DON'T: Expect much out of the starters Thursday

Provided that the first-team crew aren't colossal failures in the opening quarter, expect most of the starters (or otherwise termed, first-team) to be pulled after a series or two. It would be surprising if they played the entire first quarter.

However, if they're still on the field by that point, then the coaching staff believes that they needed more work and thus, weren't playing very well. Yet, one shouldn't necessarily commit fandom suicide or drink to an alarming excess because of it.

The team isn't implementing a focused gameplan to beat the Falcons; they're more concerned about their own players, where they fit, how they can contribute, and what changes need to be applied to correct certain mistakes.

DO: Get familiar with backup and bubble players

We have an intense three-way battle for the vacant starting strong safety position between George Iloka, Taylor Mays and rookie Shawn Williams. Iloka is listed with the first-team defense, so it's a reasonable conclusion that he'll start on Thursday.

Mays and Williams should rotate throughout the evening, similar to how the team rotated all three during trianing camp. How much will Iloka play? That's undetermined. He may accumulate more snaps than the other starters because the team is continuing evaluations at the position to determine who will start.

We're also looking forward at battles near the bottom of the roster, such as the fifth and sixth cornerback, fourth running back, backup quarterback, fifth and sixth receiver. Preseason games like this carry a critical component for players vying for a spot on the 53-man roster. This is their playoffs.

DON'T: Apply this game as a reaction to the season as a whole.

In fact, we'd argue that applying any predication based on what you see in the preseason is extremely risky.

Offenses and defenses, from both teams, will play more generic formations, routes, and plays. Jay Gruden and Mike Zimmer will want to keep their best cards buried away for more important games during the regular season.

Additionally the backups and third-team players will play together, which never happens during the regular season. You'll have a backup starting in spots because of an injury with the starter, but never will an entire second and third team unit play together when it matters (we're not talking about mop-up duty).

So if the second-team offense struggles with a bunch of three-and-out possessions, it's not like Josh Johnson is throwing to the receivers that will be contributing much. However, watching one-on-one matchups is a completely different animal.

DO: Look for those rookies

Tyler Eifert and Bernard Giovani may have a similar time-card with the first-teamers in an effort to avoid injuries.

But the rest of Cincinnati's '13 draft class will turn in a significant number of snaps on Thursday. From Shawn Williams rotating in at start safety, to Margus Hunt's continued development as a defensive end, and even Cobi Hamilton, who may benefit with playing time with A.J. Green and Andrew Hawkins sidelined this weekend, you will see a lot of rookies contributing Thursday night. Sean Porter should make his debut early, as will Tanner Hawkinson.

Where do things stand at backup QB?

It was expected to be a close race between Josh Johnson and John Skelton, but Johnson has looked better so far, having a better grasp of the offense and better touch on his passes.

Skelton, who hasn't played in a West Coast scheme before, has struggled in his reads and has the most interceptions of the three quarterbacks in camp. He has a good arm, but needs to start showing some consistency.

Johnson and Skelton will get a lot of playing time in the first two preseason games. Lewis is hoping that Zac Robinson, who has been on the PUP list due to an elbow injury, can return at some point and get into the competition as well.

Five Falcons to Watch Tonight vs. Bengals

QB Dominique Davis

Matt Ryan may only see a series or two in the preseason opener if anything, which should give Davis a lot of work with the starters. While he won?t have Julio Jones or Tony Gonzalez to throw to, he should get plenty of time with players like Harry Douglas and Chase Coffman, as well as many of the Falcons starters up front, a considerable uptick from what he was predominantly working with last preseason as the fourth string quarterback to start off. If Davis picks up where he left off last summer, he?s well on his way to locking down the No. 2 spot behind Matt Ryan.

OT Lamar Holmes/Ryan Schraeder

Holmes will get the start at right tackle. I would not be surprised to see Holmes get the brunt of the work in the first half and give way to Schraeder at some point in the second or third quarter. I also would not be surprised for the Falcons to pull the plug fairly early on Sam Baker at left tackle, and give Schraeder reps on the left side in the first half, so the possibility that they can evaluate both Schraeder and Holmes at the same time. The Bengals front line is a formidable unit, and with ends like Michael Johnson and Carlos Dunlap, all of the Falcons tackles will have their backs against the wall. Luckily for them, it?s doubtful that they will see either starter for extended reps.

MLB Brian Banks

Tonight?s game will mark Banks? first real football action in a decade since he was falsely incarcerated as a top high school prospect. Banks has received plenty of work in recent months with the Falcons, but ostensibly when he hits the field he will be even rawer than your typical rookie due to all the time and learning lost. While the expectation won?t be that Banks will be a monster his first game in, it will be important for him to try and limit the mental errors he makes. And if he can make a couple of plays here and there, particularly against the run, that will be a bonus.

CB Desmond Trufant

I suspect Trufant will get the start at right corner. It?s a shame that Bengals wideout A.J. Green will be out of the lineup since Trufant would get an opportunity to test himself against one of the league?s best. Or at least another opportunity, since he gets two of those opportunities every day in practice going against Jones and Roddy White. Instead he should get plenty of work against the Bengals new de facto No. 1 receiver in the absence of Green which is Mohamed Sanu. Well, he was likely to see a lot of Sanu regardless, since he is the receiver that typically lines up against the right side. Sanu isn?t the fastest receiver, but he?s got good size and athleticism which allows him to make plays on the ball even when you have him blanketed. That should be a good first test for Trufant as he prepares to get ready for Marques Colston and Lance Moore in Week 1.

TE Tyler Eifert

I mention Eifert because he?s likely to get extended reps in his first preseason action. The 6?6″ 250 first round pick has had a strong camp and will be a difficult matchup for the Falcons starting linebackers, let alone the backups. With Sean Weatherspoon out of the lineup, it will be a good opportunity for Akeem Dent to showcase any abilities he possesses in coverage. And certainly if any of the reserves fare well if/when matched up on an island against Eifert, it could greatly benefit their chances of making the Falcons final roster. Essentially you?re watching Eifert to see which Falcon defender is covering him on that given play.
