Boise St. at Fresno St.

Following a pair of dominant wins on the smurf turf, Boise State (2-0 straight up, 2-0 against the spread) is poised to go on the road for the first time when it opens WAC play Friday night in Fresno.

Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened the Broncos as 10-point favorites with a total of 54. As of early Thursday afternoon, most betting shops had Boise St. installed as a 7 ?-point ?chalk.? Fresno St. (1-1 SU, 1-0 ATS) is plus-240 on the money line (risk $100 to win $240).

Chris Petersen?s program has become the gold standard for non-BCS schools and appears on its way to possibly earning a berth in a BCS bowl game like it did in 2006. On Petersen?s watch, BSU has compiled an incredible 37-4 SU record to go with a 23-15 spread mark.

The Broncos started the season by destroying Oregon 19-8 as three-point home favorites in a game that wasn?t nearly as close the final score indicated. They didn?t allow the Ducks to get a first down until the third quarter.

And that?s where we see the progress made by Boise St., which has always been a juggernaut offensively. Now the Broncos are playing outstanding defense. That unit was on display last week, dealing Miami (OH.) a shutout in a 48-0 win as 40-point favorites.

The Ducks mustered only six first downs and 152 yards of total offense against BSU. The RedHawks produced just 194 net yards. By my math, that has the Broncos allowing just 4.0 points and 173 yards per game.

Fresno St. started the season by destroying UC Davis 51-0 in a non-lined affair. In Week 2, the Bulldogs went to Camp Randall and returned home with a heartbreaking loss to Wisconsin by a 34-31 count in double overtime. Although Pat Hill?s team came up shy of knocking off yet another BCS school on the road, it did hook up its backers with winning tickets as a nine-point road underdog.

Throughout Hill?s 13-year tenure in Fresno, the Bulldogs have lived by the mantra of ?anybody, anytime and anywhere.? On that note, they have been to the nation?s toughest venues and held their own more often than not. Hill has outright wins at Oregon, at Colorado, at Wisconsin, at Washington, at UCLA and at Kansas St. on his resume.

But those non-conference games have seemingly taken their toll on the Bulldogs, who often invade the top-25 rankings in September only to fall apart in league play. After winning at Rutgers and at UCLA last season, the Bulldogs limped to a 4-4 record against WAC foes and finished fifth in the conference.

"I really feel like Pat Hill's Fresno St. program has gone soft in recent years," "They just don't have the toughness they've had in the past anymore."

Fresno has lost seven of the last eight head-to-head meetings against Boise St. These teams were tied at 10-10 late in the second quarter of last year?s encounter, but the Broncos responded with 51 unanswered points en route to an easy spread cover.

FSU has to be disappointed about coming up short in its upset bid against the Badgers. The Bulldogs had more yards (468-413) and first downs (24-19) than Wisconsin, which had as many as 40 players with flu-like symptoms as recently as the Tuesday before the game.

For the most part, Hill has to like what he?s seeing from junior quarterback Nate Colburn, who came into the year having attempted just five career passes. Colburn has completed 27-of-45 passes for 450 yards and five touchdowns. The blemish on his numbers is four interceptions, including one on the first play of double OT. However, Colburn made several clutch throws to force that second extra session.

Petersen is certainly thrilled with the play of his sophomore QB, Kellen Moore. After a fabulous freshman campaign, Moore has just picked up where he left off. To date, he has connected on 64.8 percent of his passes with a 5/1 touchdown-interception ratio.

His favorite targets are Austin Pettis and Titus Young. Pettis has made 10 receptions for 183 yards and two touchdowns, while Young had hauled in 11 catches for 160 yards and two TDs. D.J. Harper has emerged as the go-to guy on the ground, rushing 32 times for 177 yards and two TDs.

ESPN?s coverage of ?Friday Night Lights? will start at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

--Since the start of the 2000 campaign, Boise St. has won 100 of its 117 games played.

--Since nearly shocking top-ranked USC late in the 2005 season, Fresno St. has an atrocious 12-28 spread ledger.

--Since 2004, Fresno St. is 1-5 ATS in six games as a home underdog.

--Boise owns a 7-7 spread record in 14 games as a road favorite during Petersen?s tenure.

--Going against Moore and Boise's prolific aerial attack, Fresno St. might be without safety Lorne Bell. "The Human Missile" is "questionable" after leaving last week's game with a strained MCL.

