The Buffalo Bills? defense will be the one unit in the house at full strength and will try to gauge its progress tonight against the Indianapolis Colts.

Both starting quarterbacks ? Peyton Manning and Trent Edwards ? will sit out the game, and the Colts? defense also has some significant injuries.

However, the inaugural game in the Colts? new Lucas Oil Stadium still could give the Bills? defenders a quality tuneup for the regular season.

While Manning?s absence is huge, the Colts? offense still has Pro Bowlers in receiver Reggie Wayne, running back Joseph Addai and center Jeff Saturday. Dallas Clark is one of the best tight ends in the league. And, let?s not forget Hall of Famebound receiver Marvin Harrison.

?They have a very effective offense,? said Bills coach Dick Jauron. ?They?re very comfortable in their scheme, they?ve run it for a long time, and they put a lot of pressure on you. They put themselves in the right play. . . . It?ll be a good test for our defense in terms of movement and disguise [by the Bills before the snap].?

The Colts? offense has ranked among the top five in scoring five straight years and among the top two in passing 10 straight years. The Bills? defense will see a lot of spread offense, which will be good preparation for the regular season.

?They?re obviously very talented, and they?re well-coached,? said Bills middle linebacker Paul Posluszny. ?What they do in the passing game, we?ll see other teams do that throughout the year, so it?s good to get reps against these guys because we?ll see similar offenses later on in the season.?

The Colts also run a lot of no-huddle offense, another test for the Bills.

?Generally you have to show them what you?re going to play [before the snap],? Jauron said. ?Even if you don?t show it, they?ve been very smart with their play selection.?

Replacing Manning will be Jim Sorgi, who is in his fifth season as Manning?s backup. Manning never has missed a game in 10 years. Sorgi, a Wisconsin product, has thrown 126 passes in mop-up duty, with six touchdowns and one interception.

The Colts? first-team offense has not produced a touchdown in three games this summer, but Sorgi has looked pretty good. The Colts? starting offense has played five series and produced three field goals, all on drives of at least 12 plays and 55 yards.

Sorgi is completing 64.5 percent of his passes.

The Bills? first-string defense has played just three series in two games. The Bills? starters have given up four first downs, forced two punts and had an interception.

Most of the starters for both teams are expected to play all of the first half and perhaps one series in the third quarter.

Posluszny, who missed 13 games of his rookie season to injury last year, is looking forward to extended action.

?I need the work, to be honest with you, especially after last year,? he said. ?Some older guys who have played six, seven, eight years, that?s not the case for them. I have relatively limited experience; I definitely need the work, and the more plays I can get in the preseason, the better.?

Starting in place of Edwards will be J. P. Losman, who has looked good this summer.

Losman has completed 11 of 14 passes for 92 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

The absence of James Hardy and Roscoe Parrish will give young receivers like Justin Jenkins, Stevie Johnson, Scott Mayle and Felton Huggins more of a chance to make an impression.

Jenkins, a special teams stalwart, is the favorite to win the No. 5 receiving spot on the squad.

?You want the coaches to have confidence in you,? Jenkins said. ?When someone goes down, you don?t want them to have to change the whole offensive game plan. You want to have their confidence so they can stick with what they?ve been working on all week, and have the confidence to put me in at any time, just as confident if they had Roscoe or James in there as well as Josh [Reed].?

Points hard to come by for Colts

The NFL's two dominant quarterbacks have been uncharacteristically dormant this preseason. So have their respective offenses.

With Peyton Manning idle and on the mend from surgery on his left knee, the Indianapolis Colts have chewed up turf with regularity -- 366.7 yards per game -- but treated the end zone like no man's land. Quarterbacks Jim Sorgi, Quinn Gray and Jared Lorenzen have combined for three touchdown drives in three games.

The New England Patriots can relate. Tom Brady has missed the Patriots' three preseason losses with a sore right ankle, and the offense has been a pain to watch. Backup QB Matt Cassell and his cohorts have managed four TDs, and two came in the fourth quarter of Friday night's loss to Philadelphia.

An Indy revival tonight against the Buffalo Bills in its first game at Lucas Oil Stadium must be achieved without any input from Manning. He still hasn't been cleared for full-speed practice -- he's limited to walk-through duties -- and there's no guarantee the NFL's two-time MVP will be ready for the Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the Chicago Bears.

