Ben Stein speaks out

Get Off His Back
By Ben Stein

A few truths, for those who have ears and eyes and care to know the truth:

1.) The hurricane that hit New Orleans and Mississippi and Alabama was an astonishing tragedy. The suffering and loss of life and peace of mind of the residents of those areas is acutely horrifying.

2.) George Bush did not cause the hurricane. Hurricanes have been happening for eons. George Bush did not create them or unleash this one.

3.) George Bush did not make this one worse than others. There have been far worse hurricanes than this before George Bush was born.

4.) There is no overwhelming evidence that global warming exists as a man-made phenomenon. There is no clear-cut evidence that global warming even exists. There is no clear evidence that if it does exist it makes hurricanes more powerful or makes them aim at cities with large numbers of poor people. If global warming is a real phenomenon, which it may well be, it started long before George Bush was inaugurated, and would not have been affected at all by the Kyoto treaty, considering that Kyoto does not cover the world's worst polluters -- China, India, and Brazil. In a word, George Bush had zero to do with causing this hurricane. To speculate otherwise is belief in sorcery.

6.) George Bush had nothing to do with the hurricane contingency plans for New Orleans. Those are drawn up by New Orleans and Louisiana. In any event, the plans were perfectly good: mandatory evacuation. It is in no way at all George Bush's fault that about 20 percent of New Orleans neglected to follow the plan. It is not his fault that many persons in New Orleans were too confused to realize how dangerous the hurricane would be. They were certainly warned. It's not George Bush's fault that there were sick people and old people and people without cars in New Orleans. His job description does not include making sure every adult in America has a car, is in good health, has good sense, and is mobile.

7.) George Bush did not cause gangsters to shoot at rescue helicopters taking people from rooftops, did not make gang bangers rape young girls in the Superdome, did not make looters steal hundreds of weapons, in short make New Orleans into a living hell.

8.) George Bush is the least racist President in mind and soul there has ever been and this is shown in his appointments over and over. To say otherwise is scandalously untrue.

9.) George Bush is rushing every bit of help he can to New Orleans and Mississippi and Alabama as soon as he can. He is not a magician. It takes time to organize huge convoys of food and now they are starting to arrive. That they get in at all considering the lawlessness of the city is a miracle of bravery and organization.

10.) There is not the slightest evidence at all that the war in Iraq has diminished the response of the government to the emergency. To say otherwise is pure slander.

11.) If the energy the news media puts into blaming Bush for an Act of God worsened by stupendous incompetence by the New Orleans city authorities and the malevolence of the criminals of the city were directed to helping the morale of the nation, we would all be a lot better off.

12.) New Orleans is a great city with many great people. It will recover and be greater than ever. Sticking pins into an effigy of George Bush that does not resemble him in the slightest will not speed the process by one day.

13.) The entire episode is a dramatic lesson in the breathtaking callousness of government officials at the ground level. Imagine if Hillary Clinton had gotten her way and they were in charge of your health care.

God bless all of those dear people who are suffering so much, and God bless those helping them, starting with George Bush.

a little in addition--the area was classified disaster area before storm even hit--which to my knowedge is a 1st.--What aided to late arrival of guard was actually N.O did not take the eye of the storm when shifting to Mississippi (which you hear nothing about) at last moment--and real disaster did not hit N.O. till day later when levee broke--pretty tough job to spread resouces over 2 state area-3 state if you want to include Bama. I imagine there was a lot of moving personel to and fro--and who would think that in U.S. you'd have to send the military with body armor and guns
for relief work :(

Mostly red herrings - noone believes George Bush causes hurricanes - Jesus H. Christ.

The FEMA director didn't KNOW people were dying in the SuperDome until THURSDAY and THAT is ACCEPTABLE?

Noone in W's administration has YET been held accountable for anything! Not Karl Rove, not Dumsfeld, and now not this pathetic excuse for a FEMA director.

REPUBLICANS down here are calling out the Feds on this one. Check out Joe Scarborough and see what he says. As he points out, the news networks had no problem getting in there and setting up cameras and broadcasting.

