"the bunker"
an old post

an old post

from bob`s 100th birthday....i think it`s apropos....

a lot of the real young guys on the forum might not get it...but this guy was selfless when it came to out servicemen and our country....

"in a time when the martin sheen`s,michael moore`s,susan sarandon`s and sean penn`s rule the day,it did this guy`s heart some good to see a salute to bob hope on his 100th annivarsary.....

a guy who set his self importance on the back burner for over 60 years.....set aside his politics ....and demonstrated his unselfishness and used his celebrity to entertain american troops all over the world during wartime and peacetime alike.....

he didn`t have to do it...he`s an enormously wealthy and famous man.....

but,bob hope came from a different, less spoiled and priveleged time in american history.....from a time when the people felt fortunate to be american....and didn`t take everything for granted....

my uncle was in ww2 and was lucky enough to attend one of bob`s troop`s performances.....you said something bad about bob hope, you might as well take your jacket off and step outside....it meant that much to him....

thank you,bob....for being more concerned for your brothers than for the spotlight......for putting your own personal beliefs, whatever they may have been,on the back burner so you could make it a little better for your countrymen who were in harms way, like it or not.....

for not being so self absorbed.... for not thinking you know what`s right for everybody.....for serving your country in the best way you knew how....for giving back.....

to hear my uncle tell it,thanks bob hope.......a true american hero.....i have to agree...

would be nice to see a celebrity step forward and fill the void....unfortunately,in today`s strange atmosphere in hollywood,it would probably be career suicide...

When I heard the news yesterday morning I was saddened but commenting that his body finally had realized what many of us had thought for the last few years. After watching the Biography on A&E late last night, I was sniffling like a baby.

I know we all think of 100 years as old but it really hit home in the perspective that this was a man who had seen the entire history of man in flight from the Wright Brothers to the space shuttle. He was a boy at the age of understanding when the Titanic sank. This was a man who had seen and/or participated, in his own wonderful way, in all of the major conflicts since the Civil War. To see he and his wife (who's no spring chicken herself) climbing into helicopters and hummers in the middle of the desert and performing in the first Gulf War at an age where many of us will be drooling and wearing Depends was incredible!

He wasn't that great a dancer or singer. His jokes were corny. He performed in numerous movies but never won an Academy Award..... but he won the hearts of America.

Thanks for the memories, Mr. Hope.

vanurse,

i also saw that bio on hope last night & felt moved when they were talking about how hope & his crew dealt with the wounded soldiers.
i also heard, i don't know if it was on that bio show, that when hope went to enlist for ww2, fdr told him that he would serve our country better by entertaining the soldiers then by fighting.

he was really a great american!!
