Lost Hillbilly,

Thats the first time I have heard someone call Va Tech by VPI in over 10 years. How soon we forget that they use to be listed as VPI.

Played my forst play of the bowl season this morning, Oreg State, a vet team with a SR QB going against a team without a head coach. Then again if ND would name a coach it wouldn't take much of a genius to outcoach Riley.

Georgia -7 big Alvarez is 7-2 in bowl games but those 2 losses were versus Auburn and Georgia. Alvarez has played well against the Pac Ten where they have gotten most of those victories. Wisconsin was aided by a week schedule. Georgia's defense will stifle the Badgers. Major QB issues as Stocco has only played well versus the lesser defenses.

LSU -7 The Hawkeyes are to one dimensional as they don't have a reliable running game. That may have worked against the Big Ten but it won't work here.

Texas Tech +12 California will be in a letdown after not going to a major bowl. Also think this will be a much lower scoring game than the experts think.

Purdue -7 Arizona State's defense began to fade in the later half of the season. All of Purdues losses were close and I still feel this is the best team in the big ten this season.

Oregon State -3.5 Notre Dames weakness is the strength of the Beavers. Everyone talks about Notre Dames tough schedule the Beavers had a tougher one.

Hawaii -3 Too tough at home.

Oklahoma +3 The only team that really had a balanced attack to face USC was California and they gave them all they could handle and then some. Big twelve a tougher conference from 1-12.
Sorry Scott from USC.

Pittsburgh +16 Too many distractions from Meyer leaving the program another assistant going to UNLV. Everyone saying Pitt doesn't belong will be a great motivator for the Panthers.

Over/unders

Over/unders

Sorry to clog this thread but on another site someone put out there were 28 games and that 17 went under and only 11 went over with one being a push.

Favorites were 14-13 with 1 push.

greed,

great analysis....especially liked your analysis about wisc.& iowa.

i have seen a few cappers at other forums express the same belief as yourself that calif. will be in a let down mode for their game vs. texas tech. but how do you know that ?

why can't they be motivated to show the voters that they deserved to be in the rose bowl instead of texas ?

i still think that they are the best all around team in college football.don't know if i will take them because of the injuries at receiver, but i wouldn't be so quick to say that they will be flat.

good luck.

While in prinicpal I am glad Petrino is staying as I hating the coaching carousel and the total lack of commitment or honoring of contracts, I think in the end he will regret it, or leave soon. The Big Least wont even be a BCS league soon, and he is going to have a heckuva time getting qulity out of conference games. The Big conferences are alredy unhappy about Utah taking all those milions from the coffers - it likely wont happen again.

GUYS
CINCY (-2)..... Marshall proved they are not that good and the line is based on the Louisville beating Cincy took. ONE PROBLEM Gino was out that game. According to what I have seen he will be back for this game. The guy started 43 consecutive games before the Louisville game! The offense is set up for him, if he is back.......they should ROLL!

Irish,

I like Cincy in the game too but if Gino is not playing they will have a hard time scoring on Marshall. I watched them play Louisville and granted that Louisville is a top 5 team in my book, but Cinc offense was brutal and the passing attack was non existent. Marshall will score some points in this game with a seasoned offense so if Gino is out then this game could get ugly.

Today's top story ... The Notre Dame coaching situation
Irish officials are expected to meet with current Buffalo Bills’ O-coordinator Tom Clements regarding the head coaching vacancy in South Bend; Clements was an All-American QB when the Irish won the 1973 national championship; He was also an assistant coach on Lou Holtz staff during Holtz’s stint with Notre Dame … … Also in the mix is New England Patriots’ O-coordinator Charlie Weis; ND could interview Weis as early as today

Big XII

Oklahoma
Senior DT Dusty Dvoracek, who was kicked off the team in mid-September due to violent behavior, has been denied a medical hardship season by the Big XII review committee; Dvoracek may still petition the NCAA, so there is still a chance he will be able to play one more year of college

Big East

Pittsburgh
Head coach Walt Harris was expected to meet with Panthers’ AD Jeff Long to discuss future plans; Harris has two years remaining on his contract at Pitt, but is slated to have an on-campus interview at Stanford this weekend

Big Ten

Illinois
Newly appointed head coach Ron Zook will take two members of his staff with him to Illinois; O-coordinator Larry Fedora and secondary coach Dan Disch will remain a part of Zook’s staff …

