Boise St. at Tulsa

With its BCS hopes and unbeaten record on the line, Boise State (5-0 straight up, 4-0 against the spread) comes off an open date to play at Tulsa tonight. ESPN will provide television coverage at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.

Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened the Broncos as eight-point favorites. As of early this morning, most books had Boise favored by nine or 9 ?. Sportsbook.com started the total out at 53 and had the Golden Hurricane at plus-290 on the money line (risk $100 to win $290).

Chris Petersen?s team continues to rack up victories galore on his watch. Since taking over for Dan Hawkins, the Broncos have won 40 of 44 games, compiling a 25-15 spread record during that stretch.

They opened the season with a dominant 19-8 home win over Oregon, followed by a 48-0 bludgeoning of Miami (OH.) as 40-point home favorites. BSU went on the road in Weeks 3 and 4, thumping both Fresno St. (51-34) and Bowling Green (49-14).

Tulsa (4-1 SU, 2-1-1 ATS) is coming off a 27-10 win at Rice as a 17-point road ?chalk.? G.J. Kinne completed 21-of-32 passes for 251 yards without an interception. He found A.J. Whitmore on a 39-yard scoring strike to give backers of the Golden Hurricane a push. Kinne also had a six-yard touchdown run.

The Texas transfer has connected on 64.1 percent of his pass attempts for 1,142 yards with a 10/2 touchdown-interception ratio. But Kinne struggled in Tulsa?s lone defeat, a 45-0 loss at Oklahoma. He threw two interceptions against the Sooners and had just 106 passing yards.

Damaris Johnson is the Golden Hurricane?s premier playmaker. The true sophomore has a team-high 20 receptions for 369 yards and one TD. Johnson had 245 yards of total offense in the win over the Owls and returned a punt for a score in a season-opening win at Tulane.

Boise sophomore QB Kellen Moore has been nothing short of sensational, completing 69.7 percent of his throws for 1,217 yards with a 13/2 TD-INT ratio. His favorite target is Austin Pettis, who has 28 receptions for 378 yards and six touchdowns. Titus Young has 26 catches for 330 yards and four TDs.

Jeremy Avery is carrying BSU?s rushing load, gaining 441 yards on 72 carries. He?s averaging 6.1 yards per carry with one touchdown. Avery, who also has a TD receiving, is getting most of the work since his back-up D.J. Harper went down with a season-ending injury.

Since 2003, Tulsa owns a 6-2 spread record as a home underdog. The Golden Hurricane hasn?t been a home ?dog since losing 62-21 to Oklahoma in ?07. The week before losing to the Sooners, it beat BYU by a 55-47 count as a 6 ?-point home puppy. Those are the only two home ?dog situations for Tulsa during Todd Graham?s three-year tenure.

Boise St. is already 2-0 ATS as a road favorite this year. The Broncos went 4-1 versus the number in similar situations last season.

Petersen?s team knows it has to stay perfect to get a BCS bid. A trip to the BCS Championship Game is highly unlikely but if teams galore go down like in 2007, the Broncos can be a part of the conversation if they collect a bunch of style points.

That will certainly be their thinking with a national-television audience tuning in tonight. Senior CB Kyle Wilson told the Associated Press, "We're definitely using this as a spotlight, statement game. We really want to get out there and just prove a point. There are not many games you can play with a spotlight like this game."

Tulsa will be missing senior free safety Charles Davis, who is out for the season after sustaining a severe knee injury in Week 3 against Oklahoma. Davis was the team?s fourth-leading tackler at the time and finished ?08 with 78 tackles and a pair of interceptions.

On the other side of the ball, Graham?s team will be without OT Tyler Holmes. The true sophomore, a pre-season All C-USA selection, has a broken leg and is out indefinitely. Holmes will be replaced in the starting lineup by sophomore Brandon Thomas

--South Carolina owns a 10-4-1 spread record as a road underdog during Steve Spurrier?s tenure. The Gamecocks are 17-point underdogs Saturday at Alabama.

--Ga. Tech will be a home underdog for the first time under Paul Johnson when it hosts Va. Tech in Saturday?s crucial ACC showdown at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Most books had the Hokies as three-point road favorites this morning.

