SAN FRANCISCO (ESPN.com news services) -- The San Francisco Giants try to sweep their second straight series when they conclude a weekend homestand against the San Diego Padres on Sunday at Pacific Bell Park. But they'll have to do it without Barry Bonds.

Bonds, who is off to a scorching start with five homers in his first five games, will not start the game due to soreness in his knee, but will be available to pinch hit and is expected to play in San Francisco's next game Tuesday.

The Giants have won their first five games and is seekings their first 6-0 start since 1930, when Herbert Hoover was president and Willie Mays was a year away from being born.

On Saturday, rookie Kurt Ainsworth allowed just one run in five innings in his first major league start and David Bell had a pair of run-scoring singles as the Giants posted a 4-1 victory.

Jeff Kent was 0-for-3 but had a walk and reached base on an error and scored a run in his first game of the season. Kent had suffered a fractured left wrist in spring training and missed his team's first four contests.

Livan Hernandez (1-0, 2.25 ERA) gave up two runs and four hits in eight innings in the Giants' 9-2 win at Los Angeles on Opening Day on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old righthander went 2-1 with a 5.25 ERA in four starts against San Diego last season.

Brian Tollberg (0-1, 30.38 ERA) was shellrf by Arizona in his first start Tuesday, a 9-0 defeat. Tollberg gave up nine runs and nine hits and lasted just 2 2/3 innings.

The 29-year-old righty went 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA in his one start against the Giants last season.
