CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS @ +3.5 over UCLA BRUINS

From The Mind Of The Controller

THE LINE

California comes off a 35-21 loss to Oregon St. on Oct 4th. Following one of the biggest wins in school history, a thrilling triple OT victory over rival #3 USC (the highest ranked team Cal had beaten since ?51!!) and playing their SEVENTH straight game, the loss was understandable. An August road loss to Kansas St. and narrow misses vs. Colorado St., and Utah (1st game for any of these players in altitude) are not incriminating losses in the slightest. UCLA is 4-2 (2-0 in PAC 10), however, close battles vs. then-ranked Colorado and Washington have lost their luster as both teams have since self-destructed.

UCLA INSIDER

Although winless Arizona is a different team since the dismissal of hated HC JOHN MACKOVIC, the fact was, that entering last week, they were DEAD LAST in Div 1 total offense. Surrendering 519 yards to this unit, led by true freshman Kris Heavner (began season 5th on depth chart!), raises a red-flag to us. Yes, leaving the ?A? game at home vs. the ?Mildcats? is excusable, however shoddy tackling, blown assignments, etc? showed signs of slippage. The unavailability of 1st team All Pac-10 SS JARRAD PAGE (shoulder) and possible loss of shutdown 6-3 225 CB MATT WARE (30 consecutive starts. Severe ankle sprain at end of 3rd qtr, could not return with Bruins trailing) are major hits, particularly facing the NCAA?s 3rd leading WR in GEOFF MCARTHUR.

Offensively, the Bruins are a whisker away from a full-blown QB controversy, if they are not there already. HC KARL DORRELL plan was to integrate MATT MOORE back behind center (won the job in spring, missed a month with leg bruise) however he was ripped from the UA game after a fumble his third play from scrimmage and INT on the eight play. He did not return. MOORE: "I don't know if they didn't put me in because I threw the pick, or because that's what they had planned. I don't really know how to take that."

DREW OLSEN did little to strengthen his tenuous hold on the starter?s job, failing to engineer a scoring drive in the games final 26 minutes, and is clearly looking over his shoulder, as Dorrell has yet to name a starter for this week. OLSEN: "Until they tell me different, I have nothing to say about this. It's out of my hands."

Whoever gets the nod, they?ll be taking snaps from backup redshirt frosh ROBERT CHAI, with starter C MIKE MCCLOSKEY done for the year. CHAI left last weeks game with a hyper extended knee, however did return and is expected to play, though not at full strength.

CALIFORNIA INSIDER

The Bears were running on fumes physically and emotionally vs. Oregon St., playing their seven straight game to open the season, the longest streak in Div 1. We expect the off week to do wonders for Cal, who has a strong history of coming off byes (9-3 ATS off a bye).

Senior TB ADIMCHINOBE ECHEMANDU is quietly the 2nd best back in the PAC 10 behind Beaver & future NFL star STEVEN JACKSON. He is averaging a gaudy 5.4 YPC, and his 147 yards vs. USC has the first time back broke for 100+ vs. the TROJANS vaunted front in 17 games. He is flirting with the single best season a Cal back has EVER produced (CHUCK MUNCIE?s 1975 season of 1,460). Facing a UCLA run stop that was gauged for 276 yards last week vs. UA feeble infantry, expect a big game from bruising 6? 225 lb ?ACE? ECHEMANDU.

During the bye week, HC JEFF TEDFORD emphasized the importance of fully integrating TE GARRETT CROSS into the offense. Not that CROSS hasn?t been involved ? his 7 receptions vs. USC was the most by a CAL TE in eight years ? however TEDFORD loves his size (6-5 240) and soft hands. He and Rodgers were teammates at BUTTE CC, and TEDFORD realizes he can further their exploit excellent rapport with one another.

CAL HC JEFF TEDFORD, who has tutored top 10 NFL QB draft picks Joey Harrington (#3), Trent Dilfer (#6), David Carr (#1), Akili Smith (#3) feels he has another budding superstar in Aaron Rodgers. Nursing ankle, rib, and finger (throwing hand) injuries vs. Oregon St., Rodgers had the worst game of young career, further embarrassed by posting the worst numbers by a Cal QB in 17 yrs! Tedford: ?Aaron?s a perfectionist. He takes great pride in being successful.'' ? Tedford expects Rodgers to bounce back in a big way, and so do we.