--Idaho remained perfect for our purposes by winning 29-25 at San Jose St. as a 5 ?-point road underdog. The Vandals are now 5-1 SU and 6-0 ATS. They have been underdogs in every game this year, but that changes this week vs. Hawaii. The Warriors were ?dogs in the 9-10 range early this morning.

More than one person circled this game as a potential downfall for an unbeaten season for Boise State. The Broncos have only played one real complete game, which was against Bowling Green, winning 49-14. Boise State?s (5-0, 4-0 ATS) quest for perfection continues in Tulsa, where another offensive-minded team is awaiting.

It will be of interest to see the mood of the Broncos after a sleep-walking 34-16 performance against Cal-Davis at Boise, gaining a season-low 101 yards on the ground.

?I?m frustrated with a couple different phases,? Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. ?Too many penalties, when you can?t score inside the 4 and 5 yard line when you have multiple tries, that?s frustrating.

?We?ll have their attention without question here and get a few things corrected.?

Coach Peterson would never say publicly, but he knows this is great opportunity to showcase his team for the pollsters, to a national cable audience against a 4-1 Tulsa club that has respectable reputation nationally.
Boise State?s 21st ranked defense is sure to be tested by Tulsa, though this is not the offensive juggernaut of the last few seasons. Tulsa offense averages 414.2 yards per game (35th), however that is against defenses that have allowed 413 YPG. In other words, the Golden Hurricane (3-1 ATS) is only average based on the competition.

Boise State needs to do a better job finishing scoring drives. They have scored touchdowns on just 16 of 27 red-zone trips, including six visits that resulted in zero points. The Broncos have covered the spread seven straight times and nine of last 11 and are 6-1 ATS in road games over the last two seasons.

Tulsa needs a fast start to grab the momentum, which in absorbing challenge since nobody has scored in the first quarter against Boise State. Quarterback G.J. Kinne, ranks seventh in FBS passer rating (don?t ask how that works) and has thrown for 1,142 yards with 10 touchdowns to only two interceptions. Tulsa has been balanced in getting into the end zone with nine rushing touchdowns and 11 through the air. The Golden Hurricane has three prime time contests ahead, but a win here brings a great deal of attention to team that is 6-2 ATS as home underdog since 2003.

Sportsbook.com has Boise State posted as 9.5-point favorites, but the Broncos are just 3-8 ATS in the first of two road games. Coach Peterson?s squad is 12-3 ATS vs. good teams outscoring opponents by 10 or more points per game on the season. Tulsa?s defense ranks 27th nationally at 299.2 yards per game and can?t afford a shootout since they are 3-13 ATS when they allow 28 or more points over the last three seasons.

These teams were WAC partners earlier this decade, with Tulsa 0-4 and 2-2 ATS. This is a rare treat for Coach Todd Graham?s squad and Tulsa is 7-3-1 ATS hosting Top 25 teams.

ESPN has the coverage commencing at 8 Eastern.

Eye on the prize

Tonight?s game should be the last major upset risk for a Boise State team set up for an undefeated season and a potential BCS bowl game. BSU?s opponents after the Golden Hurricane have a combined record of 16-21.

The Broncos didn?t play well in their last game, a 34-16 victory against UC Davis. The team had nine penalties and struggled to move the ball consistently against an inferior opponent.

As a road favorite, Boise State is 10-1 against the spreads the last three seasons and 11-2 in road games overall.

For Tulsa this game represents a chance to put them back on the map. The Golden Hurricane returned only five starters from an offense that averaged 47 points per game. They?ve eclipsed that mark once this season in a 56-3 win over Sam Houston State.

TU has been tested once this season when it lost 45-0 in Oklahoma. In that game Tulsa was outclassed, giving up six touchdowns to Oklahoma QB Landry Jones.

Golden Hurricane on defense

Tulsa has led the nation in total offense the past two years but this season it?s all about the defense. The squad has not allowed a rushing touchdown this season and has 19 sacks from nine different players. Outside of the Oklahoma game, the unit has held opponents to 36 combined points in four games.

