The odds seem awfully big compared to sports bettings 10%. How do you guys make money at this? I love betting horses, I have tvg on dish network and bet online, but really have no clue and rarely win. what types of bets do you guys mostly make...wps, exacta (boxes), tri's (boxes), etc...Is there a respectable place to go and get opinions on the daily races. I am not looking to get rich, but would like to win enough to at least break even to justify it as a viable hobby. Any help will be appreciated...

its best to kind of study the day before. i takes me about 10-15 minutes for each race to look over everything. i will also take about a half hour to look over yesteday's races. there is a lot of factors that you have to consider and it would take me quite a while to explain. a basic theory is took look at the jockey and the trainer first, see how well they have done together. i also look at past performances on the track at that length. a big factor as well is the warm ups. you will notice most of the time, if a horse is having good warm up/practice's it should run well in the race. alot of time's to though, a horse hasn't ran or practice'd in a while. if they horse has run well before, it may not need to practice or run. alot of people get confused on that. a good book to buy that i read and has some race tips is 'Betting Thoroughbreds by Steven Davidowitz' the book is probably 10 years old, but the tips in there are great. and for bets i usually just stick to win/place. but here and there i go for exacta's.
i'll be around tomarrow for the aqueduct Race, i can go through each race and basically break down what i like about each horse....

k-dog brings up some good points.trainers and horses are creatures of habit.trainers repeat what works, some win a high % at certain levels, maidiens, stakes ,claimers 2yo's ect.some ponys win only at certain distances, surfaces and tracks.and are often entered only for a good workout at wroung dist or surface or to fill the field.some good info in the d.r.f. or track angles not in print on your own.find a book with rebates to get juice at a resonable rate.remember the pro's? on tvg are cappin every race turn volume down and study a form.find a angle that works that the public is not on.i love playing certain horses that were vanned off, lost rider, pulled up or other serious trouble line, often overlooked.

Thanks for all the help guys. I will be looking for your advice in the future. Is there a number you guys will not go lower than when betting a horse to win (odds)?

TDP-just what works for me,but i prefer 2/1 or more on win.never be afraid to bet same amount on your longshots as the chalk.thats were your big scores come.load up on that 3/5 that cant lose, for some easy money, you will soon be broke.you are correct very tough game but if you have the time and study the game there is profit to be made.my cappin consists of puttin everything i have seen and learned in many years and backing it up with some numbers mostly internal fractions to comfirm my plays.many are playing puter picks without lookiing at the other factors they usally come up with the same plays.and may show a profit.still believe there's things you can't put in those programs if you watch the races, replays study one track or circiut know the bias ,jocks and trainers, owners, horses you can profit.G.L.

Kdogg- If I'm awake I may stop by to check out your analysis. I love betting the ponies, but, like TDP, I struggle to win. Nothing like an afternoon in the Lone Star simulcast book!