--California?s trip to Minnesota as a 14-point road ?chalk? is eerily similar to the same spot it faced in Week 3 last year. The Bears went to College Park to face Maryland in a noon Eastern game as 14-point road favorites. The Terrapins jumped out to a 28-6 lead and eventually captured a 35-27 win as double-digit home underdogs. This time around, the game is once again a noon start, which is obviously 9:00 a.m. back in Berkley.

--As of early Thursday afternoon, most spots had Vandy as a nine-point home favorite for Saturday?s game against Mississippi State. Bobby Johnson?s team hasn?t been this rich a favorite against an SEC foe since Jay Cutler?s senior season in 2005. The Commodores were 11-point ?chalk? vs. Kentucky in that situation and lost by a 48-43 score.

--Baylor is favored by 10 for its home game against UConn. The Huskies captured a 31-28 win over the Bears last season, but Robert Griffin led his team to the easy spread cover as a 13-point underdog. Art Briles? squad enjoyed an open date after winning a 24-21 decision at Wake Forest in Week 1. UConn is coming off a 12-10 loss to North Carolina as a five-point home underdog.

BCS Busters

Boise State kicked off the season with a big win against Oregon to put it on the map as a legitimate BCS contender. Friday?s game at Fresno State could be the toughest test left of its remaining games.

Other than potentially tough games vs. Nevada and at Tulsa, Boise State?s schedule looks like it could be smooth sailing all the way to an undefeated season. It could be tough for the Broncos to move up in the rankings from here on, so winning by large margins will be important for Boise State the rest of the season.

Boise State domination

In 2001, Fresno State was ranked No. 8 and looking at a 13-0 season before losing to Boise State which ended up costing the Bulldogs a BCS Bowl. Since the start of the 2001 season, Boise State has gone 88-15 SU, 58-37-3 ATS, only losing three WAC games in that period (one coming against Fresno State in 2005).

The Broncos have won seven of eight games versus the Bulldogs by 24 points per game. Last year, these two were tied at 10-10 late in the second quarter before Boise State scored 51 unanswered points. The last three years, Boise State has won by an average score of 46-17 and out-gained the Bulldogs by an average of 471 yards to 289.

Key for Fresno State

The run defense will be the key for the Bulldogs if they want to pull off the upset against Boise State. In BSU?s last and only loss since 2007, the Horned Frogs of TCU ran for 275 yards and held the Broncos to 28 in the Poinsetta Bowl. TCU beat Boise State 17-16.

Boise State has averaged 276 rushing yards per game in the last three games vs. Fresno State but its run game has yet to take off this year, averaging just 145.5 yards per game and 3.3 per carry.

Defensive showdown

Boise State is usually recognized for its offense but the defense has been equally as impressive. The defense has allowed just eight points and 346 total yards in two games thus far. The Broncos have held four of their last 12 opponents without an offensive touchdown.

Last week, they shutout Miami (Ohio) and allowed just 194 total yards. They held the Redhawks without a single play of more than 13 yards. That game marked the 14th time in their last 28 games that the Broncos have held their opponent to 10 or fewer points.

Fresno State won its first game 51-0 vs. UC Davis (FBS) and held the Wisconsin Badgers to 17 points with 5:45 left in the fourth quarter but then allowed 17 points in remainder of regulation and overtime. The Bulldog defense gave up just 21.1 ppg in 2004 but has been in steady decline since as they gave up 31.1 ppg in 2008.

Keep an eye on?

Wisconsin had a swine flu outbreak last week leading up to the game vs. Fresno State. Forty-five players for Wisconsin (almost half the team) missed practice during the week leading up to the contest versus FSU. There has been no mention of Fresno State players catching it yet but it's something to keep an eye on.

Trends

Boise State is 7-1 both SU and ATS the last eight games in this series. Fresno State has not been a home dog of more than a touchdown since 2003. When tabbed as a home dog of a TD or more, the Bulldogs are 6-1 ATS since 1990 winning three of those games outright. However, FSU is just 1-6 both SU and ATS the last seven overall when getting points at home.

Since 1999, the Broncos have been a road favorite of a touchdown or more 34 times. The Broncos are 18-15-1 ATS in those games, however, they have lost only one of those contests straight up and that was at North Texas in 1999.

Line movement

The line opened with Boise State at -7.5 and has stayed in the range of -7 and -8 (currently at -7). The total opened 53.5 and rose to 54.5 before dropping again to a current 53.5.

Weather

The weather won?t be a factor in this game. The forecast is calling for hot temperatures, mid 80?s by gametime falling into the mid-to-low 70?s. There is no chance for precipitation and 5-10 mph winds.