That?s a stark difference from 27.9 points per game the stop unit allowed last season.

The Golden Hurricane will have their hands full with a Bronco unit that averages 214.3 rushing yards per game behind Jeremy Avery and Doug Martin. Not to be outdone, quarterback Kellen Moore is second in the nation in passing efficiency. The balanced attack has coach Chris Peterson?s group averaging 40.2 points per game.

Bronco busting

All of the publicity is for the BSU offense but the defense is also earning its keep. The defensive group is ranked 14th in total defense and 23rd against the pass.

The one issue the unit may have is that they don?t get pressure on the quarterback. They average 1.2 sacks per game, which is 96th overall.

Tulsa counters with quarterback G.J. Kinne and the 37th ranked passing attack. Kinne has a 161.7 passer rating and has thrown for 1,142 yards with 10 touchdowns to just two interceptions. Kinne throws to Damaris Johnson an average of four times per game with A.J. Whitmore and Slick Shelley also getting some receiving love as well.

Line movement

BetUS.com opened at +10 early this week and but is now dealing 8.5. The total stayed in place around 53.5.

Trends

Boise State is a covering machine going 4-0 against the spread this season in its four lined games. The Broncos have a history of being successful against the number. In the last three years they are 8-2 ATS when playing a team with a winning record and also 8-2 as a road favorite.

The Broncos have gone under the closing total in five of their last six games against Conference USA opponents.

The numbers aren?t as nice for the Golden Hurricane who are 15-15 against the spread over their last three seasons. They?re 2-1 ATS this year, but 0-1 as an underdog.

It?s surprising to see that a year after putting up prolific offensive numbers, the Golden Hurricane have gone under in all four of their lined games.

Weather

The weather for Wednesday night?s game calls for a high of 55 degrees with a 30 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms possible. The wind impact will be light at 7 mph.

(5) Boise State (5-0) at Tulsa (4-1)

Wednesday, October 14th, 8:00 p.m. (et)

GAME NOTES: Two of the most explosive offenses in college football collide in Oklahoma on Wednesday night, as the fifth-ranked Boise State Broncos drop in on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane for a non-conference bout at H.A. Chapman Stadium.

Boise State, which sports the top winning percentage of any team in college football since 2000 with a record of 103-17 (.858), last took the field on October 3rd and allowed UC Davis to remain a bit too close in a 34-16 decision. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Broncos and the 59th in the last 61 home games dating back to 2000.

This meeting marks the final non-conference outing for the Broncos before they get serious about defending their Western Athletic Conference crown. BSU is 1-0 in league play following a 51-34 defeat of Fresno State in the third game of the season. With that victory, the Broncos moved to an impressive 66-4 in their last 70 conference contests, the best mark of any program in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

As for the Golden Hurricane, it currently stands at 4-1 on the season, but was somewhat exposed by Rice in what became just a 27-10 win back on October 3rd in Houston. In the team's previous three victories they had scored no less than 37 points, but perhaps crushing submissive opponents did little to prepare Tulsa for an unsightly 45-0 loss to in-state rival Oklahoma in the middle of September.

Before moving to Conference USA, the Golden Hurricane was a member of the WAC, so these two teams shared a common thread previously. Unfortunately for Tulsa, playing against the Broncos has never been easy and the team is still searching for its first-ever win versus BSU. The most recent meeting took place in 2004 with the Broncos capturing a thrilling 45-42 victory to move to a perfect 4-0 all-time versus Tulsa.

Surprisingly, the Broncos didn't exactly run all over UC Davis in their last outing, something that wasn't at all a revelation for Boise State head coach Chris Petersen.

"I know this; every team on our schedule can beat us. No one wants to hear that, maybe even some guys in that locker room. If we don't show up with our 'A' game we are not going to be very good."

Without their 'A' game, the Broncos instead had to lean more heavily on quarterback Kellen Moore who threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns. Receiver Austin Pettis reeled in 10 balls for 129 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Titus Young finished with six catches for 83 yards and a TD. The surprising part of the game was the inability of the Broncos to come up with a sound and worthwhile rushing attack against a lesser opponent. BSU posted just 101 yards on the ground, a far cry from the 214 ypg the squad was averaging heading into the contest.