MAC

Toledo
Standout sophomore RB Scooter McDougle, who carried the Rockets to the MAC title, will miss the Dec. 27 bowl game versus UConn; McDougle was listed as doubtful earlier this week, but head coach Tom Amstutz officially announced the McDougle will sit out the game in an effort to make sure he gets as healthy as possible for next season; In McDougle’s absence, Amstutz plans to use a trio of RBs to handle the workload

Mountain West

BYU
After losing out on Utah D-coordinator and BYU alum Kyle Whittingham, the Cougars may turn its search in-house; Long-time assistant head coach Lance Reynolds, who was named interim head coach following the resignation of Gary Crowton, may be given some serious consideration for the head coaching vacancy

Pac-10

Arizona State
Highly touted dual-threat QB recruit Jason Forcier, who verbally committed to the Sun Devils following a campus visit in late October, has changed his mind and is apparently headed to Michigan; Forcier cited ASU’s interest in former BYU recruit Ben Olson as one reason to pursue a different school

Southern California
A paid of Trojan coaches are pursuing head coaching possibilities at other schools; O-Coordinator Norm Chow interviewed with Stanford on Wednesday, and D-coordinator Ed Orgeron is scheduled to interview with Ole Miss today

Washington
Some recent news stories coming out of Seattle, as the Huskies continue its search for a new head coach; Among those expressing interest are Atlanta Falcons’ head coach Jim Mora, Jr., Minnesota Vikings’ head coach Mike Tice, current Boston College front man Tom O’Brien, and former Notre Dame coach Tyrone Willingham

SEC

Florida
Sophomore LB Taurean Charles, who has been suspended from the team since his role in a fraternity altercation last July, has been charged with aggravated battery; Sophomore TB Skyler Thornton faces only a misdemeanor battery charge and is expected to receive a sentence of 75 hours of community service and completion of an anger management program, in addition to staying away from alcohol for nine months

Ole Miss
The Rebs have reportedly interviewed current Miami (Fla.) D-Coordinator Randy Shannon on Wednesday; Neither party would confirm the interview, but a booster indicated that his jet was used by the university for a trip to Florida; Ole Miss expects to have a coach in place by tomorrow

South Carolina
University president Andrew Sorensen is investigating an incident involving the theft of $18,000 worth of video equipment and framed photos from Williams-Brice Stadium by certain members of the football team; Certain players were apparently angered by the fact that USC turned down its bowl berth; All the items were returned and no criminal charges will be pressed; Internal discipline, however, is expected to be handed down to the guilty parties

Sun Belt

Utah State
The Aggies will reportedly name Arizona State D-coordinator Brent Guy to fill its coaching vacancy; Guy was the LB’s coach at Utah State from 1992-94 and has been a member of Dirk Koetter’s staff (at both Boise State and Arizona State) since 1998; It is not yet known when Utah State will make the hiring official

WAC

SMU
Head coach Phil Bennett was awarded a two-year contract extension, which is in addition to the two years he has remaining on his current deal; Bennett is now under contract through the 2008 season

Toledo be careful, now that Scooter has been scratched from the bowl game this is a huge below to Toledo's offense. McDougle was horse for the Rockets especially late in the season and while Toledo does have some depth at the RB position the dropoff is quite big. Peronally, I feel the loss of Scooter is comparable to losing four points!

Can anyone tell me how in the world Phil Bennett got an extension as SMU? This guy has won like six games in four years and even lost every game a few years ago. Has SMU completely given up on it's football program to settle for losing?

Needs updated for last year but some historical trends in bowl games

GMAC BOWL: The underdog owns a 3-1 SU & ATS record in this bowl game previously known as the Mobile Alabama Bowl.

* TANGERINE BOWL: Both installments of the reincarnated Tangerine Bowl have gone OVER the total, and both have been blowouts.

* FORT WORTH BOWL : – The inaugural Fort Worth Bowl will be played this year. Ironically, the host University is one of the game participants. Boise State is 3-0 SU & ATS in bowl games the last three seasons.

* LAS VEGAS BOWL: : UCLA became the first favored team to win SU & ATS in the Las Vegas Bowl last year. Overall now, in the last five lined Las Vegas Bowl games, the underdog has gone 4-1-1 ATS.

