Missed Tributes

By Ben Stein
Published 3/6/2006 2:08:21 AM
spectator.org

Now for a few humble thoughts about the Oscars.

I did not see every second of it, but my wife did, and she joins me in noting that there was not one word of tribute, not one breath, to our fighting men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan or to their families or their widows or orphans. There were pitifully dishonest calls for peace -- as if the people we are fighting were interested in any peace for us but the peace of the grave. But not one word for the hundreds of thousands who have served and are serving, not one prayer or moment of silence for the dead and maimed.

Basically, the sad truth is that Hollywood does not think of itself as part of America, and so, to Hollywood, the war to save freedom from Islamic terrorists is happening to someone else. It does not concern them except insofar as it offers occasion to mock or criticize George Bush. They live in dreamland and cannot be gracious enough to thank the men and women who pay with their lives for the stars' ability to live in dreamland. This is shameful.

The idea that it is brave to stand up for gays in Hollywood, to stand up against Joe McCarthy in Hollywood (fifty years after his death), to say that rich white people are bad, that oil companies are evil -- this is nonsense. All of these are mainstream ideas in Hollywood, always have been, always will be. For the people who made movies denouncing Big Oil, worshiping gays, mocking the rich to think of themselves as brave -- this is pathetic, childish narcissism.

The brave guy in Hollywood will be the one who says that this is a fabulously great country where we treat gays, blacks, and everyone else as equal. The courageous writer in Hollywood will be the one who says the oil companies do their best in a very hostile world to bring us energy cheaply and efficiently and with a minimum of corruption. The producer who really has guts will be the one who says that Wall Street, despite its flaws, has done the best job of democratizing wealth ever in the history of mankind.

No doubt the men and women who came to the Oscars in gowns that cost more than an Army Sergeant makes in a year, in limousines with champagne in the back seat, think they are working class heroes to attack America -- which has made it all possible for them. They are not. They would be heroes if they said that Moslem extremists are the worst threat to human decency since Hitler and Stalin. But someone might yell at them or even attack them with a knife if they sad that, so they never will.

Hollywood is above all about self: self-congratulation, self-promotion, and above all, self-protection. This is human and basic, but let's not kid ourselves. There is no greatness there in the Kodak theater. The greatness is on patrol in Kirkuk. The greatness lies unable to sleep worrying about her man in Mosul. The greatness sleeps at Arlington National Cemetery and lies waiting for death in VA Hospitals. God help us that we have sunk so low as to confuse foolish and petty boasting with the real courage that keeps this nation and the many fools in it alive and flourishing on national TV.

Stein is just bitter that he is not getting consistent work. Remember, this guy was a former Republican speechwriter.

To be fair, he is a smart guy. The problem I have is with him spouting that same old rubbish that, "our enemies want to kill us all." No they don't. Just as many people on our side wish all Muslims dead. The vast majority of the people we are fighting want us out of the Middle East and Israel back under Muslim and/or Palestinian rule.

Don't get me wrong; it is good that we are protecting Israel. I'll even go so far as to say that our presence in many Middle Eastern countries serves the greater good. But this crap about them wanting every American dead reveals that he is either part of the conservative propaganda machine or just plain clueless.

Nick,

You look like Ben Stein a little bit, now that I think about it. Neither here or there, just an observation.

He said Muslim extremists, not ALL muslims, want us dead.We had better be sophisticated enough to know the difference by now. They want our culture extinguished because it threatens them and their religious beliefs. We are in a battle that will last decades, and may well end with the nuclear destruction of a good part of our world,if Dr Kahn of Pakistan and his ilk have their way.Do you trust the good people of Iran with military Nukes,"Nick" (forgot your real name, what is it again?)?How long after they have it do they go for Israel?Dismissing his comments by saying he's bitter at not getting enough work opportunities makes you part of the problem and the clueless one in my book.

Ben Stein is defintely very smart. I was rarely able to win his money. ....Man, I hated smart ass Jimmy Kimmel on that show. Slightly more tolerable now.

Stein's fine, but his articles are really starting to repeat themselves right about now. His articles are like hearing "Brown Eyed Girl" in a bar (or even worse, some crap like Bon Jovi 'Livin on a Prayer' aka the dumbest song to ever captivate a nation). Everyone acts all surprised and sings along like it's the first and last time they heard such a rare melody. Meanwhile, I heard it yesterday, I'll hear it again tomorrow and probably every night I go out. How about some fresh material for a change?