Permitting 16 points may not sound like a big deal, but for a Boise State program that was at home and is clearly the cream of the crop in the WAC again this season, it was not exactly what the defense had in mind. Not having Kyle Wilson on the field because of an injury suffered earlier in the week didn't help matters either.

"I don't know if it was exactly missing Kyle (Wilson)," defensive end Ryan Winterswyk said after a game in which he logged a blocked field goal attempt. "We just weren't clicking on all levels. He is a great player and leader of our defense. When he isn't out there, we kind of take a step back, but no matter what we need to play better."

Listed as probable this time around with his strained shoulder, Wilson could play an important role in this week's game if needed. Not only is he an option for kick returns, he is also the sort of impact player who sets the overall tone for the defense and his presence, or lack of, can be felt.

With Wilson in the lineup the Broncos are much more apt to perform like a group that is 13th in the nation in scoring defense, giving up just 14.4 ppg and 14th in overall defense, permitting 273.8 ypg.

Offensively, Boise is again getting the job done with a two-prong attack that can't be easily defended. The running game is humming along with 191.6 ypg, averaging better than five yards per attempt while players like Jeremy Avery (441 yards) and Doug Martin (192 yards, four touchdowns) try yo fill the gap left by an injured D.J. Harper (284 yards, three TDs). Moore is now second in the country in pass efficiency rating at 176.61, rather impressive given that he is only a sophomore and has stepped into some big shoes in a growing program that is trying to set a new standard among non-BCS schools.

Over on the other side of the field, Tulsa also had an offense that sputtered the last time out, needing 17 unanswered points in the second half to secure the win over Rice in a rain-soaked meeting earlier this month. A year earlier the meeting between these teams approached 100 points and more than 1,000 yards of total offense, so G.J. Kinne's 251 yards and one touchdown through the air ended up being more crucial than originally thought. Kinne also carried the ball 16 times for a net of just seven yards and a TD, while Jamad Williams picked up a team-best 72 yards and a score on 14 attempts.

In the second half Rice had just six possessions, the first five resulting in punts and the last going over to the Golden Hurricane on an interception by John Destin. Kaipo Sarkissian also had a strong game for the squad with his four tackles for loss and a sack, keeping the Owls' offense from mounting any real comeback bid.

At this point in the season the Tulsa defense has permitted a mere 95.0 ypg on the ground, but more importantly from the team's perspective, it has yet to surrender a single rushing score. However, much of that stat might have to do with the fact that the opposition has trailed Tulsa in most games and has had to resort to passing the ball in an effort to catch up.

Tulsa Head coach Todd Graham, who a few years ago had the BSU coaching staff over and shared ideas with coach Petersen, knows that this is going to be a very tough game.

"They're very good. They're very explosive on offense. Their quarterback makes everything work. He's a tremendous operator. He operates very well in the pocket and manages the offense very well. He does a lot of checks and things like that. They also move him out of the pocket. He can run with the football as well."

Kinne has similar numbers to those put up by Moore to this point in the season, converting 64.1 percent of his pass attempts for 228.4 ypg and 10 touchdowns, having just two of his 128 attempts picked off. Damaris Johnson stands as the most dangerous offensive weapon and special teams performer for the Golden Hurricane, recently being named the C-USA Special Teams Player of the Week as he recorded his third game of the season with at least 200 all- purpose yards. Heading into play last week Johnson was ranked fifth in the nation with an average of 198.8 ypg in all-purpose production.

Tulsa is averaging 32.8 ppg this season, but throwing out the shutout loss to Oklahoma and a 56-3 thumping of tiny Sam Houston State might provide a better indication of just where these team stands when being compared to the other programs in the conference, and the nation.

"It's going to be big and we're going to need them (the fans) out here," coach Graham said of the support he expects to get from the hometown crowd for this contest. "There needs to be a very loud and adverse place for Boise to come to. We've guarded our field very well in the last two-plus years that I've been here. We're 12-2 out here. We're going to need a great home field advantage and that's one of the things I'm excited about...It's the highest ranked team that we've played since I've been associated with the program. It's the biggest game that we've played."

