Three things Vic Carucci is looking for in tonight's preseason game

The 8 p.m. game is nationally televised, with ESPN is billing it as its "Monday Night Football" debut.

Tyrod Taylor's first preseason start: How will he handle a chance to make his strongest case yet to become the No. 1 quarterback for the regular season? He dazzled with the running and throwing he did in the preseason-opener against Carolina, prompting coach Rex Ryan and General Manager Doug Whaley to refer to the "magic" he displayed after replacing Matt Cassel. Now, Taylor must demonstrate that he can do much more than make long runs, something that's easier to do against backup defenders who aren't prepared to deal with it. The Browns? defense saw plenty of Taylor during two joint practices with the Bills and regularly faces a similar QB in practice in Johnny Manziel. Look for Cleveland to concentrate on keeping Taylor in the pocket, from where he has to show coaches he can be every bit as effective as he is when on the move.

Overcoming a severe shortage of backs and receivers: The injury list is long and contains all of the best offensive players on the roster. Tonight, we will get a heavy dose of, ?Who are these guys?? such as rookie running backs Ricky Seale and Branson Hill, and receivers Andre Davis and Tobias Palmer. It?s far from an ideal situation to evaluate the play of Taylor, who won?t have LeSean McCoy (hamstring) in his backfield or Sammy Watkins (tight glute) or Robert Woods (tight hamstring) or Percy Harvin (hip) to throw to. But as Ryan said, he and the rest of the decision-makers will need to do the best they can.

Ronald Darby?s rebound: The rookie cornerback had a rough night against the Panthers. He was targeted multiple times and beaten repeatedly, including once for a touchdown. His biggest problem was the same one he had at Florida State: not turning his head around in time to see the ball. Darby is a tremendous athlete with excellent speed. His instincts need work, which is hardly uncommon for a rookie. He can figure on getting more attention from the Browns? quarterbacks tonight.

Records: Bills 0-1 after 25-24 home loss to Carolina last Friday; Browns 0-1 after 20-17 home loss to Washington last Thursday.

The Browns and Bills had plenty of starters standing on the sidelines during joint practices Monday and Tuesday at St. John Fisher College, and it will be more of the same when the clubs meet up Thursday night in the second preseason game at FirstEnergy Stadium.

The Browns lost Justin Gilbert to a hip flexor on Tuesday night and receiver Terrelle Pryor to an aggravation of his hamstring injury on Monday night. By the time the Browns boarded the train for Cleveland on Wednesday afternoon, they had at least 17 players on the injured list.

But the Bills are just as banged up heading into the this nationally-televised clash on ESPN. Linebacker Ty Powell suffered a torn ACL during the first practice and is out for the season. Running back LeSean McCoy injured a hamstring on Tuesday night and will likely be out a couple of weeks.

Browns run defense against the Bills depleted backfield

The Browns' bolstered run defense should fare well against the Bills' injury-riddled backfield. In addition to McCoy, the Bills are without promising rookie running back Karlos Williams, who underwent surgery Monday for a non-injury related condition.

That leaves the Bills with two free agent rookies in the backfield in Bronson Hill of Eastern Michigan and Ricky Seale of Stanford, who was signed Tuesday.

Against the Redskins, the Browns were porous, surrendering 153 yards in all, including 42 yards and a 5.3-yard average to starter Alfred Morris and a 7.6-yard average to rookie Matt Jones.

But No. 12 overall pick Danny Shelton had a spirited effort Tuesday night and has something to prove this game after the disappointing numbers last week. Phil Taylor also got some action in the joint practices and might possibly get his first game reps.

"I definitely wanted to play more violently,'' said Shelton. "That's something that I practiced these past two days. I feel more prepared now. I feel more prepared for my second game. "(It's) Just coming off the ball more aggressive, using my hands more aggressively and block more aggressively That's just what makes up a great defensive lineman, and that's what I want to be."

Last men standing

The Browns secondary is depleted, with seven defensive backs sidelined with soft tissue injuries. Five of them are cornerbacks: Gilbert (hip flexor), Joe Haden (hamstring), Pierre Desir (hamstring), K'Waun Williams (abdominal) and Robert Nelson Jr. (hamstring). Two are safeties: Tashaun Gipson (calf) and De'Ante Saunders (calf).

Fortunately for the Browns, the Bills are without starting receivers Sammy Watkins (glute) and Percy Harvin (hip). But even backup receivers Robert Woods and Andre Davis scorched Gilbert for multiple catches Monday before he succumbed to the hip injury Tuesday night. The injuries leave nine-year veteran Tramon Williams as the only healthy starter, and he'll be paired with plenty of third- and fourth-teamers in rookie Charles Gaines, first-year pro Kendall James and former first-round pick Aaron Ross, who sat out all last season with a torn Achilles and looked rusty at St. John Fisher.

"We feel like we are close to getting some of our guys back, and also with the long break to Tampa, that is kind of a nice luxury to have. What is it, nine or 10 days to Tampa? We will get some of our guys back. We feel we will be much better off headed into that [game], assuming we can get through Thursday night pretty clean."