THE PLAY

During the off week, Tedford talked about bowl possibilities, suggesting they could potentially run the table their final six games. Off what he called ?"one of the most frustrating weeks I've ever had" (referring to the OSU game), look for Tedford to return home (lives 15 miles outside of LA) with a genius gameplan, akin to the one he unveiled vs. USC. With Rodgers looking to bounce back, and scintillating skill players MCARTHUR and ECHEMANDU, both LA natives, looking to show UCLA what they missed, anticipate the Cal offense exploding on a BRUINS stop unit that is questioning themselves after last week?s implosion and quite possibly missing their best two players.

A loss would set the Bears back two games in the conference race, and would impinge on the fertile recruiting ground Tedford calls home. It won?t happen. Cal will defeat UCLA for the fourth time in five meetings. Points are bonus.

UCLA REPORT
Hobbled Ware Will Be Spectator

By Mike DiGiovanna, Times Staff Writer

Cornerback Matt Ware's streak of 30 consecutive college starts, a run that began in the first game of his freshman year in 2001, will come to an end Saturday. The junior, one of the best pass defenders in the nation, will sit out the California game because of a sprained left ankle.

"I never want to miss a game, and I definitely don't want to miss this one," said Ware, who dressed for Wednesday's practice but did not take part in any drills. "At this point, I'd probably be doing the guys an injustice if I went out there."

When was the last time Ware, a two-way star at Los Angeles Loyola High, missed a game? "Never," he said. Not even in high school, Pop Warner? "No," he said.

Unlike a certain Baltimore Oriole infielder, Ware will not play Saturday for the sake of keeping his streak alive.

"I have a good thing going, and I don't want to go out there and set myself back further ? that would be stupid," Ware said. "I'll just try to get better for next week."

Ware, the first UCLA true freshman to start every regular-season game since freshmen became eligible in 1972, is confident he'll be able to return for the Oct. 25 game against Arizona State.

Senior Keith Short, a former Irvine High standout, will start in Ware's place against Cal, and Marcus Cassel will play more at cornerback.

Short expects the Bears to attack his side of the field ? that's what happens when you replace one of the Pacific 10 Conference's top cornerbacks ? but Coach Karl Dorrell said the Bruins won't make any major adjustments to compensate for Ware's absence.

"We're not the type of defense that will change if one or two guys get hurt," Dorrell said. "We have to play our system and hope the guys we plug in can do the job."

With the 5-foot-10, 185-pound Short and 5-9, 170-pound Matt Clark on the other side, the Bruins won't have much size on the corners. But the Bruins have confidence in Short, who will be making his second career start ? his first was in place of the suspended Clark against Illinois on Sept. 13.

"He's a solid player," linebacker Spencer Havner said of Short. "He had a great camp, and I thought he'd be our nickel back. He's real tough against the run and a great tackler."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Strong safety Jarrad Page, who sat out the Arizona game because of a sprained right shoulder, participated in contact drills and will play Saturday Dorrell and UCLA will host a reunion dinner Friday night and a pregame barbecue Saturday for players from the 1982, 1983 and 1985 Bruin teams that won Pacific 10 and Rose Bowl championships.

UCLA to me, isn't even that great. They have had a weak schedule home schedule in my opinion, and the best win out of there was a win against a 3-3 Washington. UCLA's offense hasn't impressed me one bit. I did like the +4, but now I see at some places it has dropped to +3. It also doesn't help when the Bruins offense is ranked 110 in the nation.

Good luck this weekend

My original impression was that I had negative feelings about Cal and their ability as a football club. I watched that game vs. Utah and they looked bad...even their coach of the year had a terrible game, the worst clock management I have seen.

But after reviewing the game a little closer and also the thought that UCLA should not end up very far over .500, with their uninspired offense and looming QB controversy...injuries to key defensive players...as well as value on the moneyline...CAL MONEYLINE +155 2 UNITS