I have to agree, whatever side of the war debate you are on, how hard is it to say thank you? A friggin moment of silence or something.

Pretty selfish. :nono:

I don't even know why, but I'm not sure I can recall ever being quite so stunned by anything written on this forum than this quote from you. For some reason I had you pegged as a big "Living' on a Prayer" fan... not sure why.

Other than that, I agree with your post. Just another blah blah article by Stein saying the exact same thing he always does and trying to make him sound like some super-patriot troop supporter and once again subtlely talks down to anyone that disagrees.

Just who does Ben Stein think he is to say such things? Just another entertainer opening his big, no nothing, elitist mouth!

That song, and most by Bon Jovi, may as well be by the Backstreet Boys or NSYNC. How did they ever get perceived as being "edgy"? It's one of the rock n roll mysteries that has bothered me since everyone got caught up in that rough and tumble line "....I'm a cowboy, on a steal horse I ride. I'm wanted dead or alive." Are you friggin kidding me? This is what's wrong with America, damnit. :SIB

I have to disagree that fanatic muslims are basically against the west--if you read world news you'll note they are against every swing dick in every country that won't concede to them.
Pull up news in AFP any day of any year in any country and its same ole shit Muslims vs all others.

nick.....you`ll have to explain that to the hindu`s in india, and to the militant islamists there that attacked a hotel, took nine people hostage, sprayed fire and threw grenades at a crowded marketplace from an upper floor.....seven people are killed and fifteen injured...

in scotland where muslim pakistani immigrants abducted, tortured and then burned alive a 15-year-old scottish teen in a horrendous attack. ...

the murders in manila...

and...........india and the sudan and algeria and afghanistan and pakistan and russia and chechnya and the philippines and indonesia and nigeria and thailand and spain and egypt and bangladesh and ingushetia and dagestan and turkey and morocco and yemen and lebanon and france and uzbekistan and tunisia and kosovo and bosnia and somalia and ethiopia and the netherlands and and......

there`s honestly not enough bandwidth....

pretty much wherever muslims believe their religion tells them to:

"Fight and slay the Unbelievers wherever ye find them. Seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem of war."
Qur'an, Sura 9:5

the religion of peace.....and if you don`t believe it,we`ll cut off your bean,...or.....

(they do have lower rates of adultery...true dat`)..

btw..considering the venue, the crowd and what was expected,to anticipate any kudos for the troops seemed bit ridiculous...

but,i thought stewart was pretty restrained....

he actually took some nice shots at the vacuous self congratulate-ees......

smurf,i apologize for pre-judging stewart...i was wrong...

Stop drinkin the BJ koolaid. They suck. ...Unless you are also a fan of the boy bands, cuz that's what they are equal to when you think about it. Good marketing to fool everyone, I guess. I will gladly admit that JBJ is an excellent businessman - one of the best among entertainers. But I will never buy into his musical tripe.

Guns 'n Roses on the other hand, were definitely the real deal. You can tell a clear difference between the lyrics and lack of fake renegade attitude. Of course, Axl Rose sounds like a far worse business mind and definitely a worse person in general.

Springsteen is the king of New Jersey. There should be no debate about that. BJ basically copied his blue collar formula on most of their songs and somehow made people think they were genuine. 'Living on a Prayer' is 'Born to Run', but with less honesty, worse music, and a far more annoying voice. And BJ of course never created anything that could approach a song like "Atlantic City". No claims of being a cowboy in that one, just debt, gambling, failing relationship, and the kinds of things that are much more real.

I'm not going to deny I like the tune, but I just figured as one of the stalwarts of all things 80s here along with Kosar, you would be a fan of one of the all-time hair band anthems!

There are a great many things about the 80's that sucked then and suck now. Nostalgia is not a strong enough emotion to make me suddenly adore it just because I was younger then. Fortunately, I learned to overlook artistic integrity for the sake of poontang from time to time. I really blew some chances back in the day because of my music snobbery. I definitely regret that. :sadwave:

Sounds like Smurph didn't get a whole lot of tail in the 80s and blames the hair band with the dreamy frontman. I don't how many less notches on my belt I would have w/o the music of Jon Bongiovi, but suffice it to say it would be more than 4. It says right in the song "I've seen a MILLION faces, and I've rocked them ALL" Not a hundred, not 10,000, not a few, not some. A MILLION and ALL.

And off-topic, but how can Ben Stein write a whole article, and not thank the troops once? Scumbag!