But as enthusiastic as coach Graham and the fans might be for this game, trying to lock down the Broncos for four quarters is a task that no one has been able to accomplish this season, or for all of the 2008 regular-season for that matter. Expect BSU to continue to pile up the victories as they win a high-scoring affair this week on the road.

Predicted Outcome: Boise State 42, Tulsa 31

Slowing down Boise

Slowing down Boise

Boise State will bring one of the nation's most explosive offenses to Chapman Stadium for Wednesday's 7 p.m. game at Tulsa.

Mental and physical mistakes likely will be exploited, and the Broncos will provide a tough test for TU.

"Boise moves around a bunch on offense," TU linebacker Mike Bryan said. "The defense has to be real disciplined and read their keys."

The focus has been on avoiding the big play. Tulsa must not make life easier for the Broncos.

"No cheap touchdowns or one-play drives," Bryan said. "We have to stop the run and control the pass. If we don't give up any cheap touchdowns, we will be all right."

Tulsa has allowed a combined 29 points and two TD drives in its four victories this season.

Slow starts: Boise State hasn't allowed a point in the first quarter this season. But in back-to-back weeks, it hasn't scored in the opening 15 minutes of a game. Tulsa must have a quick start, quarterback G.J. Kinne said.

"That's very important," Kinne said. "We have to come out, have a great game plan and put some points on the board."

Running back Charles Clay said points could help energize a sold-out stadium.

"We need to get the crowd in it," Clay said. "But on the other hand, Boise State is very explosive on offense and we have to do whatever we can to score points."

TV talent: ESPN will bring a three-man broadcasting crew and on-field reporter to the game.

Rece Davis, Mark May and Lou Holtz will call the contest from the booth, and Todd Harris will handle sideline duties.

This is the second of four ESPN contests for the Golden Hurricane. The Oct. 21 game at UTEP will be shown on the network, as will the Nov. 15 contest against East Carolina.

TU: Three Storylines

TU: Three Storylines

by: ERIC BAILEY World Sports Writer

1. Don't leave points on the field
Tulsa had 25 of its first 27 offensive snaps in Oklahoma territory in a 45-0 loss. But two turnovers, a missed field goal and a punt resulted in no first-half points. TU cannot leave points on the field against Boise State. A touchdown is better than a field goal, a field goal better than nothing.

2. Avoid the big play
TU has been prone to defensive busts in big games, and has to avoid them against the Broncos. Defensive backs can't be fooled by play action or misdirection plays. Blitzes must get to the quarterback. Linebackers have to read and react with perfection. Boise will make the TU defense think.

3. Win the battle for hidden yards
Damaris Johnson will be the littlest player, but can play the biggest factor in kick and punt returns. Can Johnson pick up an extra 10 yards per return to make life easier for the offense? Can TU's kickers and coverage team keep Boise pinned on its side of the field and force longer drives?

TU takes aim at Boise State

TU takes aim at Boise State

Boise State has been a model team for college football's blue-collar class.

Non-automatic qualifers to the BCS world have to scratch, claw and almost beg for national recognition. The Broncos grabbed that respect in 2007 with a Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma that's well-remembered by many in these parts.

Tulsa coach Todd Graham has showered the Boise program with praise over the past 10 days. At the same time, he's injected belief in his Golden Hurricane football team that it can spring an upset over the nation's fifth-ranked team.

"We have great respect for them, but we're definitely not scared of them," TU quarterback G.J. Kinne said. "We're ready to come out and play."

An expected sellout crowd and national TV audience will witness Wednesday's game between Tulsa and Boise State. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Chapman Stadium.

For Tulsa, it's a shot at redemption. The Golden Hurricane seems determined not to let one embarrassing defeat ? the ego-bruising 45-0 setback at Oklahoma ? define its season.

"OU was a crucial loss, but we learned from it," Tulsa running back Charles Clay said.

