Big East and ACC in Betting Spotlight

Four ranked teams from two of the premier conferences will showcase their talents this Wednesday. In the Big East, No. 16 Pittsburgh hits the road to No. 15 Connecticut, with the Panthers looking to stay unbeaten in conference play. Later, 12th ranked North Carolina visits 24th ranked Clemson, which will be a test of wills for each team trying to steady recent developments they have felt. For sports bettors, a very busy Hump Day.

Panthers on the prowl

It wasn?t supposed to be this way. Pittsburgh (13-2, 6-5-2 ATS) lost too much talent from a season ago and had too many gaping holes to be considered nothing more than a team that would finish fifth to eighth in the Big East. Instead, Jamie Dixon of Pitt is the mid-season favorite for national coach of the year with what he?s done in the Steel City. The emergence of Ashton Gibbs and the return of Gilbert Brown and Jermaine Dixon have seen the Panthers take off and with another conference upset, would stay tied with Villanova for the top spot. Pitt has always been able to play with physical teams and is 22-7 ATS versus clubs who average 40 or more rebounds a game.

Connecticut (11-4, 5-7-1 ATS) needs a positive right away after giving away a 19-point lead at Georgetown and falling 72-69.? It?s the most heartbreaking loss this year. It?s not even close,? coach Jim Calhoun said. ?We took our 20 minutes of work, threw it away and said, ?OK, now let?s play an even game.??

Turnovers were the bugaboo for the Huskies, committing 15 in all. Coach Calhoun will try to get his guards to value the possession of the ball more, since UConn is 9-0 (4-4 ATS) when they commit 13 or less turnovers.
Connecticut is a six-point favorite at Sportsbook.com and is 17-5 ATS as a home favorite of six points or less or pick. The Huskies are among the best defensive teams in the country holding teams to 37.2 percent shooting and will have to contain Pittsburgh. The Panthers magic formula for winning is shooting over 40 percent, as they are 12-0 and 5-4-2 ATS.

This Big East battle starts at 7 Eastern on ESPN2 with Connecticut 6-2 and 4-4 ATS in last eight meetings at home.

ACC foes on the mend

North Carolina (12-4, 6-8 ATS) was stunned at College of Charleston 82-79 and came back and beat Virginia Tech by 14 in next outing. Clemson was duped at Duke, losing by 21 points and rebounded with 72-56 win over Boston College as nine-point favorites. Each ACC will look to continue winning ways this evening.

One of Roy Williams coaching axioms is he doesn?t play favorites. If one of his players is playing great and the other average, the one giving the better effort will start and use up the majority of minutes, that?s his belief. Normally by now, Williams is into comfortable starting five and other roles have been defined, but not this year, as many players have taken two steps forward and one back. The Tar Heels are 40-25 ATS when playing against a team with a winning record over the last three seasons.

You can?t help but be impressed with the job Oliver Purnell has done at Clemson (13-3, 8-5 ATS). In the past, losing as many quality players as last year would have spelled rebuilding on the South Carolina campus, but not these days. Purnell has imported a continual flow of players like freshman Noel Johnson and Devin Booker, meshing with established players like Trevor Booker and Demontez Stitt. Purnell realizing he has 10 players not that different ability-wise, opened up competition for starting spots, to keep guys hungry. The Tigers are 11-2 ATS at home against teams making 45 percent of their shots.

Clemson will seek to improve upon 4-6 and 5-5 ATS mark at Littlejohn Coliseum vs. the Heels and is a four-point favorite to do so. The Tigers are 6-0 ATS at home versus good three-point shooting teams making 37 percent or more of their attempts over the last three seasons.

This is the 9:00 Eastern clash on ESPN and North Carolina is 3-11 ATS off a win against a conference win since last season.

Power Line ? Connecticut by 3, Clemson by 3

North Carolina at Clemson

North Carolina at Clemson

North Carolina at Clemson

Both these teams roared back Sunday after ugly losses. Each is ranked in the teens and needs a win against a quality opponent.

