Kansas City area for who knows how long....
from ticker:

Rookie Josh Hancock (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his third outing and first start for Boston. He tossed one scoreless inning in his major league debut on September 10 at Tampa Bay and did the same vs. Cleveland six days later.

from AP preview:

RED SOX PROBABLE STARTER: Josh Hancock (0-0, 0.00 ERA). The 24-year-old rookie right-hander makes his first major league start after two hitless one-inning relief stints. Hancock's last appearance was Sept. 17 against the Cleveland Indians, whom he retired on five pitches. Hancock was a fourth-round pick in 1998 and helped Auburn reach the College World Series in 1997.

from baseballprospectus (Sept 3):

Josh Hancock has a chance to be an asset in the bullpen and eventually as a fifth starter. He was uncharacteristically wild in Pawtucket after showing his usual fine control in a repeat engagement with Trenton, but he throws in the low 90s and spots a nice curve. If he masters changing speeds, he can be an asset as a starter, but there's no shame in becoming a good reliever on a team that could use a good right-handed reliever.

Hancock makes a fresh start

CHICAGO - Josh Hancock's family wanted to be on hand when the rookie made his first major league start.

The Red Sox' uncertain playoff status left today's assignment up in the air up until late last night, however, and left the right-hander's family back in Tupelo, Miss.

Hancock was told that he would only make this afternoon's start against the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park if the Red Sox were eliminated from postseason contention. That happened last night with a 7-2 defeat. Had the Sox won - and if wild card-leading Anaheim lost, which it did, 4-3, to Texas - manager Grady Little was going to go with veteran righty John Burkett in the final game of the three-game series with the White Sox.

``It's too short notice for them,'' Hancock said prior to last night's game. ``I told them not to worry because (today's) game is going to be on (Chicago superstation) WGN, so there's no need to be here.''

Hancock's father, Dean, watched last night's game on television and vowed to make one final effort to be on hand today if his oldest son got the nod.

``It would be tough,'' Hancock said. ``I told (them) that hopefully there will be plenty more (starts) next year.''

From Baseball America:

Hancock was 3-4 with a 3.61 ERA in 84.2 innings at Double-A Trenton (82 hits, including nine homers, and a 69-18 K/BB ratio). Hancock's control slipped quite a bit at Triple-A, he was 4-2 with a 3.45 ERA (44.1 innings, 39 hits, including two homers, and a 29-26 K/BB ratio), so it doesn't look like he's ready for prime time.

Hancock has a low-90s fastball, a decent curve, and a vestigial changeup. Basically, he has a chance to become a competent pitcher in time, but there's nothing really there to get you revved up.