This isn't the same Boise State program from the WAC days shared by both programs earlier this decade. The Broncos (5-0) are dominating all levels of competition and are 40-4 under fourth-year coach Chris Petersen.

The team's No. 5 ranking is the highest regular-season mark from a non-automatic qualifying conference. But while the college football nation analyzes the Broncos' merits for a national title game bid, Petersen is taking the standard one-game-at-a-time plan.

"At the end of the season, (rankings) mean something," Petersen said. "The only thing we're paying attention to is Tulsa, and so that's kind of a moot point around here.

"You can rank us wherever you want. You can rank us five or whatever. It doesn't have anything to do with what we're trying to get done right now."

Both programs, fair or unfair, always seem to have to answer "how good are they" questions. Last year, Tulsa had to defend its 8-0 start and has to do the same this year with a 4-1 record that includes wins over inferior competition.

Boise State has a victory against Oregon, but will have its share of critics when it hits WAC play. It will be overwhelming favorites in nearly all of its league games.

Graham said Wednesday will be a measuring stick game for his program.

"This has been a workman's group and they haven't been too flashy," he said. "We're sitting here 4-1 and we have this opportunity to see where we're at. And we'll find out where we're at because we're playing a good team."

Graham said that he wants to emulate Boise's philosophy and make TU a future program that's often discussed in the national picture.

Petersen threw praise back at the third-year Tulsa coach.

"Tulsa's done a great job," Petersen said. "In a lot of ways, we're trying to emulate them. Those guys score a ton of points, play great defense and they're winning as much as anyone out there. I think they've done awesome."

Sometimes, two extra practices can make a team hungrier for the next football game. TU seems to be no exception.

"This is an opportunity that doesn't come around too many times," Clay said. "We have to keep our heads on straight, stay focused and get ready for this opportunity."

TU?S HOME HISTORY AGAINST TOP 10 TEAMS
Tulsa is 2-6 against Top 10 opponents that have visited Chapman Stadium. The two victories have come against No. 10 ranked teams. Boise State is the first non-oklahoma school on this list since miami captured a 34-10 win over Tulsa in 1991.

Boise State 101

Boise State 101

Boise State 101

The fifth-ranked Broncos come to town Wednesday for a showdown with the Hurricane. Today, we give you an introduction to the Broncos, a team on the verge of busting the BCS.

YOU SHOULD KNOW...
Poll busters

Boise State is ranked No. 5 in the current aP poll. it?s the second time that the program has been in the top five during this regular season. it is also the Broncos? highest ranking since finishing fifth following the 2007 Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma.

Bronco dominance

Boise State has college football?s highest winning percentage (.850, 113-20) since 1999. Texas (.828, 111-23) ranks second and Oklahoma (.812, 112-26) is third.

Nation?s best

The Broncos rank in the top 10 nationally in six different categories. included are scoring offense, passing efficiency, net punting, punt returns, sacks allowed and pass efficiency defense.

THREE LANDMARK WINS SINCE 1999
Dec. 30, 1999

Boise St. 34, Louisville 31

The Broncos outlasted louisville in a Humanitarian Bowl game that featured 10 lead changes. It was Boise State?s first Division i bowl victory in school history.

Jan. 1, 2007

Boise St. 43, Oklahoma 42

Football fans will never forget this Fiesta Bowl, which had a finish that could have been scripted in Hollywood ? a thriller for most, a nightmare for OU?s faithful.

Sept. 9, 2008

Boise St. 37, Oregon 32

Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore shines in his first road start, throwing for 386 yards and three tDs to lead the Broncos to their first win over a BCS member school on the road.

A LOOK AT BOISE STATE'S SCHEDULE
Boise State has great players and coaches, but does it have a shot at a national championship? a weak conference schedule will really weigh down its chances this year. the latest NCAA statistics show that Boise State has the 93rd toughest schedule. After playing TU, the Broncos will face only one other team (idaho) that currently has a winning record. the team?s next seven opponents after tulsa has a combined nine wins vs. Division i competition and are 16-21 overall.

Will victories equate to moving up in the polls? it may be unlikely. BCS schools have better chances at marquee wins in the next few weeks and may leap the Broncos.