North Carolina beat Virginia Tech Sunday, but its previous win over a team worth talking about was on vs. Michigan State December 1.

Clemson beat Boston College comfortably Sunday. Before that, the last tournament-type team the Tigers edged was Butler November 29.

The Tar Heels have won 10 consecutive games over the Tigers going back to 2004. North Carolina is 6-4 against the spread in that span including a 94-70 win as a 13-point favorite last January. The Tar Heels led the all-tmie series 122-19 heading into Wednesday.

Tar Heels? Recovering ankles

North Carolina got past Virginia Tech 78-64 Sunday night. Both Marcus Ginyard and Will Graves returned to the lineup after sitting out with sprained right ankles.

Graves hit three 3-pointers in a three-minute stretch in the second half to help the Tar Heels pull away.

?He?s our best shooter, everybody on this team knows that?, UNC forward Deon Thompson told the Charlotte Observer. ?When his shot is flying? it?s hard to beat us.?

Graves sat out the previous Monday?s loss at College of Charleston. The Tar Heels only made one shot from behind the arc in that game.

?When [Will Graves is] out there playing defense, getting all over the boards, rebounding the way he did tonight, I think everybody in this locker room understands what a huge part he is of this team, especially when he's playing like that,? Ginyard told reporters.

Halftime adjustment

Ginyard came off the bench as a defensive specialist. The Tar Heels used a lot of double teams after the break to frustrate ACC leading scorer Malcolm Delaney. Hokies? point man Delaney ran riot in the first half and finished with 26 points, but only had one basket after halftime.

Clemson bouncing back

The Tigers? win over BC was welcome after the drubbing they suffered at Duke January 3.

?I thought it was a very good bounce-back game for us,? Tigers coach Oliver Purnell told the Daily Journal.

Being on the rebound was more than metaphorical. Purnell had them working on rebounding drills all week. Cleaning glass in practice paid off in a 72-56 rebounding edge over BC.

"I'm sure the next couple days we'll be doing the same things we did to help our rebounding the last couple of days,? guard Tanner Smith told the media. ?If we don't box out, we're going to have some problems."

If the Tigers want to win this one, he?s right. Tar Heels? coach Roy Williams wants his team to dominate in the paint, even if he?s slowly getting used to outside shooting.

"I still want Sean May and Ed Davis and Tyler Hansbrough [type-players] to handle the inside, but I've always said we've got to have a real good mix," Williams said after his team?s Sunday win.

Taking care of the ball a key

The other aspect of the Tigers? game that coach Purnell wanted to see improvement in was offensive turnovers. That?s a work in progress. Clemson still committed 13 turnovers Sunday after yielding 16 to Duke the week before.

A couple of trends

UNC are 1-4 SU on neutral and away courts this season.
Clemson are 8-1 SU at home this season, and 8-5 ATS overall this year.
Under is 6-5 in UNC games and 8-3 in Clemson games this year.

The North Carolina Tar Heels are far from the dominant team that won the national title last year. They travel to the Clemson Tigers tonight.

North Carolina is a 3 ?-point road ?dog at BroburySports.com. ESPN will have the coverage at 9 pm ET, preceded by Boston College (+16 ?) at No. 8 Duke.

No. 12 North Carolina (12-4 SU, 6-8 ATS) lost four starters from last year?s squad, with only forward Deon Thompson returning. UNC?s inexperience hasn?t been much of a factor at home where they?re 11-0 straight-up (SU).

The Heels? problems have come in neutral site and road games, going 1-4 SU and 2-3 ATS. Included was an embarrassing 82-79 loss at Charleston as 13 ?-point favorites on Jan. 4.

Guard Marcus Ginyard missed that game with an ankle injury, but there?s no excuse to lose to such an inferior opponent.