How hard can it be to drop water and MREs by helicopter onto the pieces of roadway and the SuperDome? How F&cking hard can that be?!

Do you realize the Governor of Louisiana still hasnt called a state of emergency? Did you know she continues to refuse to allow the feds to be in charge of the rescue efforts, despite repeated requests from the administration, simply because she thinks she will then get blamed? Could the feds have done better - sure- but their hands have been tied.

I appreciate Ben Stein's intelligence and wit, but he is little more than a tool for the Republicans at this point. Nobody blames Bush for Katrina - like Ocelot says - it's absurd. When things go as bad as last week's recovery then people vent frustration at every level above them - none go higher than Bush. Is he suggesting that Bush should receive all the privelages of Presidency without incurring any of the criticism that should come with the job? Well, he didn't feel that way about Clinton I'm sure. There's no doubt he would NOT have written such an article in defense of Willy under the same situation.

When Bush doesn't speak for days while anarchy insues it gives an appearance that he doesn't care. People are allowed to be as pissed off at they feel like at everyone, IMO. Mayor, FEMA, Governor, President ...or like some for some strange reason - France.

It's disturbing to me that when we have such a crisis as this, people seem more concerned that the Prez is being unfairly blamed than they are at the actual crisis itself! That's partisanship for ya I suppose.

Among the more absurd comments is his 13th which involves slipping in a shot at Hillary Clinton to complete the inanity.

This says it all:
"Ben Stein is a writer, actor, economist, and lawyer living in Beverly Hills and Malibu." Utterly out-of-touch with reality.

c'mon, now! Never an honest day's work in his life???? Are you serious??? We're not talking about Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton who this honest day's work quote would apply, we're talking about Ben Stein.

I'll post some of his bio for you. He's done plenty of honest work, read closely.

Benjamin Jeremy Stein (born November 25, 1944, in Washington, D.C.) is an American attorney, former game show host, actor, screenwriter, former political speechwriter, law professor, economist, author, columnist, as well as a commercial personality.

His early years were spent growing up in a heavily Democratic neighborhood in Silver Spring, Maryland. After graduating from Montgomery Blair High School, Stein attended Columbia University, where he majored in economics. He graduated with honors in 1966, and then enrolled in Yale University Law School, graduating as the class valedictorian in 1970.

He was first a poverty lawyer in New Haven, Connecticut and Washington, D.C. (gee, valedictorian of his class at Yale and he works as a poverty lawyer??? Sounds like quite the humanitarian to me) before becoming a trial lawyer for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Stein's first teaching stint was as an adjunct professor, teaching political and social content of mass culture at American University in Washington, D.C, and then at University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). Additionally, he also held classes on political and civil rights from the United States Constitution at UCSC. At Pepperdine University in Southern California, Stein taught libel law and securities law and its ethical aspects. He remains an active law professor at its Malibu campus, having joined Pepperdine's faculty in the mid-1980s. (He's not just living it up in Malibu. Sounds like he worked/works there as well).

During the Revolutionary War- Mary McAuley aka (Molly Pitcher) nursed wounded soldiers and literally carried kids out of range of British cannons. For records keeping those survivors were listed as "Molly Coddled". Today it means spoiled
It's also rumored that his nurse gives him a hand job to get his heart going before rising in the morning

No matter what happens under any circumstances the same people continue to blame Bush for everything bad just as many continue to blame Clinton for everything bad that happened before Bush. This is simply assinine.

By the way, as has been said by many before, if anyone dropped the ball it is the state of Louisiana and its elected officials. No doubt the federal response could have been better. But Louisiana did a horrible job. And why is no one suggesting that THEY should have done something to evacuate the people before the hurricane? Wouldn't that have made more sense? It is a sad situation, indeed. When we had devastating earthquakes in California, we didn't blame the feds. Our state government took action.

This is what Ben Stein wanted to say...

These people lost everything? Most had nothing to begin with. Now their public assistance check stopped arriving and they are pissed. I don't see any bankers or lawyers walking the streets bitching about no one helping them. 98% of the people with common sense moved north days before the destruction.