How can Boise State fix things? Obviously, it is by scheduling more tough nonconference competition (like Oregon in the season opener this year). But most BCS schools may pass at playing the most successful non-BCS school in the nation. in that case, Boise is a victim of its own success.

HOW DID THIS GAME COME ABOUT
Tulsa athletic director Bubba Cunningham and Boise State counterpart Gene Bleymaier visited in Phoenix during a summer 2008 meeting and agreed to a homeand- home series. Tulsa will visit Boise?s ?Blue turf? in 2011.

While Boise State is an established non-BCS school, Tulsa is trying to make a step in that direction. Said TU coach todd Graham: ?We think this is a game that our fans would really like for us to play.

Naturally, playing Boise will make it a really challenging schedule, but that?s the type of programs we want to play. We?d like for our program to be along the lines of where they are.?

Kellen Moore

Quarterback

Sophomore is No. 2 nationally in passer-efficiency rating with 13 TD passes and only two interceptions. Named WAC Freshman of the Year after leading the Broncos to a 12-1 record last season. Already rates sixth in Boise career passing yards (4,703) and TD passes (38).

Austin Pettis

Receiver

The 6-foot-3 junior has 21 TD receptions over his first three seasons. Logged a career-best 10 catches in win over UC-Davis and leads Broncos in catches (28), receiving yards (378) and receiving TDs (six). Tallied 567 receiving yards and nine TD catches last year, earning second-team all-WAC accolades.

Kyle Brotzman
Kicker

Connected on a school-record 118 extra points before missing his third attempt of 2009, and is 134-of-135 overall. Junior ranks fourth in Bronco career field goals with 38. Averages 45.7 yards per punt with five downed inside the 20. Would rank eighth nationally if he had enough punts to qualify.

Broncos building tradition with new players

Broncos building tradition with new players

Broncos building tradition with new players

by: MIKE BROWN World Sports Writer
Tuesday, October 13, 2009

A winning college football tradition is sustained by newer players building on what others have established.

Boise State sophomore quarterback Kellen Moore was coming off a record-setting high school career in the state of Washington when the Broncos posted their landmark Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma in January 2007.

Receiver Austin Pettis was also finishing high school. Running back Jeremy Avery was a redshirt freshman for the Broncos. Avery had never played a collegiate down.

Today, Moore is in his second year as the Broncos' starting quarterback, and Avery and Pettis are the leading rusher and receiver, respectively, on another unbeaten Boise State team.

And the Broncos are in arguably the best shape they've ever been as they prepare for Wednesday's nationally televised game against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in Chapman Stadium.

The Broncos are No. 5 nationally, and if they continue winning, they'll have an outside shot of becoming the first non-BCS school to play for the national title in the 12-year BCS history.

Their No. 5 ranking in the Associated Press poll ties the highest ever in the regular season by a non-BCS school. But head coach Chris Petersen says it's way too early to care.

"We don't even kind of pay attention to the rankings. It's not even something we talk about for one second around here, because they don't mean anything right now," Petersen said.

Leave others to speculate. Jerry Palm, editor of CollegeBCS.com, told the Associated Press last week that the Broncos "may have peaked earlier than anyone else in their position has peaked. Or maybe not."

The first weekly BCS standings are due out Sunday. Mock polls at CollegeBCS.com and ESPN.com have the Broncos at No. 5. They'll have to finish first or second to earn an invitation to the Jan. 7 title game in Pasadena.

The standings are based partially on computer rankings, and the Broncos aren't likely to get much help from their remaining Western Athletic Conference brethren. Five of the seven are 100th or higher in the Sagarin Football Rankings, a tool used in the BCS formula.

It's almost a foregone conclusion that the Broncos will run the WAC table, since they've gone 61-4 in conference play since joining the league in 2001.

Meanwhile, two-thirds of the formula is based on human rankings, and the Broncos are hoping for a boost against Tulsa in their only appearance on national television in a six-week span.

Moore is only the latest in a long line of outstanding Boise State quarterbacks, following Bart Hendricks, Ryan Dinwiddie, Jared Zabransky (who made big plays to beat Oklahoma) and Taylor Tharp.

