their chance to build the stadium in Manhattan but wound up building it in the same dump at The Meadowlands.

New Yorkers should sue them for using the name New York..They are in New Jersey.
:sadwave: :sadwave: :sadwave:

So now the are cutting payroll.

I immediately considered the Vikings to be a great fit for bringing this guy on board. I personally don't see how the Vikes OL is that stable and deep, and NOW is the time to make their run. Seems to be a great idea, to me.

The odds of the Bears signing free agent guard Alan Faneca seem increasingly remote.

While Jerry Angelo has had conversations with Faneca's representative, he has not been among the GMs that have expressed the most interest, according to a knowledgeable source.

Fanaca, 33, was released by the Jets on Saturday after the team drafted UMass offensive lineman Vladimir Ducasse.

The Bears signed veteran tackle Orlando Pace last offseason hoping he had a year or two left. He didn't, which was obvious early in the exhibition season. Faneca's play has also declined, but not the extent that Pace's did. The nine-time Pro Bowler remains a solid player, and will help whichever team picks him up.

Unless something changes, it won't be the Bears.

rumor has it the bears will acquire safety chris harris back from carolina and from what i've heard it's for linebacker jamar williams.

with everybody excited about the draft, i'm not sure how the bears havent had one of the better offseasons

julius peppers
chester taylor
brandon manumanueula
chris harris (for jamar williams their 5th or 6th linebacker)
mike tice (where he excels at o-line)

and most importantly

mike martz (who replaces ron turner)

add in a pretty decent draft for a team without a 1 + 2 and they might have the best incoming group of players over last year.

those were 2 amazing years he had

even though i was at the super bowl and that opening kick return was amazing and the place went nuts.....my favorite by far was the return vs arizona that year to finish of the amazing comeback from down 23-0.

he's lost a little since being moved to a full-time returner but supposedly is ready to commit to full-time punt returns this year with a slightly reduced role as a wr......hope he's back to being a game changer on special teams

ESPN is reporting that veteran OG Alan Faneca(notes) has agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Cardinals. After being released by the Jets last weekend, the six-time Pro Bowler will be reunited with Russ Grimm, the Cardinals? assistant head coach and offensive line coach. Grimm coached Faneca with the Steelers after Faneca was drafted in 1998. Faneca has played in 190 career games. He won one Super Bowl ring with the Steelers in 10 seasons with the team and spent the last two years with the Jets.

Faneca immediately becomes a serious contender for a starting job at one of the Cardinals? guard spots. On the left side, incumbent starter Reggie Wells is coming off what turned out to be a supbar 2009 campaign. Entering training camp, it had been assumed Rex Hadnot(notes), another newly-acquired veteran offensive lineman by the Cardinals this offseason, could push Wells hard for the starting job.

On the right side, Deuce Lutui is coming off his best season. But he has yet to sign his restricted free-agent tender and has irritated Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt by staying away from the team?s ongoing offseason strength and conditioning program. The Cardinals would much prefer to be monitoring the condition of Lutui, who is prone to weight issues.

Eveybody is so positive about their teams during the offseason only to find that teams / players can't change their habits once the games start.

good!

i'll take the average years of

peppers (dd sacks)
taylor (split carries, tons of catches and pass protection)
manumanuela (run and pass blocking)
chris harris (turnovers created galore)

none of those guys needs to rely on anyone else for their performance like a wr or qb.