North Carolina did bounce back last game, a 78-64 home win over Virginia Tech. That was the conference opener for both schools. Ginyard returned and played 20 minutes off the bench. UNC ?covered? as eight-point ?chalk.?

Clemson (13-3 SU, 8-5 ATS) is ranked 24th in the country. They moved into the top-25 after beating Boston College on Saturday 72-56.

Trevor Booker, a 6-foot-7 senior forward had 19 points. He leads the team in scoring (14.8) and rebounding (8.4). The next two leading scorers are the guard tandem of Demontez Stitt (10.9 PPG) and Tanner Smith (10.4 PPG).

Clemson is scoring 77.9 PPG on the year, ranked 46th in the country. UNC is at 84.6 PPG, sixth in the land.

The problem with Clemson is a lack of scoring up front besides Booker. Forward / center Jerai Grant has some ability, but he?s averaging just 16.8 minutes per game. Relying on the backcourt seems like a dangerous formula against North Carolina.

These teams have met four times over the last two seasons. The Tigers got blown out last year at UNC 94-70. Two years ago, Clemson lost all three games (going 2-1 ATS), but could have easily been 3-0 ATS. The one failure to ?cover? was a ?bad beat? that went into overtime.

UNC is 10-0 SU and 6-4 ATS versus Clemson in the last 10 games. The last SU loss came in January, 2004.

FACTS & STATS: Site: Littlejohn Coliseum (10,000) -- Clemson, South Carolina. Television: ESPN. Home Record: UNC 11-0, Clemson 8-1. Away Record: UNC 0-2, Clemson 3-1. Neutral Record: UNC 1-2, Clemson 2-1. Conference Record: UNC 1-0, Clemson 1-1. Series Record: North Carolina leads, 122-19.

GAME NOTES: Winners of seven of their last eight, the 24th-ranked Clemson Tigers will try to stake their claim as one of the ACC's elite when they play host to the 12th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels tonight at Littlejohn Coliseum.

North Carolina opened conference play on Sunday at home against Virginia Tech, and that contest resulted in a 78-64 triumph for the Tar Heels. It was a nice way to rebound from last week's disappointing 82-79 overtime loss to the College of Charleston. UNC is a perfect 11-0 at home this season, but just 1-4 outside of Chapel Hill, and 0-2 in true road games. Following this game, the Heels will return home to take on Georgia Tech and Wake Forest.

Clemson is 1-1 in the ACC this season thanks to a 72-56 win over Boston College last Saturday. It was the eighth win in nine home games for the Tigers, who improved to 13-3 overall and who following this game, will hit the road for three of its next four, taking on NC State, Georgia Tech and BC once again, surrounding one home date against Duke.

North Carolina owns a commanding 122-19 lead in the all-time series with Clemson, and the Heels have won the last 10 meetings.

Production at the offensive end has clearly been North Carolina's strong suit during the first half of the season, as the team is putting up 84.8 ppg in hitting 49.5 percent of its total shots, which includes a 37.9 percent effort from three-point range. A total of six players are netting in excess of eight points per game, with Deon Thompson (15.8 ppg, 7.1 rpg), Ed Davis (15.5 ppg, 10.3 rpg) and Marcus Ginyard (10.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 4.0 apg) serving as the unit's double-digit scorers. Davis has upped the anty in recent weeks, as he has led the Tar Heels in scoring in three straight games and in six of the last seven. Davis poured in 20 points, came away with 11 rebounds and blocked four shots in the recent win over Virginia Tech, while Larry Drew II logged 14 points and eight assists, and Thompson and Will Graves chipped in 13 points apiece. UNC, which trailed by four at the break, drained 53.8 percent of its field goal attempts on the night, compared to just 35.8 percent by Tech, and the Heels prevailed despite committing 18 turnovers and making good on only 5- of-16 three-point attempts.

