I have declared an official day of mourning for Bearcat fans all over the world and elsewhere. Some wacky, relatively new university president who thinks she is going to turn the University of Cincinnati into the Harvard of the Midwest has forced Huggie bear out as coach of my beloved Bearcats.

This aggressive pseudo-intellectual has had her sights set on Huggins since she arrived in the Queen City in the summer of 2003. I don't think she realizes that without the last 16 years of Huggins basketball, my alma mater would not have been invited into the Big East. Bob turned this program around singlehandly and this is the thanks he gets.

My best to him as he will surely succeed wherever he lands. In addition, during the 16 years he was here, his recruits and players significantly increased the workload of the local criminal defense bar. So his recruits looked like life long members of the Crypts, he got the job done. All kidding aside, he elevated the program to a top 20 program and today gets shitcanned.

I hereby renounce any and all loyalty to UC. I have now become (gulp), a buckeye fan.

Bearcats in a huddle with Huggins

Huggins tells one of his players...

"You cover #24. Cover him close".

Player says...

"Who's he play for?"

This thread is too funny. Though I have a little sympathy for Huggins. They will have to go a while if and before they can duplicate his success. But as all universities have to decide, at what cost. At least give credit to the school for having the guts to do it.

I think you can look at Cincy getting rid of Huggins in 2 ways. His DUI,his asst coach getting busted for the same thing. All his players that got busted over the years. The nickname among the coaching circles and others was Huggy's "CrimeKats".
I can't remember all the names of his players.I do remember Little.I think he tied up his roommate with tape and burned him.I know he got suspended but didn't miss any games.[am I right Eddie??]
Also the graduation rate of his players. He had a few yrs back a ZERO % rate.I think it got better in the past few yrs.But sometimes those stats are BS.Players that got there degree's after aren't considered.Players in the NBA,kids that leave early, etc.
I got to see Huggy at 2 or 3 basketball clinics and he was funny.Of course a great recruiter but I'm not sure anyone could teach or coach transition and secondary break better.
His pressure defense, fast break and then secondary break.Secondary break is hardly ever talked about by TV analysist.
Bearcats ran it during games like a clinic.I would tape his games on TV and show it to my teams.
Huggy got little credit on breaks but they weren't 2-1's or 3-2's or guys just free lancing. If a player didn't have a layup everyone ran to spots on the break. The 2nd pass or 3rd was the secondary break. And they got great % shots off it.

Anyway this is my 2 cents.I'm mixed.Hate to see him go but understand why they did it.I'm sure he'll land at another school or go pro.The sad part is they go into the Big east this yr because of him and he's not there.Kinda like Moses almost getting to the "promised land" but Joshua coming in for the save.

I believe it was Donald Little. No doubt Bob recruited kids who could play basketball and/or athletes not necessarily students. Face it, the ghetto kid who had both brains and athletic ability given a choice between Cincinnati and Duke, NC, Kentucky, Kansas, et al is gonna go to one of the other schools. Huggs just got the kids from the ghetto without the brains but with the athletic ability.

The irony though, is that is just what they asked him to do when they hired him in 1989. They hired him to open a new arena and return the program to where it was in the early 60's. He did that plus gave these kids who otherwise had absolutely no chance, some chance. And now, because the new chancellor wants to head in a different direction, boom, he gets a swift kick in the butt.

Sorry, but he could have gone to the Heat in the mid 90's or the Clippers or at least one other major university (WVA). He stuck with UC. And this president who has been in office less than 2 years has successfully gotten rid of the head football coach (Minter, although I think Dantonio is an improvement) and the head basketball coach.

I hope UC is prepared to take a major hit in the wallet from alumni as well as being the doormat in the Big East for the forseeable future.

cinncy will pay big time. no more guaranteed ncaa bids,20 wins per year, and great teams. huggins produced all 3 or 2 of 3 every year i can remember. had not martin broke a leg- huggy may have a ncaa title as well. the big east conf will help recruting, but it will harder to win vs playing in the fake conf know as conf usa. :sadwave:

but hey, screw cinncy - i'm a memphis fan. :tongue

It's just a very unfortunate scenario for UC and for Bob. I know Bob. He's the only 'celebrity' I know. I know his dad well. Legendary high school basketball coach. I know his brother Larry...who played at Ohio State....and his brother Harry. All went to my high school. They're a good family. Bob's a good guy.....he's just fiery like his dad. Everyone makes mistakes.....but when you're that huge in the public eye...it hurts worse for some than others. he's one of the top 10 college basketball coaches in the country. He hasn't seen his last final four......guranteed.