Fresno State defense to miss key starter against Boise

Fresno State defense to miss key starter against Boise

Fresno State defense to miss key starter against Boise

The Fresno State defense will miss some bite against Boise State.

Bulldogs starting free safety Lorne Bell will miss the game against the Broncos with a knee injury that likely will sideline him a minimum of two weeks. The team also must monitor defensive end Chris Carter (finger surgery), who will play despite having surgery on his middle finger on Tuesday. Fellow defensive end Matt Akers is doubtful with a shoulder injury.

These are big blows for the Bulldogs, who have struggled to force turnovers each of the past two years.

This fall, the team has a minus 4 turnover margin after forcing just 13 in 13 games a season ago.

BetUS.com has Boise State favored by 7.5 points with the total set at 53.5. The Broncos have covered in eight of the last nine meetings with Fresno State. The consensus page says that 69 percent of bettors like Boise State to cover the spead.

Boise State on the road favorites

Boise State on the road favorites

Boise State opens defense of its WAC title and goes for its seventh crown in eight years with even higher ambitions. The Broncos have started in scintillating fashion with consecutive wins over Oregon and Miami-O and have their eyes pointed to another BCS berth if they can go undefeated and be impressive in its televised tilts. They will take to the road for their first conference game against a team noted for playing the good teams tough.

The Broncos are 54-2 and 35-21 ATS in WAC play since joining in 2001, with one of those straight up losses coming in 2005 at Bulldog Stadium 27-7. Fresno State coach Pat Hill has always placed great importance on certain games and evidently not others, as Fresno State has never won a WAC title in his 12 years. However, this one matchup the Bulldogs would love to have and get Fresno State on the home page of sports websites.

The Bulldogs almost knocked off the Big Ten?s Wisconsin Badgers on the road last Saturday. Fresno State held 21-7 lead as 7.5-point underdogs, but three Ryan Colburn second half interceptions kept Wisconsin in the game and the Bulldogs eventually lost 34-31 in double overtime. Coach Hill has expressed confidence his team will respond to bitterly disappointing loss, there is evidence to suggest otherwise with Fresno State 5-11-1 and plaintive 1-16-1 ATS of defeat.

Sports bettors are passing on various sorts of this kind of information.

Sportsbook.com opened the Bulldogs as 12-point underdogs and has moved them downward to +7.5 according to the action, with total of 53.5. Fresno State has lost seven of last eight SU and ATS, including last three by almost 30 points per game.

Boise State is 11-3 ATS after one or more consecutive wins against the spread and 6-0 UNDER in road games off a home blowout win by 28 points or more over the last three seasons.

Fresno State is 0-7 ATS after a playing a game where 60 total points or more were scored and 13-4 UNDER at after covering one or more wins spreads.

This is one of what is believed to be three road tests for Boise State, which will be played before a boisterous Bulldogs crowd. The Broncos are expected to win the game, yet are only 10-11 ATS as away favorites since 2005.

ESPN has the kickoff at 9 Eastern and in last eight WAC meetings; the winner has covered the spread by 14 points per game.

Friday, September 18th, 9:00 p.m. (et)

GAME NOTES: The Boise State Broncos take their act on the road for the first time this season, as they clash with fellow Western Athletic Conference member Fresno State on Friday night.

Boise State, now ranked 10th in the country, began the 2009 campaign at 14 and moved to 12 after defeating nationally-ranked Oregon in the opener, 19-8. A week later the Broncos dismantled Miami-Ohio on the blue turf, posting a resounding 48-0 decision as they picked up their 51st consecutive regular- season home win in the process.

For the Bulldogs, their mantra of taking on anyone, anytime came back to bite them this past Saturday when they made the trip to Madison to face Big Ten foe Wisconsin. After crushing UC Davis in the opener with a 51-0 thrashing, Fresno actually had to compete versus the Badgers and ended up on the short end of a 34-31 double-overtime decision.

Continuing on with their tough-minded non-conference schedule, the Bulldogs will be back out on the road next week to challenge nationally-ranked Cincinnati.

The relationship between these two squads dates back to 1977, with BSU owning a 7-4 record versus the Bulldogs following a nasty 61-10 thumping of FSU in last year's regular-season finale. Boise State has won three in a row over the Bulldogs and is already a commanding 6-1 in the series when the teams play on national television.