So until Manning's back, Sorgi is the guy. He'll remain under center, and in the spotlight.

Despite prodding, Sorgi deflected questions aimed at determining whether he anticipates Manning being ready for the Bears.

"Well, I know he's not going to play (tonight),'' he said.

Next week, the Colts likely will start looking ahead to Chicago rather than prep for Thursday's preseason finale against Cincinnati. Then, Sorgi admitted, he'll concern himself with "how ready'' Manning is.

"It's a big deal to miss a couple of games,'' he said, considering the possibility of Manning's streak of 160 consecutive regular-season starts coming to an end. "But hopefully it's not as big a deal as people think.

"Hopefully I can go out there and win some ballgames and keep us on track so when he does come back we're still in the same spot we would be if he would have played. That's what I'm trying to do right now. I'm trying to get ready.''

Both starting units will see their most extensive action of the preseason tonight. Coach Tony Dungy wants the majority of the starters to play into the third quarter so they can re-acclimate themselves to playing the first half, going into the locker room at halftime, making adjustments, then playing again in the third quarter.

The Lucas Oil Stadium crowd should be treated to the first appearance of the preseason of safety Bob Sanders and defensive end Dwight Freeney, but its attention likely will be focused on the Sorgi-led offense. Three of the six drives Sorgi has engineered have consisted of at least 12 plays, but he has produced only two field goals.

"Jim's doing fine,'' Dungy said. "He's playing about like we thought he would. He's under control. He's managing things well, handling protections, getting us in the right plays.''

It's important, tight end Dallas Clark said, for Sorgi to "play within himself . . . and realize until Peyton gets healthy that he's not going to replace Peyton. He's not going to make the amazing throws that Peyton (makes).

"But he can go out there and lead the offense and still go out there and be effective and move the ball down the field, and that's exactly what he's been able to do. He's shown a lot of great things out there, a lot of maturity, a lot of composure.''

Bills Daily:

Bills Daily:

Sunday PM August 24, 2008

Bills Hope To Avoid Injuries: This is the "biggest" of the four preseason games as the starters will play one half and maybe into the third quarter to get used to coming back out of the lockerroom to hit the field. The main thing is to come out of the game healthy. There have been a rash of injuries this weekend in the NFL and the Bills hope to avoid being the latest victim. They are going in not totally healthy already with Trent Edwards, Matt Murphy, Roscoe Parrish, Derek Schouman, and James Hardy sidelined. Hardy didn't even make the trip back to his home state.

Bills vs the /Colts: What to Watch For

The Buffalo Bills have made the trip to Indianapolis, where they are set to take on the Colts in tonight's pre-season game at the newly constructed - and absolutely gorgeous - Lucas Oil Stadium. The Bills will be without three key players - QB Trent Edwards, WR James Hardy and WR Roscoe Parrish - for this matchup, and the Colts are missing some starters as well, most prominently QB Peyton Manning.

Despite the starters missing the one pre-season game that's important to a team's growth - especially a team as young as the Bills - there will still be some positional battles and players in unique positions that we'll be keeping an eye on. We sincerely hope that you'll join us for tonight's open thread; here's what we'll be watching for:

Hamdan vs. Baker: It has become excruciatingly obvious that the Bills will be relying on J.P. Losman as a starting option at some point during the 2008 season. With that in mind, it's probably high time to start paying a bit more attention to the battle for the team's third quarterback spot raging between Gibran Hamdan and Matt Baker. One of these guys might actually be our primary backup for stretches during this season. It is prudent, therefore, to know a bit more about these two players.

Dwayne Wright: He's 2/2 this pre-season; unlike in baseball, that's not a good thing - Wright has fumbled in each of this pre-season's two games. Rookie sixth-round pick Xavier Omon is far more than just a challenger to Wright's job as the third back now. Wright has looked good running the ball, but he needs to protect the rock, or he won't be a part of this final roster.

Jenkins, Huggins and Johnson: We can only guess, but we're predicting that Josh Reed - due to the problems he's had with his lower back - won't play as much as the rest of the starters tonight. Lee Evans might not see a huge work load either, though he's expected to play much of the first half. With Hardy and Parrish out, we're going to see a lot of playing time for the three receivers fighting for one to two spots - Justin Jenkins, Felton Huggins and rookie Steve Johnson. The time is now for them to prove that they belong on this team.

