BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox fired manager Jimy Williams on Thursday in the middle of a playoff race.

Boston has lost six of seven games, but still was only two games behind the Oakland Athletics in the AL wild-card standings and five games behind the New York Yankees in the AL East through Wednesday.

The Red Sox were plagued by injuries, including to stars Pedro Martinez and Nomar Garciaparra, and currently has eight players on the disabled list.

Wow, that seems crazy to me, with all the injuries they've had. Jimmy is a good coach, but his reputaton is he don't kiss a** with management.

Jimmy is probably the worst manager in baseball. He only did good in Boston because he had some talent there.

They get more & he still don't know what to do with it.

Hell yeah he had alot of injuries but that is no excuse for his overall performance up there.

Now maybe Boston might do something since alot of those players didn't like him.

Williams' abilities aside, Boston is screwed if Joe Kerrigan leaves with him. Red Sox led the league in ERA last year (which was a miracle given their talent) and Kerrigan is a big reason. I heard Kerrigan and Williams are tight so I would guess he will leave with him. I would look for Boston's staff ERA to go way up if he does.

In addition to being not liked by the players, Jimmy was not liked by management either. That probably played the biggest part in what happened...IMO.