"Well, I think the result is what we liked, even though the process we went through wasn't exactly the way we wanted to get there," said BSU head coach Chris Petersen after the victory over the RedHawks. "There are some things that we need to focus in on, we're still a work in progress."

Leave it to coach Petersen to find flaws in a 48-point shutout as the running game accounted for three touchdowns and quarterback Kellen Moore threw for 307 yards and four scores. Of course, there was the one interception for Moore, the WAC Freshman of the Year in 2008, but not everyone can be perfect.

"It was nice to spread it around and get them all chances," Moore said of his efforts to distribute the ball down the field. "It really spreads out the field and forces them to cover everyone. That's really going to help us down the road. All three guys (Titus Young, Austin Pettis and Tyler Shoemaker) made some big plays today."

"I think our defense is still playing a smothering type defense," coach Petersen acknowledged. "Getting turnovers, and seeing as the game turned out as it did. I think that's very encouraging. I still think we can play a lot cleaner, and a lot better on offense."

Encouraging might be an understatement, given that BSU allowed the RedHawks a mere 194 yards of total offense and registered four interceptions. The squad came up with just a single sack, but overall the pressure served to set down Miami rather easily.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, having an easy go of it was not in the cards when they squared off against Wisconsin.

"That was a tough football game," commented head coach Pat Hill. "We had some turnovers that really hurt us and give Wisconsin credit, they were flawless with their ball security."

The Badgers made sure they took good care of the ball, which was especially important when you consider the team controlled the ball for less than two minutes in the fourth quarter.

When the Bulldogs were operating on offense, they put their trust in quarterback Ryan Colburn as the signal-caller converted 22-of-36 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns, but he was sacked twice and had three passes picked off, the last of those coming in the second overtime period to close out the contest.

Trying to find the bright side of traveling so far just to be sent packing with a loss, coach Hill had praise for both sides after the meeting.

"Our guys played hard and this was a tough environment. We came here to win the game and had our chances and just came up short. It was a great game and we've had some great games against Wisconsin every game."

"That was heartbreaking for sure," noted Colburn. "Give Wisconsin credit. They are good team and deserve credit for coming back, but we left too many chances on the field. It's disappointing for sure. We just weren't good enough."

Seyi Ajirotutu gave it his all as he grabbed six passes for 83 yards and two scores, while Devon Wylie collected five passes for 114 yards and a TD as well for the Bulldogs. On the ground the team relied again on Ryan Mathews who finished with 107 yards on 19 attempts.

From a defensive standpoint, FSU was paced by Ben Jacobs who logged a game- high 15 tackles against Wisconsin, while Chris Carter came up with both sacks for the unit.

Last season the Bulldogs had a serious problem with turnovers, more specifically, an inability to force enough to keep opponents on their toes. In 2008 Fresno State ranked eighth in the WAC and 107th in the nation with a turnover margin of minus-0.85 per game and already it is starting with the same theme in 2009 because after two games the Bulldogs are already down at minus-2.0 per game. Granted, Nico Herron had a big pick in the opener which he returned 94 yards for a score, but one has to remember the competition for that meeting.

Just a junior, Colburn is still learning the offense for the Bulldogs after spending so much time watching Tom Brandstater call the plays, so he is bound to have his share of miscues. He has completed 60 percent of his passes early on for 450 yards and five TDs, but those four picks are going to keep him from taking chances when they present themselves down the field.

As for the Broncos, Moore has stepped right back into the huddle and shown the same confidence that he had all of last year when he burst onto the scene. Moore has completed close to 65 percent of his passes for five TDs and just a single interception. What's more, the QB has made it a point to get both Young and Pettis into the action as much as possible as the two receivers have combined for 21 catches for 343 yards and four scores.

Having DJ Harper and Jeremy Avery coming out of the backfield to switch up the pace has done wonders for the Boise State offense thus far. Harper leads the group with his 177 yards and two touchdowns and Avery has managed another 93 yards. The latter could stand to boost his average per carry in order to level the field between himself and Harper, but it will take a couple of big runs and consistent efforts to lift him above the 2.7 yards per carry he currently owns right now.

Last season, BSU was tops in the conference and third in the nation with just 12.6 ppg allowed and this year the team is off to an even faster start, permitting only 4.0 ppg in the first two outings.

One would think the stranglehold the Broncos have on the WAC would be easing up by now, but early returns show a team that is functioning at an even higher level and is not afraid to march into Fresno and impose their will over the Bulldogs this week.

Predicted Outcome: Boise State 38, Fresno State 10
