I like your pick at that price.....Imawildandcrazyguy ran perhaps the best race of his life when closing strongly being 10 wide to finish fourth in the Kentucky Derby, a performance that convinced his trainer, Bill Kaplan, to try for the longer Belmont Stakes. Kaplan, who trains Imawildandcrazyguy for Lewis Pell and Michael Eigner, said the added distance, as well as the location of the race, is appealing.
?He needs 2 1/2 miles but he?ll have to settle for 1 1/2 miles,? Kaplan joked. ?All along, the Belmont has been our primary goal.?As trainer Bill Kaplan worked with Imawildandcrazyguy during a busy two-year-old season, he tabbed the horse?s strength as endurance.
Since that assessment, Kaplan has worked to build on that strength. The 1 1/2-mile distance of Saturday?s $1-million Belmont Stakes (G1) should allow the Wild Event gelding to show his best.
?We pointed to the Belmont Stakes early on,? Kaplan said. ?Even if he had not run well in the Derby, we were coming to the Belmont. We?ve been looking at it since we got him in the barn.?
Kaplan said Imawildandcrazyguy was well within himself while finishing fourth in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1). In emphasizing endurance, Kaplan has developed a unique training program for Imawildandcrazyguy, who raced eight times as a juvenile and placed second in this year?s Risen Star Stakes (G3).
?His breezes are preceded by long gallops,? Kaplan said.
On Sunday, Imawildandcrazyguy galloped about nine furlongs before breezing three furlongs and then galloping out. Kaplan said he often will gallop Imawildandcrazyguy 2 1/2 miles.
?He can handle a lot more training than most horses,? Kaplan said. ?As far as speed goes, he?s got what he?s got. We?ve just tried to emphasize the endurance with him. That?s his strength.?
GL IE....My choices are between Tiago/Rag's and Riches and Imawildandcrazyguy....not a real great race that I'm excited about....we'll see 2morrow
