Boston acquires Howry

unable to land the starter they were looking for (Colon Byrd Penney) Boston got a quality arm today in Howry. With Embree Howry & Urbina Sox bullpen has without question improved. Wakefield will move to #4 starter now, where he has won 3 of his 4 starts this season. Wakefield has pitched well this season 3.50 era, and probably this is the best move possible considering the difficulty acquiring a #3 starter.
Even with strike lurking, new owners are opening their pockets acquiring Floyd last night & Howry today.

sorry to butt in on your thread, but I think the Howry pickup is good because he's a better choice than anyone in their system. The only othe guy I'd consider seeing them pickup from trenton is spencer, who might add another LH arm to the pen if Casey stays in the rotation. Howry's not the where he used to be, but he's a viable option. Spencer doesn't wow you with 'stuff' but is a little older and has an idea how to pitch. he's aggressive and keeps shooting for his spots no matter the situation. I think Howry needs to make sure he takes that approach, too, rather than worry whatever velocity and movement he may have lost over the past two years. Howry will be ok and he's a better choice than what they had, in my opinion -- slightly optimistic, too, because I'm a sox fan as well.

wondo- thanks for your insight, obviously you know your pitching. I have heard Howry is just starting to regain his arm Sprint resultant from his surgery. Although unable to throw 94-95 as did in 2000, he has steadily increased from 87 to 90. Additionally I have heard he has developed a nice slider & a quality split finger pitch, as his out pitch. Additionally as you State he is experienced & from what I hear a solid worker who will only develop further. Probably won't save 30 again, but he is a professional pitcher who along with Embree should only help.