* HAWAII BOWL: : After a one year hiatus, the Christmas Day bowl game in Hawaii returned. The underdog has now covered four in a row and Tulane became the third largest underdog (14-1/2 points) in the past decade to win a bowl game.

* MOTOR CITY BOWL: : Toledo and Marshall were the only teams to represent the MAC over the past five years. Including the 2002 loss, the MAC is 4-1 SU & ATS in this game.

* INSIGHT BOWL: : The most significant trends that have formed from the Insight Bowl are that it is usually a blowout (average winning margin: 19.7 ppg), and that is usually high scoring (5-2-1 OVER in the last 8)

* CONTINENTAL TIRE BOWL: : Last year’s game was the inaugural Continental Tire Bowl, and the first bowl game ever played at Ericsson Stadium in Charlotte. Virginia won that game as an underdog.

* ALAMO BOWL: : The Big Ten team is 7-1 SU & ATS in the last seven games of the Alamo Bowl since the format changed, matching representatives of the Big 12 and Big Ten.

* HOUSTON BOWL: : Last year’s game was the first of this bowl series played at Reliant Stadium, as it replaced the game formerly known as the GalleryFurniture.com bowl. OVERS are 2-1, the favorite/underdogs are split 1-1 with last year’s game resulting in a PUSH.

* HOLIDAY BOWL: : Including last year’s easy Arizona St spread win, the last four double digit underdogs in the Holiday Bowl have covered. Also, the Pac 10 team has won ATS in the last five Holiday Bowl games, all as an underdog.

* SILICON VALLEY CLASSIC: : Fresno St has been in four straight Silicon Valley Classic games. The favored teams are 0-4 SU & ATS, and all four games went OVER the total.

* MUSIC CITY BOWL: : The team representing the SEC has lost SU & ATS in all five previous Music City Bowls. The underdog has covered the last four.

* SUN BOWL: : The Sun Bowl could legitimately be renamed the underdog bowl, as the dog has covered the last EIGHT games!

* LIBERTY BOWL: : The Liberty Bowl has been one of the lowest scoring bowl games over the past decade. Consistently burdened by total in the 60’s and miserable weather, this game has gone UNDER in 10 of the last 11!

* INDEPENDENCE BOWL: : The SEC representative in the last eight Independence Bowl games is 7-1 SU & 6-2 ATS. The underdog has covered the last five games.

* SAN FRANCISCO BOWL: San Francisco’s Pac Bell Park hosted its first bowl game ever last season, an UNDER an underdog cover. Boston College is 5-1 SU & ATS in its last six bowl games.

* OUTBACK BOWL: : The UNDER and the SEC are each 5-2 ATS in the last seven Outback Bowl games.

* GATOR BOWL: : Not counting the 2002 New Year’s Day Gator Bowl in which Florida State beat Virginia Tech 45-17 in a pick em’ game, the favorite is on a 6-0 SU & ATS run in the last six Gator Bowl games.

* CAPITAL ONE BOWL: : In this bowl game, formerly known as the Florida Citrus Bowl, the underdog has covered four of the last five. The OVER is also 5-2 in the last seven.

* ROSE BOWL: Michigan vs USC (-6.5, o/u 57) - : The favorite in “the Grandaddy of them all” has won two in a row SU & ATS after losing the previous five ATS.

* ORANGE BOWL: The Orange Bowl has been one of the most lopsided bowl games over the past several years with just one of the last seven games being decided by a single digit margin. Favorites are on a 5-1 SU & ATS stretch in the Orange Bowl.

* COTTON BOWL: : The UNDER has been the most consistent winning wager in this bowl game, converting in six of the last eight games.

* PEACH BOWL: : The representative of the SEC in the Peach Bowl has compiled a 4-2 SU & ATS record over the last six years, but the two losses have come in the most recent games.

* FIESTA BOWL: Amazingly, the team with the better straight up record has won seven Fiesta Bowl games in a row, both SU & ATS.

* HUMANITARIAN BOWL: : The favorite has covered three straight games in this bowl series and the OVER is 4-2 in the history of the Humanitarian Bowl.

* SUGAR BOWL: : The favorite has dominated the recent action in this game, winning the last seven straight up and going 6-1 ATS in that span.