Clemson is one of the more efficient shooting teams in the ACC, hitting 48.2 percent of its field goal attempts through the first 15 games of the season. As a result, the Tigers are averaging 77.9 ppg and they also own favorable margins in both rebounding (+5.1) and turnovers (+3.9). The team boasts three double-digit scorers in the form of Trevor Booker (14.8 ppg), Demontez Stitt (10.9 ppg) and Tanner Smith (10.4 ppg), with Booker, a 52.8 percent shooter, also getting it done on the glass (8.4 rpg). The one area he definitely needs to improve however, is at the foul line where he is just 55.8 percent accurate to this point in the season. Defensively, Clemson is yielding just 62.0 ppg on typical shooting efforts of 40.9 percent overall and 30.7 percent from beyond the arc. In the recent win over Boston College, Booker went 8-of-14 from the floor to lead all scorers with 19 points, while Stitt added 15 and Smith finished with 12. The Tigers shot 44.6 percent from the field, while holding the Eagles to 37.1 percent. BC really struggled from long range, going just 2- of-16, and Clemson claimed a 41-34 rebounding advantage.

Although it has yet to win a true road game this season, North Carolina is the better team in this matchup -- at least on paper. That said, expect Clemson to play inspired ball in front of what will surely be a frenzied home crowd, and for the Tigers to snap their 10-game losing streak to the Tar Heels.

Predicted Outcome: Clemson 79, North Carolina 77

Mountaineers in Sunshine State to take on Bulls

Mountaineers in Sunshine State to take on Bulls

Mountaineers in Sunshine State to take on Bulls
Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - The 10th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers make their way to Tampa tonight, as they take on the South Florida Bulls in a Big East matchup at the Sun Dome.

After opening league play with three straight wins, the Mountaineers finally met their match, falling to Notre Dame, 70-68, on Saturday. It was actually the team's second loss in three games, with the other coming to Purdue in a non-conference battle. Still, WVU is a healthy 12-2 overall on the campaign and considered one of the top teams in the nation.

The Bulls on the other hand, are trying to prove they belong in the Big East and so far things haven't gone so well. Following a 10-2 start to the season, USF has dropped three straight conference games, including an 82-65 loss at nationally-ranked Syracuse on Sunday.

In regard to the all-time series, WVU owns a 5-1 edge over USF and the Mountaineers have won the last five meetings.

WVU rallied from a 22-point deficit to give itself a chance to win, but Da'Sean Butler's three-pointer with two seconds left was off the mark and ND survived for the 70-68 win on Saturday. It was a tale of two halves, as the Mountaineers trailed 45-25 at the break before rallying behind 53.1 percent shooting from the floor in the second half. Kevin Jones paced the team in defeat with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Butler finished with 13 points despite a 4-of-20 effort from the floor. Although he had an off game, Butler is still the most important player for WVU and he leads the team in scoring (16.2 ppg) and assists (3.4 apg), to go with 6.2 rpg. Jones ranks second with both 15.8 ppg and 7.9 rpg, while Devin Ebanks adds 12.0 ppg and a team-high 8.0 rpg to the mix.

The Bulls just could not slow down Syracuse over the weekend, as the Orange shot 50.8 percent from the floor and scored 50 points in the paint of an 82-65 decision. USF didn't help its cause with 16 turnovers that resulted in 17 points for the Orange. Dominique Jones though, was a bright spot in the loss, as he poured in 30 points and ripped down nine caroms. It was another big effort from Jones, who leads the team in scoring (18.9 ppg), assists (4.4 apg) and steals (32) on the season. Jarrid Famous, the team's top rebounder at 7.8 rpg, adds 11.2 ppg and he had nine points and 12 rebounds in the loss to Syracuse.

GAME NOTES: The 10th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers make their way to Tampa tonight, as they take on the South Florida Bulls in a Big East matchup at the Sun Dome.

The Mountaineers are simply the more talented team all around and despite the efforts of Jones, WVU should end up on top tonight.
