Just curious what you guys have to say about getting blackout drunk. Lately since I started drinking hard liquor again, almost everytime I drink I get blackout drunk. Not where I pass out, but where I actually don't remember the last hour or so of my night.

Example was last night. I dont know what happened once I got to my buddys house after drinking alot at home and at a party. I have no recollection of who drove me home, when I got home, ect. Its kind of scary, but nothing bad has happened yet.

Apparently I blew out a powerstrip and almost killed our power about 2 weeks ago when I was blackout drunk, but I don't remember that, my brother had to inform me.

Im just curious as to if this happens to you guys and what you think of it. Im kind of scared to be honest and think I should tone it down, but on the other hand, I don't really care that much.

Im not drinking very often, maybe 1-2 times a week.

blackout drinking is a sign of alcoholism.

you should probably cut back or die maybe.

I remember one time waking up and not remembering how I got home. I forgot what happened to my car. I get up and look out the window and my car was parked on the lawn by a tree.

kind of have to reassess whats important to you when that happens.:SIB

Blackouts

WHAT IS A BLACKOUT?

A blackout is not associated with normal or healthy alcohol use.
It is a chemically induced period of amnesia that can last for seconds, minutes, hours, and/or days.
It is not the same as passing out (a loss of consciousness that sometimes occurs as a result of excessive drinking or drug use).
A blackout does not inhibit the movement of the individual during his/her daily activities. It will, however, prohibit the natural development of memorable life experiences.

TWO TYPES OF BLACKOUTS

1) En Bloc, which has a beginning and an end containing lost time, recollection, and apprehension.
2) Fragmentary, exists when the individual is unaware of a memory lapse until he/she is told about an event; produces a hazy memory which returns more fully when the individual is drunk again.

WHO EXPERIENCES BLACKOUTS?

Non-alcoholics and alcoholics.
A person who gets drunk once in his or her lifetime may experience a blackout.
Non-alcoholics or normal healthy drinkers are extremely frightened by a blackout and will reevaluate his or her alcohol use patterns. Increased tolerance and blackouts are signs of Early Stage Alcoholism.
Frequent blackouts are experienced by individuals who have increased tolerance, lose control often, drink until drunk, sleep or pass out, and/or crave alcohol.

WHAT CAUSES A BLACKOUT?

Blackouts seldom occur with moderate, non-alcoholic drinkers.
There is no universal pattern of blackouts. Some drinkers experience them some do not, some experience them early in their drinking, others later, and finally some experience them frequently while others infrequently.
Cause is associated with: gulping drinks, extended drinking over long periods of time, fatigue, no food, and old age.

MECHANISMS OF BLACKOUTS

No one knows exactly how or why blackouts occur, and it is difficult to research due to human ethics. Therefore, much of what we know relies mostly on self-reports. However, some research conducted tells us about the memory (immediate, short-term, long-term) of persons experiencing blackouts.
Blackouts usually occur during the short-term phase.
Alcoholics, even when drunk, can recall in immediate memory (.30 sec.). However, when asked again in short-term memory and he or she cannot remember, then it is lost and never makes it to long-term memory.
Once an item gets into long-term memory alcohol has little effect.

BLACKOUTS PROLONG DRINKING ALCOHOLICALLY BY STRENGTHENING ONE'S DENIAL SYSTEM

Since memory is affected an excuse or alibi is provided for the blackout drinker.
He or she does not remember, therefore, it did not happen.
When an event that occurred while an individual was drunk is described in detail, the person denies it and attributes the description to exaggeration.
This denial leads to confusion, guilt, shame, and a progression into the disease of alcoholism.

"People who drink on an empty stomach or gulp their alcohol have higher rates of blacking out," he says. "Therefore, less efficient variants of genes involved in metabolizing alcohol could predispose people to blackouts. We also know that alcohol has effects on systems in the brain that are involved in memory formation, so it is likely that genes whose products are components of those systems may be contributing to the risk for blackouts."

As is the case for alcohol-dependence, Nelson says that many genes probably contribute to the risk for alcohol-related blackouts. He also expects there will be overlap between genes that contribute to risk for becoming alcoholic and genes that predispose a person to blackouts.

What's certain is that the more a person drinks, the more likely they are to suffer blackouts or to become alcohol-dependent. Those who reported drinking to intoxication and binge drinking also were more likely to report blackouts.

"If you drink enough, you are likely to either black out or pass out," Nelson says. "It has been reported that individuals who can drink large amounts of alcohol without passing out are predisposed to becoming alcohol-dependent and to having blackouts."

The Alcohol Blackout will show you how to recognize the person in a blackout, how to deal with him/her while unconscious, and the immense and unrecognized impact of blackouts and their actions on Society and the Law.

Kevin Price drove the wrong way on the Garden State Parkway which led to the death of five people in a head-on collision. Michael Newbury awoke with a bloody hammer in his hand, the mutilated body of his girlfriend nearby. Paul Cox allegedly entered a Larchmont, NY, home where he formerly lived and stabbed a sleeping couple to death.

None of these people remembers doing any of these acts for which they were sentenced, nor did they intend to or want to commit these crimes. They couldn't stop themselves because they were in an alcohol blackout, one of the more common effects of drinking, suffered by million on any given day.

People in a blackout do not forget what happened, as widely believed. They will never remember, because alcohol blocked their ability to form memory.

Yet their pre-blackout memory remains intact, enabling them to walk, talk, drive, travel, quarrel, get into fights, wield a knife or hammer?and never know it. There are reports of an airline pilot flying passengers cross-country and a physician performing surgery while blacked out.

Blackouts devastate individuals and families, and the price tag is enormous. Yet the police and courts, doctors and hospitals, know little or nothing about them. Blackouts have fallen through the cracks of medicine. The research most often cited is 35 years out of date and does not reflect current neuroscience. Such neglect and misrepresentation can no longer be tolerated.

Geezus man there are only 7 days in a week!

If you say 1-2 I am guessing it is more like 3-4.

This have anything to do with the girl?

You need to quit, and NOW. I think you realize this you just want some confirmation. You are definitely an alcoholic.