As a redshirt freshman last year, Moore threw for 3,486 yards and 25 touchdowns, leading the Broncos to a 12-1 record.

"We would not have made him a quarterback if we didn't think he would play at a high level, but for a redshirt freshman to play in this system, we've never had that," Petersen said.

This year, Moore has completed 69.7 percent of his passes, thrown for 13 TDs with only two interceptions and ranks No. 2 nationally in pass-efficiency rating.

Tulsa plans to follow Boise State's model

by: JOHN KLEIN Senior Sports Columnist

Go to John Klein's Blog
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tulsa coach Todd Graham has made no secret of his plan to copy Boise State.

Where he wants to take TU is where Boise State has already gone.

The Broncos have become a national power by following a simple blueprint: play important games against important teams and win them.

Tulsa has one of those important games against an important team on Wednesday. It just so happens to be against Boise State.

The Broncos, ranked fifth in the nation and hoping to be more than simply a BCS buster, come to TU for what many consider their last real test of the regular season.

There is already speculation about whether Boise State, saddled with the WAC schedule, can get enough computer points to break through into the national championship game if it goes unbeaten.

Most experts say no.

But the Broncos will be a huge favorite to get back into a BCS bowl if they get past Tulsa on Wednesday night.

"We don't even pay attention to the rankings," Boise State coach Chris Petersen said in a Friday teleconference. "It's not even something we talk about for one second because they don't mean anything. At the end of the season it means something.

"The only thing we're paying attention to is Tulsa. It's a moot point right now."

Petersen said it doesn't matter to him where the Broncos are ranked. He said fifth or 35th doesn't matter right now.

Well, he's wrong about that. If you are not in a BCS league, then where you rank is vitally important.

You have to be ranked in the top 12 at the end of the season to have a shot at a BCS bowl game. It is the difference of playing in a game like the Fiesta Bowl, where Boise solidified its reputation in 2007, or the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala., where TU has played the past two years.

Teams in BCS conferences have a built-in advantage. Their champion gets an automatic bid. The quality of teams in the better BCS leagues, such as the SEC and Big 12, generate better computer numbers and more attention from poll voters.

Most games played by Boise State in the WAC or Tulsa in Conference USA are virtually ignored by the national media.

That's how you get a Wednesday night game. The Broncos and Hurricane desperately need national attention any way they can get it.

When you get that attention, you have to do something with it. Boise State is a prime example of a football program that took great advantage of its moment in the spotlight.

In the 2007 Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma, the Broncos pulled off one of the most stunning upsets in recent history, and in dramatic fashion.

The victory, and the way Boise won, put the Broncos solidly in the national spotlight. They've remained there by winning games against quality BCS teams the past few years, such as sweeping a home-and-home against Oregon.

Still, Boise State is not an unbeatable giant among the non-BCS league teams. In the last two years, Boise State has lost bowl games to East Carolina and TCU.

It all goes back to that victory over Oklahoma. That made the reputation.

"It didn't go away fast and people were continually talking about it for quite a while," Petersen said. "All of that was certainly positive.

"The year after we were trying to move on to the next season and all everyone wanted to talk about was that. That was hard, but it helped this program in a lot of ways."

It is one thing to win a signature game, such as that Fiesta Bowl victory over OU, but it is another thing to maintain that level.

A year ago, East Carolina opened the season with two headline-grabbing victories over No. 17 Virginia Tech and No. 8 West Virginia. Then, the Pirates stumbled during the mid-portion of the schedule.

This year, Houston has already beaten three teams from BCS leagues (at fifth-ranked Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and at Mississippi State) but was smoked by Texas-El Paso.

In other words, non-BCS league teams like Boise State have to win those few moments in the national spotlight but they must also be perfect in their league.

Boise State has done those things. That's why the Broncos are a good measuring stick for the Golden Hurricane.

"Take care of things we can control and play good football," Petersen said. "Then, we'll be playing somewhere good against a good opponent at the end of the season."

That's where Tulsa would love to be.