Langston Walker: Dwight Freeney is making his first start of the pre-season tonight for Indianapolis, and with that, Walker faces by far his stiffest challenge since his move from right to left tackle. Walker handled Jason Taylor relatively well in Washington, but Freeney steps the challenge up a notch. We're expecting Ron From NM to keep an eye on #68, but we'll be watching closely as well.

Demetrius Bell: See Walker, but substitute Freeney's name for any of a number of the Colts' reserve ends who have ridiculous speed, most prominently rookie Marcus Howard. I'm very intrigued with this kid, as most of you know, and he'll get tested tonight.

Williams vs. Johnson (vs. McCargo?): Apparently, there's a battle raging for the starting tackle spot next to Marcus Stroud, and the two main combatants are Kyle Williams and Spencer Johnson. The winner of the battle's title may in reality be only a figurehead position, but we've spent enough time with our eyes glued to Marcus Stroud this pre-season to know he's legit; it's time to get more familiar with his running mates.

Angelo Crowell: Buffalo's starting strong-side linebacker makes his 2008 pre-season debut tonight. Will he look rusty? How does he look in pass coverage? How will he operate next to, in essence, two new teammates in Paul Posluszny and Kawika Mitchell? Well, that's why we're watching him tonight.

Cornerback rotation: The third pre-season game is followed swiftly by initial roster cut-downs and the fourth pre-season game - this coming Thursday against the Lions - so Buffalo's cornerback battle is about to get furiously heated. Ashton Youboty will again get most of our focus, but we're expecting Leodis McKelvin to take a step forward in the competition tonight as well.

Tonight, Lucas Oil Stadium will host its first NFL game. Sure, it?s preseason, but it?s still a milestone. Remember the first four years of the decade? We didn?t know whether the Colts were going to be in Indianapolis for much longer. It seemed imminent that they would move to Los Angeles. In late 2004, they announced that we were getting a new stadium, and here it is. What was once a dream is now a reality. We have the best stadium in the NFL. We aren?t watching the Colts play in a bubble anymore. Lucas Oil Stadium is finished.

Buffalo Bills: 1-1
Leading Passer: Trent Edwards, 122 yards
Leading Rusher: Xavier Omon, 60 yards
Leading Receiver: Roscoe Parrish, 69 yards
Leading Tackler: Ashton Youboty & John Wendling, 13 tackls

Indianapolis Colts: 1-2
Leading Passer: Quinn Gray, 367 yards
Leading Rusher: Mike Hart, 92 yards
Leading Receiver: Jacob Tamme, 121 yards
Leading Tackler: Jordan Senn, 20 tackles

3 Colts Players To Watch

Dwight Freeney: He?s back and hopefully better than ever. It feels like forever since we?ve seen Freeney play. Now his Lis Franc injury is healed and hopefully has no chance of reinjuring. Now we need to see if he has lost a step or not. For a speedy defensive end, injuring a foot can be the worst possible kind of injury. If he still has his spin move, he will be able to dominate again. If he doesn?t, I think we lost a lot of money with his contract.

Bob Sanders: He?s back and hopefully better than ever. Bob Sanders hasn?t crushed someone for a while, and I?m sure he is dying to do so. I feel sorry for the Bills running backs. They are going to be demolished by Sanders tonight. I?m never concerned about Sanders? offseason surgeries. As long as he is playing, the Colts have one of the three best defenses in the league. Bob Sanders? importance is unfathomable. This team needs him on the field, so hopefully he will be 100% healthy. Tonight we can see if he is back.

Charlie Johnson: Mike Pollak is hurt, so that means Charlie Johnson is the starting right guard. Charlie Johnson was awful last year, and we need some protection for Manning if he is still frail against the Bears. Johnson has to look good tonight or else I am all for giving Jamey Richard his starting job.

Bills Players To Watch

JP Losman: Trent Edwards is injured, so that means JP Losman will be starting this game. Losman was terrible when he was a starter, and the injury-depleted Colts defensive line needs to get some pressure on him if they want to stop the offense.

Xavier Omon: You may not care about him. I don?t really care about him. However, he is really good on NFL Head Coach 09, so I will be paying attention to him.

Leodis McKelvin: McKelvin is one of the best rookies this season and a favorite for Defensive Rookie of the Year. He?s been returning kicks and already has a touchdown. On defense, he has five tackles. McKelvin is good, and it will be a good test for Sorgi, Gray, and/or Lorenzen.
