Don't get me wrong. I believe you should have the right to choose how you get your entertainment but it seems like a ripoff to ask for cash every month and not offer what others can without asking for cash monthly.
This may not affect you short term but someday you may see an advertisement on tv for a flick and when you go to get it then you have to wait a few weeks.
If this doesn't bother you then you are probably one of two things.
1. A person who just doesn't watch many flicks.
2. A old school film guy who thinks most of the new stuff is junk(Which it pretty much is).
Or you are just a very patient person. :)

I just wanted to point this out to Madjackers because Netflix is keeping this pretty quiet and hoping it kind of goes down without much buzz.
The studios are the same way because they just want you to go out and buy the flick when you can't rent or stream it.

IMO this won't be any hit at all to netflix.

Laziness reigns king in the good old US of A. As long as people don't have to get off their keisters then netflix will be here to stay.

Well if Blockbuster doesn't follow suit then expect to see commercial after commercial about this and try to get you to switch over to them.
BB has no cash to advertise but banks continue to give them cash so who knows.
They are only $900M in debt right now. What's a few more million.:142smilie

I do have to say that I thought this would be a bigger deal on here.
Oh well, I just wanted to make it known to those that had no clue of this going down.
It can only benefit a guy like me,but doesn't seem like as many will care about a delay
.
Enjoy your flicks any way you get them. :0corn

How do you confuse laziness with convenience? Seriously? Why pay $6 a movie, when I can get instant and blue ray movies for only $10.

EPIC FAIL.

personally not one of those folks who wants to see movies right away..

damn sure not going to spend 35-40 bucks at theatre on 2 tickets w/2-popcorn and 2-drinks

they can shove that schyt were the sun don't shine.

but certainly see your point about the delay and Big Business

My wife and I like going out to the movies. Yea 35 bucks and its a rip off but gets us out of the house and we like the atmoshpere on Friday nights. Its our wind down time from a hectic week of work. We then go out and eat! $100 every friday. Worth every penny to us.

Yeah, I have to agree with the others, 4 weeks is nothing to me. Hell, I usually forget about the new releases I want to see anyway, so by the time I remember I want to see them they've already been out for a few months. Besides, I probably rent as many, if not more, shows than I do movies. Why pay for HBO when you can get all their shows through Netflix?

I pay $18 a month for unlimited movies sent to my mail, and I can also watch movies instantly online. Something catastrophic would have to happen with Netflix for me to cancel my subscription.

I am completely unphased and unaffected by a 4 week delay on release of any movie. Hell, I rarely watch a movie that is worthwhile anyway......

Thanks for weighing in.

Why don't you just go down the list of all threads that don't affect you and state the same thing.

"I am unaffected by this thread because I don't watch hockey"

"I am unaffected by this thread because I have never taken a plane to a pawn shop before"

"I am unaffected by the drinking thread because I am not drinking tonight"

Maybe he will be affected when they announce you can only watch LSU football games 4 weeks after they are played.

Yes I do. :mj07:

You could tell??:142smilie
What gave it away my sales pitch to support local independents or my hatred towards BB and Netflix.:142smilie

And I can tell you that movie releases within the first 28 days are about 60% of our profit.
Porn is 15% and older releases and games are 25% of rental income.

I didn't read the whole thread last time I was on here, so I didn't see this. It doesn't surprise me at all that 60% of your profits come from new releases. I would venture to guess that's true for all brick-and-mortar video businesses. So I could see how something like a 4-week delay would be very detrimental to your business.

Having said that, I would guess Netflix's profits for new releases are a fraction of that amount. Sure they have a lot of new releases, but they also have something ridiculous like 100,000 titles total. So even if they lost some business because of the 4-week delay on new releases, I don't think it would hit them the same way it would a local video store. But I do agree with you, I'm sure there will be some Netflix customers who won't be happy with the changes.

FWIW I got the hangover on Friday after it was released to dvd from Netflix , Bluray too.

That is because the policy has not started. It will begin in the coming weeks and it will only start with Warner titles.
If it had started in Dec. then The Hangover(Warner) would not have been available on Netflix until Jan. 18th when it really had a street date of 12/22.

Netflix considers new releases a money loser in reality as they cost more for them to purchase than catalog titles and they are not getting any cssh return on each rental like brick and mortar stores do.
I just don't see how this go be anything but a negative for them. It sure as hell is by no means a positive in signing up with them.
I have seen other sites with people saying same thing as on here and others saying goodbye to Netflix.
Paying $20 a month for catalog rental titles and not even the option of new stuff?

I received the blu-ray for inglorious basterds (sic) today. Seems to me like it was just in theaters, no:shrug: Anyway, it is clearly worth the 9.99 I pay monthy.

"Bend over Netflix users..." -- Really? Bend over?

I don't like the 4 week delay, but it's not something I feel like I'm getting screwed on.

My guess is that very few Netflix users are at the $20/month level.

Starting at $9 and a few levels between that and $20.

I do find your comment about Redbox being forced to increase their prices, though. That seems like horse shit to me.

keygray - are you required to charge a certain amount as a local brick & mortar? In other words, if you wanted to have $1 per night pricing, could you?

Well here is the deal with Redbox. I get my movies from the same distribution center as Redbox. The distribution center makes the discs "Rental Ready" for Redbox so all Redbox employees have to do is really just put them in the boxes. The distributor was told by Universal and Warner that they will not be allowed to send Redbox movies until 28 days after release.Something Redbox didn't like AT ALL since they can only get so many titles in a box they focus on new releases as a market. Redbox can always sideways buy i.e Walmart but then they would have to pay someone to get the discs ready for the boxes. Not gonna happen. Redbox and studios are discussing options now and raising the price is studios idea to drop the 28 day window. Also they don't like the price Redbox sells the movies for and want that to change.

As for my store, I can charge a dime a rental if I want to.
We are $2 a day on new releases(not due until close next day) and $2 for 7 days on catalog.
We will reserve movies for you so you can get any title any day or you get a free rental if we don't have it held(which never happens) and that is something BB or Netflix can't promise.

Like I said, after 22 years of business, like all brick and mortar stores and small businesses we are hanging on by a thread. Funny thing is so is BB. Times have changed and it is time for me to go work for "THE MAN" soon. :(

Yeah, I use my Tivo box and/or my Playstaion 3 machine the same way a Roku works. It really is great.

I would have to think you would take a hit if you couldn't rent new movies for 4 weeks. But if everyone else couldn't either then it hopefully would be a wash.

Your customers would still spend 60% of their money on new releases. Those new releases would just would be a few weeks farther from the theaters.

But like you said, hope this new policy hopes you hang on a bit longer. I have always hated Blockbuster and held out at my local shop until it closed. Netflix has a fairly good coorporate record (treats its employees right) and is local to my area, so I felt comfortable supporting it.

I still hit up a local video store near my current apartment from time to time, on an impulse basis.
