The Bruins could get a sizeable boost tonight, with captain Joe Thornton hoping to return to action after missing three games with back spasms. After nearly a week of massages, treatment and rest for his back, Thornton skated with the team yesterday and said he felt fine. He said unless he wakes up hurting this morning, he should be OK to play against the Sabres.

No. 2 center Alex Zhamnov has not skated in 2 weeks and remains sidelined with what coach Mike Sullivan said is a shoulder injury suffered in the preseason finale against the Rangers. Defenseman Jiri Slegr (back) did not take the ice yesterday, and neither did winger Shawn McEachern, who incurred a back problem in Montreal.
