Gentlemen,i am moving in to my new home next weekend. I have been purchasing things like crazy for the new house. Next on my list is a grill. I like the stainless steel weber ones, but i have friends who have these big green eggs. They all swear by it and say they would never buy anything else. I am about to purchase one, but i was curious if any of you have a big green egg and would care to elaborate???

Waregle, i would suggest that what ever kind of gas grill you buy get one that has stainless food grates and stainless steel burners. The burners and the grates will burn out and rust away in about 1.5 to 2 years if they are made of sheet metal.
the cast iron burners and grates will last about twice that long. Go ahead and spend the extra money and buy stainless steel. Just my experience through the years of grilling and having to buy replacment parts which are pretty expensive to keep my grill in good working order. Hope this helps, enjoy the new house.

Green Egg will give you much better taste and moisture.. But it takes longer and you have to deal with charcoal and light fluid.

Green egg is more along the lines of a smoker than a grill. Personally I don't like Steak on the green egg. But for chicken, pork chops, ribs it blows any gas grill.

I use my gas grill more than the green egg but mostly because of time constraints. If I could only have one I would probaly chose my gas grill. Green egg is my grill of choice on the weekend or when entertaing

I agree with what toast said exactly. The Egg is not best suited for your primary grill. But if you want to be the man at home cookouts (and you don't have a pit), the Egg is what will take you there.

There is one thing that toast said that I don't agree with... lighter fluid. I would go with the chimney starter and hardwood lump charcoal.

If this is for everyday use I would go with a gas grill.

Thanks for the advise fellas. I dont think the Egg is for me. I will use whatever grill i choose probably at least twice a week. I really dont want to go to Best buy or Sears because they rip you off IMO. I am shoppig online and around town here in memphis for a dealer who is not an everyday name ie sears and best buy. Still wanting suggestions and advise on this subject. Gas or Charcoal ect....

Bringing up this thread again,

I'm in the market for a big green egg right now. Wife does not eat red meat and I think this would be the best one for both of us. If anyone knows where I can get one at a pretty decent price let me know.

Thanks,

Well,

Got the BGE on Wednesday and used it yesterday for the first time. All I can say is WOW the reviews were right. I got this because it said that this was good for smoking and grilling and that other meats cooked great on it as well. My wife does not eat red meat. The chicken I cooked on it yesterday was sooooooooo good. Very juicy and succulent, smoked well, better than any restaurant. This grill really lives up to its hype. I strongly reccommend it.
